Hey, for frets, I've seen people reuse stainless-steel cores of thrown-away windshield-wiper blades -- they're nicely uniform, practically wear-forever indestructable, right-size thin, easy to install & eyeball correct, they look great. Cut slots with small hacksaw blade. CHEERS!

I picked up a zine at the DIY bookfair and it had plans for all sorts of instruments to make. Apparently you can buy fretwire and just tap it into the wood kinda like a huge staple. Atleast according to this guy. Try it out.
