  • Fleming

  • great opera voice.. and legendary singer..

  • She is the reason i fell in love with opera and all that magic. She's my eternal role model...

  • Maria Callas is the one and only! Absolute Diva!

  • Wzrusza mnie Twoj glos,pieknie

  • Callas reigns supreme! look at those eyes! Completely absorbed in the character and the music. BRAVA DIVA!

Schade. Ich liebe Maria Callas.

  • "Hers it simply the most expressive treatment of the music: she is rapt but not sleepy, dignified by not statuesque. She sings with what can best be called love; that is, with care, understanding and sudden personal insight...and has been essentially the great exponent and advocate of the tradition, in spite of the imperfections which seem to defy it"-J.B.Steane

  • I can't say hearing anything wrong here, okay....'59 she was still in great shape. A voice like her is a Gift in itself. She has a demonic middle register....it is, and then the chest voice....amazing. But what if a singer takes a risk, or not. It is always in service of the composer. And Callas did, always!

  • it is so difficult to listen to other sopranos when you know Maria's version. They all more or less sing it in her tradition and of course do not compare. Even the great Caballe who sings it wonderfully does not equal Callas. The only one for me who is wonderful is Rene Fleming and simply because she is Renee and sings it her own unique fabulous way as her voice is so very different from Callas. Scotto, Callas's version in Amsterdam is much better though than this one

  • nothing compare

  • Who says that there is even a hint of unpleasantness in this beautiful voice. Maria has an extremely pleasant voice, which she molds according to her role. On a few occasions she changes her voice to almost a male voice, which can be avoided if necessary. This change in voice should be called unpleasant.

  • the most beautiful voice in the world my heart breaks when i hear her

  • meno male che ESISTONO GLI ANGELI . MARIA INCOMPARABILE

  • This is magnificent singing. First of all, she's only singing in a concert not a full production of Pirata and yet she is giving 100 percent of herself as if she was doing the entire opera. She is in character, she transforms herself into someone else, just look at how the music and the words possess her, especially from "suono fatale" to the end. Callas truly did live - and die - for opera, her passion in life

  • i adore maria. but i think must admit that her singing was really loaded and forced and unbalanced breathing ..it could give really wonderful dramatic feeling. but really could crack one's voice... in fact, the opera singers before ww2 was more entertainer, craftmen than isolatrd, self redeemed artists, and they were theatre cat...sang operas every week, so they could achive astonishing grasp for theatrical drama. but many soranos' career were really short. Callas must be the last one who

  • Unforgetable Maria!!

  • Maria Callas Gave the perfection to Beillini's this amazing opera

  • The irony is that we will never see her like again: today's opera business--based on rigorous schedules, machine-like efficiency, and adherence to the dictums of enfant-terrible directors with no understanding of the opera medium--would instantly crush out any such spirit and conviction.

  • True - shes not in best form - but I adore her cello-like timbre

true-some notes are sharp- waht ever happend with her voice - shes a great actress-in a CONCERT VERSION! - and she had sung 10 years in best shape - BUT WHAT GLORIOUS TEN YEARS! BRAVA

  • @OLIVCHEN77 No one like her.

  • SUPREMA Y UNICA, A LA VES; LA GRAN MAESTRA DEL BEL CANTO. QUE CLA-

SE Y ESTILO INCOMPARABLES. CUANTO NOS DEJO Y CUAN ISUSTITUIBLE,

SE HACE HOY, SU ARTE INCOMPARABLE. REALMENTE MAGNIFICA.

  • She was sick at head.

  • Adorabile

  • my.favourite.opera.she.was.perfect.i.cry.every.time.i.hear.her.the.voice.of.god

  • Greatest ever, she is Queen , Diva and Goddess ♥♥♥!!!

  • Montserrat Caballe is so much better, singing this.

  • @montsyblackmadonna That depends upon which terms you use to define who's a good and a bad artist. I think it would be easy to find at least half a dozen other arias where Callas surpasses Caballé by pronouncing ALL the consonants, singing the coloratura more accurately etc. Besides, Caballé revered Callas and asked her advise on roles such as Lady Macbeth and Abigaille (which Callas advised her not to sing), so I don't think you idol would agree with you.

  • She's looking around everywhere like "where the hell did my voice go?" Understandable question. She's only 36 here but sounds labored, old and tired, dodging high notes, out of breath and, well, just out.

  • @iriisblue

She was sick that day. She took a chance but it didn´t work. But precious none the less ;)

  • "let's just enjoy the glory days"

these were the end of the glory days..but they were very glorious nonetheless. forever callas. this is the definition of "impeccable" in my opinion.

  • excellent but belcanto singing shouldnt be forceful or it can destroy the voice of soprano (Callas, Aliberti, Bonfadelli and many many...). The present requires only forceful singing (big stage, loud orchestra). So we have next to nothing in bel canto sopranos and a lot bel canto tenors and baritones

  • that just sent me into a rage. the excitement and realism that is displayed is almost too good the eyes of today to watch. she does it all so easily while on stage. no breathe problems or anything, just perfection perfection perfection, como siempre.

  • The Divine one--omg she IS opera!!

  • Do it La Divina!!

  • No comments. Just listening.

  • i am really NOT a fan of Maria Callas but i have to say that i feel in love with this great performance =)

  • The G.O.A.T!

  • Her voice was shot to pieces by the end. Let's just enjoy the glory days!!

  • We're lucky... hmmm. Thank you Maria!

  • What? No one notices the equisite direction of Maestro Rescigno? It was he who introduced Callas to America. His incredible control of the orchestra makes this music beyond compare. Bravo, Rescigno and brava Callas!

  • No soprano today can remotely sing like Callas. For a while, I thought Angela Gheorghiu was being a Callas copycat. But she clearly is not Callas. Her voice was unique, instantly recognizable and unrivaled. I wish though that bel canto was as "in" now as it was when Callas was "reviving" the genre. What she worked hard to maintain is now gone ?? Bel canto is more than just Lucia Di Lammermoor. We need a good Norma nowadays too. If only Callas had lived into the 80's and 90's

  • I'm in tears; thank you for posting. Brava Callas

  • take notice of 4:26... and on... so many established actors" actresses should learn from her! and Yet the soman SINGS LIKE A DIVINE MONSTER! perfect artistics, understanding of the music through vocal evolution. Wow...

  • Just SUBLIME

  • Wonderfull. its posible a best interpretation of the Il Pirata, most dramatic? rossiniis well be happy with this

  • Fu-neeeeeeeeee---staaa...I love those chest-notes. No half measures from La Divina. Ti adoro!

  • Maria, Maria, almost an unreal dream, so close to the unknown peace!

  • Maria Callas is the most important column that supports the world of the opera. She created a work of profound lyrical and dramatic beauty. She is an artist of truly noteworthy ability, she has a powerful, steady voice with an appealing timbre which can be penetrating and carry well in loud passages but also acquire appropriate sweetness in delicate moments.

Maria Callas Prima Donna Assoluta, she is the opera singer in the world.

  • That voice is frightening, it has so much power!! Seeing Callas at a live performance

    must have been earth shattering.

No wonder the BBC, named her " The Greatest Soprano Of All Time " .

  • Callas was that rare opera singer who connects on an emotional level with an audience.

  • This is amazing, lovely, beautiful! Talk about Maria Callas it's like to talk about artists like Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Gerrit Dou, Lautrec etc. I'm still waiting for Callas reencarnation, It's going to be difficult to find someone performing like her. Callas was the Concorde of the stage. Assoluta! Bravissima! A Giant on stage!

  • Marvelous interpretation

  • A force of nature, nothing compares to her...

  • Her control and technique is total, vocal and musicality spreaking. Final!

  • Brava!

  • Wow... pricelesss

  • Remember this is a concert, to see her in live opera is a

memory never forgotten. Yes sometimes she was not at her best, but always desperately exciting she was made for Verdi

Donizetti,Bellini, and she did so much for opera lovers.

Sleep well Maria and sing for me Ebben Lantano.

  • What can one say but wow!!! Such an amazing performance. Love her movements at the end of the video.

  • E dopo questo ... il nulla !!!!

  • I wish I looked and sang half as good as her with a cold?

  • Callas is music!

  • The best!

  • No further dynamics, No depth, No variety of tones, Poor diction!

Not an outstanding performance and totally bad voice production. She sounds like a random Egyptian singer because of the way she acts and looks.

  • It's your time to go to a shrink, sorry.

  • envious loser. another one.

  • I do love Callas but it always amuses me when people talk about her acting - to me it was always the usual 'general pained expression' - the voice, though, is always so moving.

  • I know what you mean, but the acting is coming through in the voice, so the pained expression must serve some theatrical purpose - if only internally.

  • There are good sopranos, excellent sopranos and Maria Callas the Mezzo.

  • Callas is the only diva.

  • There are good sopranos, excellent sopranos and Maria Callas.

  • Fireworks.Thank you for your Bellini,Callas.Asbestos/leaded lows,sparkling highs.

  • I love xpression when she performs songs

  • Oh, good god!

    What artistry!

    What stage presence!

    What a dress!

    What ...

I am struck dumb by you, Maria.

  • XD, what a dress...ahahah, BRAVA MARIA!!!!!!!

  • People also forget that she had a TERRIBLE cold during this particular concert tour, but was so afraid of press censure she went ahead with the concerts anyway, despite her better judgement. She'd been brutalized too many times in the recent past for supposedly being fickle and temperamental. AND this is the last number in an enormously taxing program. They broke the mold after she was created, no doubt about it.

  • Ciao, BellovVideo, I also was aware of her cold during these days. However, I am glad that she went ahead. These images are a treasure for those who love Maria and the voice, not being her best, is nevertheless unique as she was

  • she has a lot of drama on this one.......

  • At this time in her career she was absolutely splendid, indescribably so. Simply SUPERB!!!!

  • I am always watching this splendid video, like someone who is trying to decipher a mystery. She is everything at the same time: strong, fragile, her voice is strange and fascinating, she is very feminine and so on. When she died Time magazine said she was "overwhelmingly talented". I cannot find more precise words.

  • I listen to this voice and shiver every time. Callas has the most expressive and dramatic coloratura voice of them all, I love Sutherland to bits but Callas is something quite unique.

  • Callas was and sje is the first and unique. After her the chaos

  • Bellini, Il Pirata, norma, et al, Callas colloratura , dramtico, Sutherland has the ease, Callas has the drama!!

  • I think she was in a very unique dress. Her legs were visible from outside. She must have been particular about how she would look to the audience. Brava, La Callas. She IS the queen of art!

  • WSPANIALE!!CUDOWNY GŁOS!!

  • The strings in this piece remind me so much of "Casta Diva" one of my personal favourites. Also the ending at 3:43 sounds JUST like "Casta Diva's" ending notes....its soo relaxing!

    I love Callas!

  • Oh my God!!! Look those hands!!! My God!

  • I love her.

And there are other artists I appreciate as well but Callas is on a different level.

  • Sweet!

  • The first part follows the score extremely closely, apart from a few bars cut because there is no chorus, and her interpretation is based apparently on a close reading of the composer's indications. in the second half, the cuts are much more extensive, and the vocal line is largely rewritten to eliminate high notes. Several high Cs in the fioratura are cut, as well as a sustained high C as the penultimate note of the vocal line. Carefully planned? Last minute? Improvised?

  • Your assessment is accurate, and I think these changes are largely improvised or last minute. You can clearly see her struggling -- the moment at 7:20 is telling. It's a pity that her Carnegie Hall performance in the same year, in which the penultimate note is a ringing high C, wasn't videotaped. Still, it's amazing how good a performance she manages regardless, and how she pushes herself into such punishing repertoire. Lady Macbeth -- then Imogene!

  • How is possible on earth to judge this Godess of opera is carefully planned your questions? Are you so jealous?

  • Why else would someone comment? Everybody always says, "Brava!" or some other great praise, which is fine and of course deserved but not insightful. Perhaps you should give ground for disagreement rather than denouncing someone immediately.

  • Of caurse I give this ground floor when I only answer on this comment

  • This haunting piece of Bellini,is only surpassed by the Callas interperetation and outstanding performance,in what personally was a difficult year for her.Brava!

  • I've already posted a set of eight videos about Maria Callas (search by "Maria Callas - Testimonials and Interviews"). Those videos were presented at a Brazilian TV channel at 1997, in a tribute to the 20 years "without" Maria. Nice videos, testimonials and even Callas interviews. Unfortunately, at 2007 (30 years of her death) I didn't see anything tributing to her...

  • She was so amaing in beauty, character, and in artistry....simply the best Operatic singer next to Pavarotti that ever lived..dont understand how some would dare say she was a good actress and not a good singer...she was everything! and MORE!

  • wonderful voice

  • This is perhaps the best Callas video even if she avoids the high note she sang in the commercial recording. When Callas is well, nobody sings like her, with such magnificent phrasing and dramatic power.

  • I have no words! Hope you are able to continue singing with the heavenly choirs!Callas forever!

Geniale!!

  • GENIUS ! , *uncurl my toes*

  • she takes my breath away whenever i hear her, even when she was not at her best, there were moments of pure genius in her singing. she had a musical soul and there is no higher praise than that. she was the greatest, we will never see anything like her again, ever.

  • she was no greatest at all!

  • actually she was the greatest!! she still is!

  • no she isn´t there is no the greatest, there are many greates.

  • indeed.

    fantastic.

  • If you can find someone that can match her or double her in mastery, artistry, and beauty I dare you to find such a person..

  • I agree , freezzertime, no such artist exists.....

  • Even when she was not at her best, she was still far better than many (if not all) of the singers of today !

  • Wonderful. I would love to hear this opera in full.

  • I love her! I tremble whenever I hear her, i light up whenever I see her! No one else can make me feel that way!

  • la mejor, por siempr callas.

    the best, forever callas.

  • Mesmerizing!!A+

  • astounding!!!--The aesthetic phenomenon of the past century-and most likely the next---

  • This is Mastery....... OMG WAW WAW WAW WAW WAW WAW. Heart felt.

  • God! of what was she made??? GOd! she is the only one who gets sooooo inside! She's the tragedy & the drama itself also she is the voice.. the glamour... the beauty ...

  • especially this pirata scene is a masterpiece of high art yes... and imagine that it was her last year (1959) with a decent voice and definetely not in her vocal prime

  • I totally agree with you. :)

  • Her visualization of the entire situation through the long introduction (not shown here) is a lesson all actors should be made to watch. Its extraordinary. By the way -- the wry eye connection she makes with the conductor after the slighty missed note in the Lady Macbeth is priceless: as though she were saying: "Hold on, its gonna be a bumpy night. . . !" This is sublime singing - missing ultimate C or not.

  • above all is it a proof of how enormously critical she was on herself She never forgave herself for not being able to sing a note well

(btw the wiry eye comes after the not-sung high C at the end of Tu che invoco and not at the fastly-sung/only-touched-for-a-sec high C in lady Macbeth's aria)

  • Callas is the only Callas... ^_^

  • true that

  • Nobody has ever come close to this woman's mastery.

  • anyone knows what was the colour of that dress??? i've seen the pictures of her dresses expositions but i've never seen that one. callas the best!

  • BEYOND INCREDIBLE!!

  • all indebted to Onegin65. The Hamburg concert is

    a rare treasure.

  • LA DIVINA! She's so BEAUTIFUL! I love Pirata!!! And She sings it... there's no wordst that can describe La Callas. Brava la Divina!!!

  • OK I dont know what she is singing about, but Dam i love this woman Brava Diva..... this is how it should be done, if your gona sing sing with the whole heart.

  • most beautifull women and one of her best songs.... like her so much!

  • the Definition of high Art

  • did anyone realize that the string part is pretty much the same as casta diva? like you think that's the song that she's gonna start singing.

  • You are most right. This is a very common Bellini sort of "motiv"...it also resembles Ma la sola ohime son Io from Beatrice...

  • I agree with you.

  • This scene is one of the bast pieces of music ever written. Because of Callas we can hear it often nowadays. It is a pity the introduction and the recitative are not uploaded. She was sick at this concert. Yet she sings sublimely. Incredible actress, you can read in her face exactly what Imogene is going through . Amazing . Even though she does not sing the final C she is great!!!!!

    La divina !!!

  • Incredible Singing ... The voice of "La Callas" made one of the biggest gifts to the Opera; she replaced the force of the Drama. The "Sarah Bernard " of the Opera. Thanks for that greatfull Pirata-Video.

  • HEAVENNNN

  • isn't this the final scene where Imogene goes mad? if so,,, i don't know,,, as AMAZING Callas is, her voice is so big, strong and electrifying that it doesn't somewhat fit the fragile state that Imogene is in throughout the whole Opera. She is much better off playing the Diva. I don't know,, just doesn't seem convincing that she is so hurt, fragile and about to go mad. More like, she is saying "i am goign to rule over all of you"

much prefer Aliberti version of this

  • You are right about this concert but Callas was able to portray the right state with Madame Butterfly, don't you agree?

  • Simply the best. The sopranoes from the 50's and 60's are light years ahead of todays products. Will this quality evere appear again ? Callas and Gena were unique by todays standards - Kiri apart.

  • You should check out Eglise Gutierrez if you don't know her yet. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

  • On teh studio recording she finishes witn a High C with the sound of death

  • She was suffering from a cold during this performance. She opted for a lower alternative or else she would crack the C.

  • inmejorable

  • just one movement of her arm can express so much of the drama of this music. She really studied the music and the phrasing because to execute so much physical movement in such a precise and expressive way is an exceptional and unique talent.

  • Great Singer!!!

    Unique!!!

    Brava!

  • It's so thrilling just to watch Callas and the way she feels the role. And then there is the singing: the exquisite vocal color and line, the care taken with the words, the emotional intensity, and the technique (even scales, pure legato, imposing low register, etc.). She lacks the wonderful piano scales of Caballe and seems to weaken toward the close, but is nonetheless incomparable.

  • Of course, since CALLAS' voice is huge and Caballe's is smaller! Caballe had problems in the fortisimo notes! and there is no reasons to compare them since caballe has admited being infirior to callas

  • "No reason to compare them since Caballe has admitted being inferior to Callas", but I did'nt admit that fact, so I can still compare if I want...no ?

  • i don't care what you want or have admited! do as you wish, who cares.

  • Glad to see we have the same argument.

  • this is the difference with other sopranos...Callas gave THIS to this planet...Appreciate and be humble and grateful

Genius is not someone with technical perfection(that is called a good professional or a brilliant "student")

Genius is someone with this kind of performance

  • The chromtic scales ALONE could make her a legend -- it's just so FUCKING beautiful.

  • uyy y aun algunos osan comparar a caballe con CALLAS EN ESTE ROL!!!!!...CALLAS ES UNICA EL RESTO AFICIONADAS..ESTO LO DIJO LA MISMA CABALLE!!!

  • Video with good audio, finally! Here you can listen the noble metal of her resonance.Long Bellini's melody sung with LEGATO of classical beauty.

  • Callas Magic for sure. And i rather refer her as to a Goddess for she is fem/female.

  • A lot of feeling but she ducked the top note and carried too much weight in the upward scales. Pity because her dramatic approach is good.

  • She usually sings the high C at full force, but that day, she was suffering from a cold (cracked the high C from Nel di la vittoria earlier in the recital). Thus, she opted for a lower alternative.

  • Forgot to say that the cold definitely affected her ability to vocalise (still excellent though, IMO).

  • yes indeed, she is like a God to us ,so please be so kind and write only good words about her, maybe she is listening .

  • Callas at her best.

  • She just doesn't seem to fit this part too well,,, i don't know,, I learned of this opera through Lucia Aliberti that has just as sensitive beautiful and subtle voice as Callas, yet Lucia's voice fit this role soooo much better, especially at this point in the opera. Callas' loud over-confident and strong as ox voice doesn't seem to suit this role too well, but i still love her,,, she sounds like a god or something,,,

  • Oh My God! What expressivity.

  • What i wonderful performes of Callas beautiful Viva la callas
