In live situations especially in loud songs (like this where he beats the crap out of his drums) its nearly impossible for a drummer to hear anything over their instrument. To fix it most drummer where a pair of headphones of some sort to mute sound and hear themselves and others through mikes on the stage.

A lot of drummers wear these live, but most are much smaller in ear headphones.

now i'm not knockin' the big-kit guys but i personally prefer small kits. it just depends on your style of drumming and your influences. and as far as the quality of kit goes you can make an ok kit sound pretty damn good if you put some good heads on it and tune them right. it also helps if you have a good snare and cymbals. my snare(s), cymbals, and bass pedal prolly cost twice what the rest of the kit does. now i just have to re-learn how to play them, haha. been messin with guitar too much.

he never really uses a larger kit b/c at a normal show he goes so crazy that he usually ends up breaking something beyond repair so he just rolls with inexpensive small kits. amazing live band tho.
