No, the 'black stuff' is licorice and it wasn't hard to bend it at all. You can always soften the licorice a little by putting in the microwave.

The silver cachous (cashews are nuts) are little round sugar candy balls used for cake decoration. They come in a variety of colours. We used silver ones for the Mermaid's tail and bodice.
