Well, according to an earlier 60 Minutes report, most of the "intelligence" that Colin Powell used to make the case at the U.N. came from some Iraqi claiming to have worked at the lab manufacturing WMDs. It turns out the guy wasn't even in Iraq at the time and all his information was false.

Why did we base our whole justification for going to war on the word of some unknown Iraqi?

The truth is we shouldn't have gone to war. Colin Powell said in February of 2001 that Saddam had no significant WMDs. Saddam had no connection to 9/11 or Al Queda. Plus, Dick Cheney said in 1994 that the US would create a quagmire in the region if we took out Saddam.

Most of the chemical and biological weapons Iraq had were sold to him by the US during the Iran-Iraq War. Even if Iraq had WMDs, we did not have cause to start a pre-emptive war.

Yes, but we took care of the invasion of Kuwait in 1991. Even Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice said in early 2001 that Saddam were not a threat to their neighbors and did not have significant weapons capabilities. The sanctions and no-fly zones would have been cheaper than the war and we'll likely have a small contigent of troops in Iraq long after the war is over, just like we do in Germany, Japan, and Korea.
