  • Great review/ walkthrough! I'm glad the US got dokki dokki panic. There was no way I was gonna be able to do this when I was a little kid, hell I can't even beat it now. .

  • @ramz7887 Yay! You've proved them right!

  • This game is so much easier with Luigi

  • 6:18

Actually, you can kill yourself by letting time run out. It just takes awhile.

  • The only version I have of this game is on Super Mario All-Stars. I would LOVE to get this version instead.

  • @uofm97 you can get it on wii if you have one

  • @BlueDeity Yes, I have a Wii but I'd rather try to get one made on a old NES cartridge. Apparently, there's a guy in Canada who will put this game on a NES cartridge if you send one to him. I learned about the guy on here but don't remember the name of the site.

  • Did you really just go THROUGH the pipe at 0:16? Whoa.

  • Comment removed

  • @galcala731 What's your problem man? You either are attempting to be a tr0ll start a flame war, or you are just seriously pissed for no reason or some reason.

    Good day sir!

  • Beating a difficult game 8 times in a row...

orrrr i could live my life, get a job, and buy cool stuff...

    yea... i'll go with that

  • Wow, I gotta tell ya, I'm more interested in the trippy hidden bonus levels of this game than the actual game itself. Those levels look pretty damn insane. But yeah, man great review of this ridiculously frustrating game. I simply have to agree, most Americans would NOT have enjoyed this fragfest. I don't even see how people in Japan could have enjoyed this game.

  • 0:55 - i c wut u did thur. >_>

  • i like the way you say "portion"

  • Beat it 8 times in a row, No fricken way.

  • @ 0:15.. Gotta love going through things! :)

  • There we go! An american teen who accomplished the challenge of beating super mario bros 2! That show \s nintendo thats its not too hard for north americans!

  • @wescoolya hes not a teen hes like 20-30 years old lol

  • @ClockGusher well he dosn't sound like he is!

  • @wescoolya he used save sates

  • @ChaoticDarkShadow wow, i knew it!

  • 6:20 on that wapr to world 5 you can just wait the time to run out :P

Thanks for the review man, i'm gonna play this! looks amazing, such a great challenge for hardcore mario gamers like me :D

  • 11:27 - 11:36 On what you said, I didn't have an enjoyable experience at all playing the original. I was just thinking "Oh my god, Super Mario Bros was the best game ever made, I have to buy it and have a ton of fun with it." But instead it turned out to be the hardest game I've ever played. Infact I couldn't even get past world 1 without dying. And i never got to see the ending. So now that you said that it's for people who defeated the first easly, super mario bros 2 defenetly not for me. NDAI

  • @sMCCarthyTV1 wow, you're such a fucking loser, man. i'm not being a troll, you just really suck if you say SMB 1 was the hardest game you ever played. Simply unbelievable.

  • @KurtKokaine1 Why do keep keeping track my comments?! Stop stocking me!

  • @sMCCarthyTV1 yeah, that's what i'm doin'....orrrrr, i could just be watching through all of these videos, reading comments, and notice patterns of really bizarre and stupid posts made by the same person. One things for sure, you sure are consistent ; )

  • I find it interesting that this was held back in North America as I heard we got the harder versions of games like Battletoads - allegedly to prevent kids from renting them and just beating them over a weekend. Then again, there's a monumental difference between the target audience of Battletoads and SMB.

  • @XJVHS Oh yeah. I forgot that this game was made in Japan and this was the best they could do.

  • Thanks for the tips "K". Maybe when I get the game on Amazon I'll know the secret of playing Super Mario Bros 2. The game looks pretty easy, well... as long as you know all the secrets and know all the warps and enemies.

  • I don't really see the diffence with Toadstool/peach. She just looks like she's facing front wards

  • Isn't it weird that there are fireball streams in the water in 8-4?

  • このアメリカ人は私が一日でこの試合に勝てるようにダムがあります!とても簡単...

    *tranlaton*

You amerikans are so dumb! i beat this game in a day! so easy...

    P.S in my engurish good?

  • @shamrock5540 That is probably one of those cases that someone at Nintendo Japan with poor english skills made that translation. That's why it won't make sense, like you said. Anyone can make a better end screen text than this here.

  • 0:17. ???

  • 06:19, can't you just wait to time to run out so you die that way?

  • 8-2's exit is retarded.

    So is 8-3's path.

  • 11:41 and blindfolded.

  • thankyou!!

  • 0:17 wtf?!

  • 0:17 - was that an emulator glitch or is it possible to go THROUGH the pipes like that?

    just wondering

  • i have beaten the entire game

i sat 6 hours in front of my tv, having anger and i even got overfrustrated...

just... don't play it... it is not worth your time

  • You "can" kill yourself at that world 5 warpzone, just let the time run out lol.

  • To get worlds A-D you can't warp. I want to play them and so far i beat the game 4 times. Beat it 4 times and i still think its as hard as $H!T.

  • Aqualung, I salute you for this walkthrough. You are a legend!

  • Can you do a Mario 3 review?

  • did you get this on wii virtual console?

  • @ Nickj109 I believe they changed it on the SNES version so that you can access world 9 and A-D via not taking a warpzone, you no longer require beating the game 8 times. Also I believe game overs on the SNES version no longer take you back to the start of the world.

Another nifty thing about the SNES one is that it lets you save what level your on and you can choose what level you want to play out of the levels you've passed, where as the original only lets you save what world your on.

  • 1) The world 8 warp zone isn't forced upon you, you can wait out the time and die.

    2) You forgot to mention the red piranha plants found in pipes will still come out of the pipe when standing next to them, only when standing on top will they not spawn. This is different to the green ones as the green ones do stop spawning when standing next to the pipe as well as when on the top.

  • 1 person fought in ww2

  • I'm surprised Nintendo had mercy with that world 8 warp zone. It may not seem like it, but at least the warp zone didn't lead to world 1.

  • The whole business with the Mario sequels was a major fubar on part of Nintendo.

No disrespect to the American Mario 2, but it's just way too different to be a sequel to Mario 1. It definitely deserves it's place in the franchise, but not as a sequel. But what can you do. It's either get the weird sequel or this painfully difficult game that loses it's enjoyment by the 15th death.

  • I was "with" this game until the 8-4 fire pit maze.

That is unbelievably retarded. What's next, you have to collect 56 coins and a starman, and crouch down so a tornado can take you to Bowser?

  • @DrJohnCockwalrus, Nice Castlevania II reference.

  • @DrJohnCockwalrus

You forgot about aligning the planets on Friday the 13th, and whispering "Bloody Mary" into a mirror three times with the lights off.

...Or was it the White Materia and a GameShark? Maybe I'm confusing my methods, here. But at least one of those two, anyway, would also be necessary. Totally.

  • @DrJohnCockwalrus nope chuck testa

  • @DrJohnCockwalrus Be careful- the Starnan might be the Death Star- one look at it and you will die.

  • I think this game was designed to be Japan's revenge for Hiroshima and Nagisaki.

  • when I get a famicom and a disc system I'm going to get to world 9, and A, and B, and C, and D!

  • You can actualy die at the warp zone to world 5 from world 8! remember, the time zone can kill you when it runs out ;)

  • while watching this I was thinking, worst case scenario: flying fish + wind storm. 30 seconds later he was in world 7-1...

  • anyone ever heard of all night nippon super mario bros? instead of toad being at the end of the castles they were japanese celebrities

  • @jhonnydrama yes, Sydlexia did an article on it

  • At least Japan got the frustration and not us Americans

  • the warpzone on 8-1 that sends you back to world 5, can you kill yourself by letting the time run out?

  • @GoodMicWork i guess even if u have one life ive only played the SNES lost levels version of this & The game boy color super mario bros deluxe SMB2 Japan is unlocked if you get over 300.000 points while playing the original super mario bros mode

  • a B-?

  • Good review! I'm glad this version never got released in the US to be honest with you because in my opinion it's too much like the original with too few variations and I can imagine that if I was 8 years old again I'd have probably been extremely bored with it.

  • "And as you're probably expecting...this stage is a bitch" LMAO Best delivery I've heard on your reviews Ken.

  • see the glitch at 17 seconds

  • See when I played this I was 7 and I was playing it on the SuperMario Deluxe game on the GBC. The only differences are;

-the wind storms are replaced by ether longer platforms, springs, or the original path that the wind skipped over

-some of the backgrounds are changed

-After you run through the correct path in the bowser castles, a tone will play to let you know that you're correct.

The game overall isn't too bad in difficultly, you just have to think :) ah the memiories

  • Good walkthrough, like always. I think most of us wouuld agree that this is inferior to the american version.

At 6:19, you're not completly screwed. Just let the timer run out.

  • "The Princess is looking much finer now that she had her nose job".

  • @Retro8bit I guess she got nose job. It really just looks like she's facing forwards.

  • Frustrating? This game looks insane. How could the Japanese find this fun?

  • @mopbrothers it's not really insane

there's a lot of trickery in it but you can figure it out without ridiculous amounts of studying--it gives you juuuust enough information

still, it's got some of that inscrutable Japanese flavor to it, yeah

I think part of it is maybe that you were supposed to work the problems in a group with your friends

to see truer insanity, check out AVGN's Milon's Secret Castle review, or a Legacy of the Wizard walkthrough, or this monstrosity: tinyurl(.)com/2euphuy

  • Ugh...I did not know half of the secrets you had on this episode! Maybe I'll do another RunThrough episode with a rematch of this game. Good job!

  • man the wind blows. nice pun!

  • This game looks ruthless

  • Great review as always.. but i really wish you had taken one of the poisonous mushrooms just to see what it does to you!!!

  • @shiggadee

    he explained that

its just like getting hit by an enemy.

  • @shiggadee: Getting a poisoned mushroom in this game is basically the equivalent of taking a hit.

  • @JayOsWorld: Thanks.

  • Actually, Mario Bros 2 is not as hard as it is but however, Castlevania, Contra and Gradius is going to tear your hair out.

  • ohmygodgreatidea! aqualung you should do a review walkthrough of... wait for it... Live a Live! it's one of the most amazing RPGs ever! it would be fantastic!

  • Wow, some of those things are horribly devilish! Like having to ignore the invincibility star in 8-2, and the "can't stop to catch your breath or you're back in the loop" part of 8-4. People would have been banging their heads against the wall!

  • @yunakitty when me and my aunt played played it on lost levels years ago we were!

  • Hmmmm... wind storm.... is that where megaman 6 got that from?

  • @themusicman17 6 ya what about 4 and 9

  • this reminds me of super mario frustration.

  • In the All-Stars version, after you beat World 8 it goes to *World A-D automatically.

*It goes to World 9 if you still beat it w/out warps.

  • The fish are called Cheep-Cheeps. Just thought I'd let you know, but nevertheless AGR, you never cease to amaze me with your review/walkthroughs :)

  • If you hit the decoy Bowser with flower fire, does it reveal a different enemy?

  • Yeah, he shows it in the first part and he turns into a Goomba.

  • @InvaderPet I can confirm this - No.

  • Now that I think about it, kids would probably fear Mario if this came out in '88.

  • Thanks for your work, Aqualung! It makes me cringe to think about how many takes took place in the making.

  • There is one way to kill yourself at Warp 5 is world 8. Wait till the time runs out.

  • "use the pipe to give you some height" -Aqualungamereviews (3:29)

  • Whoa! That was a weird glitch at 0:17!

  • @videogamester07

Japan has a weird culture. They would do stuff like that, unlike us in North America who normally wouldn't.

And I don't consider US Mario 2 canon. There is no connection to the other games.

  • Hey Aqualung, keep those vids coming man, I've been watching u for over a year now, and dig your style.

In regards to the extra levels, well judging by this vid you beat the game fair and square so why not treat yourself to say maybe a Japanese version of the Game Genie, if there is one :( , but for hypothetical sake if there is u could do that and then post the vids of the extra levels. No one would hold it against you this game is harder than frozen shit on sub zero Wisconsin winter night.

  • do a fire emblem walktrough!

  • Hey you little Goo Bag... Where's my fucking video of Game A man?!!

What kind of shit is this? Why is it so darn hard? (Said yo Mumma)

I know everyone else fucking hates Doki Doki except me it seems, but .. well.. FUCK this for a game of Darts! This game is SHIT compared to the Mario 2 we had over here.

WART is hard enough for me!

  • ur prolly one of my faves on youtube. I prolly had never found u though if I never bought that DVD renegade reviewers.

  • Holy crap, I remember playing this game - it was an unlockable for Super Mario Bros. DX for the Game Boy Color. Yeah, it's definitely for hardcore gamers.

  • @agmendelssohn Mario DX butchered Mario 2. It kept the Mario 1 physics so getting to that pipe in 7-2 is a real bitch.

  • "Peach is paved"

    A typo, what?

  • i can speed run the original super mario bros in under 8 min, but this cocksucker game i've been working on it for 6 months and i just made it to level 8-4. you are truley a master of your domain.

  • the name of the flying fish is cheep cheep......

  • I don't blame the Japanese for not releasing this to North America. Only someone like you who explains how to beat it in great detail could convince me of it's toughness.

As for the hidden levels, who's seriously willing to go through all that in one sitting just to unlock them? Better off just beating the first 8 levels and calling it good. You go through enough crap just beating it.

  • Excellent review, keep up the good work

  • 6:16 you can let the time kill you.

  • Is there a repro cart for NES? Because I don't have a Famicom and don't plan on buying one...

  • @NesRetroGamer Sadly, no! However, there are two alternative options. First up, Super Mario All Stars for SNES. It has a game called "Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels", which is the actual Japanese Super Mario Bros 2, just with a 16-bit colored update.

The second option is that it's on the Wii Virtual Console. It's just 5 US Dollars and as challenging as ever.

    Take your pick, bub!

  • @LBTUploader

lol, sad thing is, I have the SNES version and I knew that the Lost Levels was actually Mario2. I just never thought of it

    thanks for reminding me though!

  • Beating the game 8 times to get to 4 extra worlds? That goes on the list of my "brutaly ridiculous list"

Another example of a bonus on this list is in pokemon Leafgreen/ fire red, where you have to beat the Pokemon league 200 FRICKEN TIMES to see an extra doll in some retard's house :P

  • lol 0:16 haaaax!

  • In world Eight, where the warp takes you to world Five, you can just let time run out to kill yourself.

  • I hold out hope you might, in the future, do the Letter Worlds. Those are the REAL fun! D-1 holds perhaps the worst memories for me...

Anyway, good job making it through Masochistic Mario...I mean SMB2j. And good review.

  • 5:27 - Good lord, Touhou Mario all up in this.

  • To get to World 9, you have to beat the game WITHOUT warps.

If you want to get to Worlds A-D, do you have to beat the game 8 times without warps?

  • @Nickj109 I know world 9 works only if you don't warp. I'm not so sure if you can warp and get the A-D worlds.

  • @AqualungGameReviews Warping doesn't matter for the lettered worlds. I've warped once and still got the Star on the screen as proof.

  • @AqualungGameReviews Well this version is even harder then the All-Stars version (now on Wii) and I'm glad people can download this Famicom Disk one on Virtual Console, but I wonder if some of the SMB glitches would work like getting Fire Power as Small Mario (seen in one of my videos). By the way what's the best method you use to capture NES games like this for YouTube? Thanks.

  • Comment removed

  • @AqualungGameReviews you can get the all stars version. in that game, you can save your progress of each stage (eg. you save/get a game over on world 8-4, you continue on 8-4 [but it doesn't save midway points].) and to unlock worlds A-D, you just have to beat the game once.

  • @AqualungGameReviews

I checked a faq for this game and the person that wrote it said that while you have to play without warps for world 9 it didn't say anything about having to play straight through 8 times to get to A through D. I'm GUESSING that you can play with warps to get the A-D levels after the 8th playthrough

  • @Nickj109 I don't think it matters for World A-D. I think you just have to beat it 8 times with or without warps. Either way, you'll get a star on the title screen. With 8 stars, you can access World A-D.

  • On an interview with Miyamoto, he said yes, the game will be hard for first time players so he put a sticker on the box that says "For Super Players". Then he said he doesn't know how the Americans are doing since they released this game on VC. He said: "so, how is the game? Is It hard?"

I found that hilarious for some reason.

  • @Nickj109 "Is it hard, Americans? Does it HURT you? I FEED UPON YOUR MISERY."

  • @StarkMaximum

    "Does it hurt? DOES IT??"

"I gladly feast on your despair!"

    (And some other things.)

I can seriously see him saying that now... @_@

  • @StarkMaximum Ha ha. It IS hard, though.

  • 0:16 THE PIPE IS A LIE!!!!!

  • good god this game looks like hell. no wonder they didnt release it

  • And with that the Japanese and their love for puzzle platformers lived happily ever after. :D Actually it turns out Nintendo needed to tweak a few things to make Super Mario Bros 1 marketable, as far as memory serves, but only a few tweeks, to relase this game to the US masses a LOT of work would have been needed. Also I noticed the lack of mentioning Koopa Troopers instead it's just turtles now, I blame this game. Plus as before there's no mentions of the flying fish's real name; Cheap Cheap.

  • Am I weird to think that the one we got in America is better than the one in Japan?

  • @BBoy2020 Not really; it's a matter of personal preference, after all. Actually, Japan did get the American Mario 2 under the title Super Mario USA, in case you didn't know.

  • @KatsuyaElric It does come down to personal preference, but it makes me respect the American SMB2 more, that the first 3 SMB games are almost completely different each other. The original SMB2 just seems like an updated SMB1. Though obviously people could like this game more anyway because of it's challenging difficulty.

  • Actually you can kill yourself wait for the timer to run out.

  • About the world 5 warp zone, you can kill yourself. You just wait until the time expires.

  • 0:16 did he just go through the side of a pipe?

  • @bunnydo22 UT it may be an illusion wall.

  • @bunnydo22 its a glitch if you hit an object at the right angle you go through it

  • Another great Review/Walktrough,i agree, that this SMB 2 would be too diffucult for America/Europe,plus,it`s really just a mission pack.I dont understand why so many "reviewers" bash American SMB2 saying it isnt true Mario game

  • @metalcoola: From what I've read over the past 20+ years, the American SMB2 was praised by most critics and reviewers despite not being a true Super Mario game, including myself.

  • Comment removed

  • Basically if you were getting tired of kicking Bowser's ass and saving the Princess, try this game and it'll kick you in the balls instead! Yay!

  • So which game do you think is harder: this or Silver Surfer?

  • Never played this game but it certainly does look sadistic.

  • 0:17 is that a glitch?!

  • Nice that you covered this game. I wasn't even aware of all the differences between the first and second games (like the wind). I have to say I never enjoyed the game at all, even though I've only played the SNES version. The Doki Doki Panic converted version was in my view a better and much more fun game over-all.

  • 6:18 maybe you can kill yourself if you wait for the time to run out....

  • Another dumb thing, you can get on the ceiling in 7-4 and run to Bowser only to be completely stuck and having to wait for the timer to run out.

There's another hidden power-up in 8-4, above the pipe with the two flying koopas.

  • uh....that was awful, review is great but that was awful

    0:54

  • The SNES version of this game (found in Super Mario All-Stars) is nowhere as cruel that you don't have to beat it EIGHT times! Beat it ONCE, and that's it! Welcome to World A!

There's no World 9 on that version, though. At least I haven't seen it.

  • They should have released it here instead of the FAKE mario 2.

  • Aqualung, I'm sure you know this already, but the Japanese SMB2 was eventually released in North America as Super Mario Bros.: The Levels on the Super NES game Super Mario All-Stars. From what I remember, Nintendo made the game SLIGHTLY easier. I remember that they gave confirmation sounds for the puzzle paths, and Worlds 9,A,B,C, and D were available after beating the game.

  • -0:17: WTF, you just ran right through that pipe!

    -6:53: Now THAT'S dirty.

-11:08 to 11:15: This bonus level had platforms that spell out a message in Japanese. Would anybody that can read Japanese and was hardcore enough to play every single level in this game care to tell me what it is?

  • @Loader2K1 It spells out 'arigato' which is 'thank you'. Not sure why it's in Katakana since that's used for loan words. I don't really know that much Japanese.

  • @noneckboy: Thanks. Also, according to JayOsWorld, the first part of the message was "Mario," so I assume the entire message was "Thank you, Mario."

  • @noneckboy Maybe its in Katakana so it would be more likely to be readable for a kid? Just a guess, because propably Hiragana would have been better for that purpose...

However, on Wikipedia they say "Most computers in [the 1980s] used katakana instead of kanji or hiragana for output." - maybe that's simply where it comes from.

  • What happened at 0:16? o_O

Also, if you accidentally go into the pipe in world 8-2, you can wait for your time to run out, and you don't have to go backwards.

  • What happened at 0:16? o_O

  • @NostalgicSince2005 That's true, didn't think of that lol

  • this is what you get when you put Super Mario Bros. and Ninja Gaiden in a blender

  • Great walk-through!!

  • wallthrough at 0:15 xD
