I am a rookie in ubuntu. I have tried it for a week. I think this version is not that user friendly. The Start menu is missing. I don't want to type an application name in search box every time I need to start a program. It is quite annoying. Besides, I can't find any ways to download themes in select themes screen easily. Where is it?
Can I open two file manager at the same time? It is too difficult to use.
okay um im gonna dual boot my computer and wanna know why is ubuntu good? i know it doesnt have viruses and its free but id like to know why people use it and what are they using it for is it programming if yes tell me more :P im new to this and i love new tech (even though ubuntu isnt cuz it wasnt released yesterday :P) that i discover (on my own) so yh any free tips for the new guy??

@RodKvh hi, i am having problems with my ubuntu. um i updated it about 2 weeks ago maybe 3, from today. my tool bar wont come up on the side at all. i bring my mouse over to the side and there is nothing. also everything on the top right, is gone. there is no ubuntu symbol to shutdown or anything. all there is are: file, edit, view, go, bookmarks, and help. and those are on the top left. iv tried the help but it doesnt deal with my problem. what do u think is the problem. thanks
@DoctorUnplugged Your computer "Savviness" has to be anywhere between that of an average windows user and an an IT guy. But if you're a mac user, you're screwed.
@1maxroman Basically, it has a more active developer community, meaning features get added more quickly, and bugs get fixed quicker. It's more open-source as it's not controlled by Oracle as OpenOffice is.
Well it should be better then, but I see it as being just as good (or bad) as OpenOffice
Actually it's not as good as OpenOffice, because, when I tried to use "Format Painter" in Libre, it failed to work. I tried many times, even rebooted, still no luck
My computing life uses word processors a lot, and I'm aware of many w.p. tools that most people don't use. When a friend urged me2use Linux (with OOo) I knew it wouldn't have the richness of features of MSWord. I was right

how much do u have to pay for tha running system or can u download a free version off it i really need to know i need a new runnig system that will work 100%
@MACA001able It's 100% free. Just go to the Ubuntu Homepage (google it) and download it. But I suggest waiting for 1 week as a new release is about to come out!
okay.. i just dumped fedora because it was too complicated for me. i only had one user on the computer and yet somehow it wasnt the root user. so it was basically impossible for me to install anything, like adobe flash, since i couldnt get access to my own freakin root user account. not to mention my terrible skills with terminal. so im curious, is ubuntu any easier than fedora? because if it is, im going with that. fedora has too much coding for me.. im not that good with computers tbh
@davidscloud Ubuntu is more user-friedly and noob-friedly, fedora needs a longer time to get used to, but both are great systems. Just try both of them out, eg in a virtual machine
very cool just got handbrake working on my laptop with Ubunta 11.04 and it works fantastic for riping dvd's to my hard drive

@phyriz007 Have you tried Wine? It is a program that runs .exe's(windows programs) on Linux. Its fairly easy to find i think its one of the suggested downloads.
Just Say No to ubuntu and any other distro that uses mono and that apps like banshee and fspot that used it for a codebase. It is patent encumbered and we are given info by richard stallman a great stalwart of gpl and linux, to avoid it entirely. Mono is moot now anyway given vala and go.
hey, i was wondering if u cud help me :) i got windows 7 as primary OS, and i got the 32bit Ubuntu installed via wubi. i was wondering if it is possible to install ANOTHER linux os, and if so how and which one? i aint a very good person at partitioning and what not :')
@TheDarkUnleashed I am not good at partitioning either. Yea you install another Linux operating system like jolicloud or linux mint based on their installers for windows.

Ubuntu 11.04 is really a giant turd. Unity is shit and the OS is buggy as hell! There is a bug affecting lots of people that cripples a multi-MBps connection to dail-up speeds. Canonical, please never release such BS again. Delay a release if you have to! If you keep this BS up I'll go to Fedora or even windoz if I have to. So frustrated!!!
I'm wanting to use linux on my laptop as it tends to lag with windows 7 basic 32bit (its 4 years old). What would be the most noob friendly transition to linux and how much memory would I need to run it efficiently?
alright, i installed ubuntu 11.04. its kind of confusing at first but it sees pretty easy to navigate once you learn how linux operates. I'm liking it so far :)
@InfinitelyGalactic Not for Vista, hehehe. Look at my channel for a video called "House Fire made with Blender 3D" watch it tell me what you think. Then read it's description and tell me if I'm not alone.
Vista sucked, I got Ubuntu at the beginning of this month, it does more on the SAME machine than what Vista could, ever.
@MinzGeygong In your log in screen click the user but before you enter the password look at the bottom of your screen. Select Ubuntu (Classic) and log in as usual. That should get rid of the annoying Unity desktop.

Im new to linux and im thinking about chainging my netbook's OS on it, it has XP home on it and would chaging it to ubuntu be better and do i have to download a netbook version of ubuntu
Awesome and informative videos. Im pretty new to the linux world and have learned a lot from you. I've recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Laptop. The sound is not working for me. I'm searching all over for any help on either drivers, terminal instructions or any other additional download needed to make it work. Any idea on how to fix??? I have a Nvidia Geforce GT 540m.
@HAFhotandfluffy Basically, that means that you're graphics card can't support 3d acceleration. In order to get Unity, you'll need to install Unity 2D. Just google around, and you'll find detailed instructions on how to install Unity 2D. You could also try to download the proprietary drivers for your graphics card by clicking 'System'>'Administration'>'Hardware (or Additional) Drivers' and see if there's anything to install. Hope that helps...good luck!
I have and like the Ubuntu 10.10 better. I have the Windows 7 theme and like it a lot.
The 'dockie' on the left side of the screen irrates me. It just gets in the way. If it could be moved I would like that very much, but I haven't found a way to do it.
Another thing I have lost my network connection with Ubuntu 11.04. I run mobile racks in my computer which allows me to just slip in a new hard drive and boot. Windows 7 works fine, but when I put Ubuntu in the router LED goes out..no connection.
too much unnecessary talk about backgrounds. watched about two minutes and then closed. Really, a video of any kind has only 30 secs or maybe 45 secs to grab attention and you wasted that time talking about the beta release and not to be used in production etc. just mention its a beta and move on... anyway your video was boring. sorry.
@TheTerraxa You're welcome, my vids certainly aren't for everyone. This one was supposed to be rather in depth, and some like that, others don't. There are plenty other reviews out there. ;-)
@RaveBlaiz Yup, it is possible...you'll need to install 'wine' on Ubuntu which is a compatibility layer, and then google 'wine hq' and search that site for the game you're wanting to install to see if it works well. There's no guarantee that it will work, but there are usually ways to make them work. Good question. :-)
@dsitek Yup, it is possible...you'll need to install 'wine' on Ubuntu which is a compatibility layer, and then google 'wine hq' and search that site for the Windows application you're wanting to install to see if it works well. There's no guarantee that it will work, but there are usually ways to make them work. Good question. :-)
@InfinitelyGalactic Thanks for the quick reply. In this version of Ubuntu, how do you tell what applications are running? Is there an equivalent to the Windows ALT+Tab?
hello i have fedora and i hate it and i have burned an iso to a cd but when i try reboot and install ubuntu nothing happens i just get the fedora screen everytime
@adrianstelianpopa Make sure that you've set your BIOS to boot from the CD drive first. Then you should see a purple boot screen, and you'll know it's Ubuntu.
Great video. I have installed ubuntu 11.04 to my win7 (dual boot), but unfortunately I have many problems with ubuntu. The biggest problems are the windows. If I have a window open, and then I open a new window, then it don't switches automaticly . I have to right click on the application's icon on the side bar and then select the application. Please help me. I'm a very newbie at using ubuntu.
@balagesaysthecool Hi there, sorry to hear you're having issues. You could try to move your mouse to an empty space on the desktop after launching the program from the sidebar. Also, make sure you've installed all the available updates in 'Update Manager' as that might solve any bugs you might have. Good luck and sorry I couldn't help more. If the problem continues, just google it, and see if it's something widespread and if there's a fix. :-)
looks really cool i want to upgrade now but i don't want to go through the whole process up installing programs again so i may just download it to a thumbdrive and wait for the 12.04 upgrade
I don"t know why people dont like ubuntu 11.04 ... i loveee it. I have unity 2D because my sistem cant handle the 3D version . In my opinion ubuntu 11.04 is much better than windows 7... P.D: Thanks for this awsome review
I would love to see how Ubuntu Server can beat Red Hat/CentOS in server availability. For that I guess they need to partner some hosts, provide better education solution (I love online training) and make Ubuntu Certification more popular for server admin.
windows always will be the same shit no matter if microsoft brings windows 8 .... 15 etc etc always virus will be the killer for them . the present and the future is LINUX wellcome to everyone now android " is taking the world but keep in mind android is linux " thank you google to spread LINUX around the world
I just tested 11.04 by running it from my HTC tattoo on my computer, have not tested any Linux distro in a year or two, this was big suprice to me, its odd but when you get used too it I bet its awsome. :)
can someone help me? i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook as a dual boot with win 7, it worked fine until around a month or so in, then the icon displaying wireless internet connection started to tell me "connecting to *wireless connection name*" then after 5 minutes or so of 'connecting' it just tells me "wireless connections available" and will not connect to my wireless internet. i plan on updating but cannot, for obvious reasons.
@NonisMonster i understand that, i mainly believe it could be because i didnt update it to the latest 11 version, but now i cannot update because it is not connecting to the internet
@MetalUpYoArse don't worry if you are inside ubuntu and you see message about virus , because they believe that you are using a windows platform . those message is just drama that programmers are putting on the internet to find more windows victims
ITS CRAP! Unity is just a big pile of sh*t forced on us by Ubuntu. I loved Ubuntu with Gnome 2 not a fan of Gnome3 and KDE is just bugy and slow. Never thought the day would come when I sent money to Bill Gates but windows 7 is rocking and wow Netflix, itunes and yes, yes, yes STEAM all work awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@spamllpitdept Not sure, they just presented themselves as 'Linux for Human Beings' so that's what the masses thought was easiest to use. That's still Ubuntu's primary goal, whereas openSUSE is designed to an awesome Linux system, not trying hide technical details from the user, much better for learning how Linux works imho.
@spamllpitdept openSUSE targets more experienced and office users somehow. But you have a general feel that you have a better control of the system through the desktop, to my opinion. Until previous versions openSUSE was giving emphasis to KDE instead of Gnome. KDE is a little bit heavier than Gnome, maybe some people are oriented to Gnome. Well openSUSE is also a very popular distro to...Germany :) Now, while Novell is by side, it is more oriented to buisness world, and home advanced users.

no, linux is the most secure os (except for maybe free bsd). windows is 2nd and mac is worst.
There are only like 2 viruses for linux, and even if you system is inffected, it won't have much of an effect unless you run it with root privleges.

The Ubuntu is great OS, but how about the safety they said Linux OS is easy to hack is that true ???

11.04 with a zen kernel is the fastest and most appealing ubuntu os.
Do you happen to know why they made 11.10 have a dark theme instead of the light grey?

I'm searching all over for any help on either drivers, terminal instructions or any other additional download needed to make it work. Any idea on how to fix??? I have a Nvidia Geforce GT 540m.

HAFhotandfluffy 6 months ago
@HAFhotandfluffy Basically, that means that you're graphics card can't support 3d acceleration. In order to get Unity, you'll need to install Unity 2D. Just google around, and you'll find detailed instructions on how to install Unity 2D. You could also try to download the proprietary drivers for your graphics card by clicking 'System'>'Administration'>'Hardware (or Additional) Drivers' and see if there's anything to install. Hope that helps...good luck!

is this the "alternative" or is this the "desktop"?
charkee167 6 months ago
I have and like the Ubuntu 10.10 better. I have the Windows 7 theme and like it a lot.
The 'dockie' on the left side of the screen irrates me. It just gets in the way. If it could be moved I would like that very much, but I haven't found a way to do it.
Another thing I have lost my network connection with Ubuntu 11.04. I run mobile racks in my computer which allows me to just slip in a new hard drive and boot. Windows 7 works fine, but when I put Ubuntu in the router LED goes out..no connection.
dhansel001 6 months ago
too much unnecessary talk about backgrounds. watched about two minutes and then closed.

There are plenty other reviews out there. ;-)

Is it possible to play games that are designed for windows on Ubuntu?
RaveBlaiz 6 months ago
@RaveBlaiz Yup, it is possible...you'll need to install 'wine' on Ubuntu which is a compatibility layer, and then google 'wine hq' and search that site for the game you're wanting to install to see if it works well. There's no guarantee that it will work, but there are usually ways to make them work. Good question. :-)

InfinitelyGalactic 7 months ago
@InfinitelyGalactic Thanks for the quick reply. In this version of Ubuntu, how do you tell what applications are running? Is there an equivalent to the Windows ALT+Tab?
dsitek 7 months ago
@dsitek Yup, ALT+Tab works the exact same way. As well as a Mac Expose feature as well, similar to Aero Flip.

adrianstelianpopa 7 months ago
@adrianstelianpopa Make sure that you've set your BIOS to boot from the CD drive first. Then you should see a purple boot screen, and you'll know it's Ubuntu.

Great video. I have installed ubuntu 11.04 to my win7 (dual boot), but unfortunately I have many problems with ubuntu. The biggest problems are the windows. If I have a window open, and then I open a new window, then it don't switches automaticly . I have to right click on the application's icon on the side bar and then select the application. Please help me. I'm a very newbie at using ubuntu.
balagesaysthecool 7 months ago
@balagesaysthecool Hi there, sorry to hear you're having issues. You could try to move your mouse to an empty space on the desktop after launching the program from the sidebar. Also, make sure you've installed all the available updates in 'Update Manager' as that might solve any bugs you might have. Good luck and sorry I couldn't help more. If the problem continues, just google it, and see if it's something widespread and if there's a fix. :-)

I would love to see how Ubuntu Server can beat Red Hat/CentOS in server availability. For that I guess they need to partner some hosts, provide better education solution (I love online training) and make Ubuntu Certification more popular for server admin.

can someone help me? i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook as a dual boot with win 7, it worked fine until around a month or so in, then the icon displaying wireless internet connection started to tell me "connecting to *wireless connection name*" then after 5 minutes or so of 'connecting' it just tells me "wireless connections available" and will not connect to my wireless internet. i plan on updating but cannot, for obvious reasons.
MetalUpYoArse 8 months ago
@MetalUpYoArse There could be lots of reasons for that, friend...Not necessarily because of dual-booting...
NonisMonster 8 months ago
@NonisMonster i understand that, i mainly believe it could be because i didnt update it to the latest 11 version, but now i cannot update because it is not connecting to the internet
MetalUpYoArse 8 months ago
@MetalUpYoArse ask to ubuntu they can send ya the cd installer with the last version
vectoranime123 8 months ago
@MetalUpYoArse don't worry if you are inside ubuntu and you see message about virus , because they believe that you are using a windows platform . those message is just drama that programmers are putting on the internet to find more windows victims
vectoranime123 8 months ago

Why is Ubuntu so much more popular and wide-spread than openSUSE?
spamllpitdept 8 months ago
@spamllpitdept Not sure, they just presented themselves as 'Linux for Human Beings' so that's what the masses thought was easiest to use. That's still Ubuntu's primary goal, whereas openSUSE is designed to an awesome Linux system, not trying hide technical details from the user, much better for learning how Linux works imho.
InfinitelyGalactic 8 months ago
@InfinitelyGalactic New numbers show that the popularity of Ubuntu is dropping , and more people are start to use Linux Mint ...
maw88ify 7 months ago
@spamllpitdept openSUSE targets more experienced and office users somehow. But you have a general feel that you have a better control of the system through the desktop, to my opinion. Until previous versions openSUSE was giving emphasis to KDE instead of Gnome. KDE is a little bit heavier than Gnome, maybe some people are oriented to Gnome. Well openSUSE is also a very popular distro to...Germany :) Now, while Novell is by side, it is more oriented to buisness world, and home advanced users.
