lol Robert must have forgotten the lyrics, that sounds too much like a poor improv than an alternate lyrical take... figurehead is a masterpiece, depressing as hell, but I suppose it's worth it
This is fake. This was a studio demo from 1981 in france. Not the same as the video here. There is a video for this version where Robert is wearing white shirt and bandana.
No it isn't. This IS the from the Echo Des Bananes performance. I have the whole performance and this is definitely from that session. That one you are talking about is Pippbrook Mill 1981. This is not that.
I LOVE THIS MUSIC FROM THIS TIME I KNOW IT WAS IN A DARK PLACE DRUNK PLACE self destructive place mad sad many feelings i love it ITS LIKE THE CORE OF THE CURE like it went deep i miss the band i miss Laurence its sad hes not in the band the FAMOUS 3 ARE THE BEST ROBERT SIMON AND LAURENCE THE TRUE CURE FOREVER
I got the name of our band - Les Figurines - because of this song...One of my favourite Cure's song..."With Figurines tighten and spiders inside them..."
@TheThirdSober he has forgotten the words and is just making sounds. I've had to do same when forgetting lyrics in the moment. As long as it sounds vaguely like words, only people who know the lyrics will notice. My guess is it was less of a problem for him in '82.

this is a great live version of this classic Cure song :) Robert's guitar sound is so crisp and thin and brittle, perfect!

wow he sounds incredible
& i dont know guitarbo
i like this kinda different beat of Lol compared to Boris, u can really sound a huge difference between '80 here & '86+
this sounds way more pornography ofcourse , & i like it, although boris was probably the best drummer
& i don't see a huge difference with the bass though
lovely performance (;

What a song by the way! One of my favourite Cure songs ever. I wish I was there back in 1982! (I could have, but perhaps wearing a diaper! :))

Does anybody know whether the string instruments were down-tuned, please? They kind of sound down-tuned to me.

The best Figurehead is on Paris CD, with the masterful Boris drumming.
Bass chorus good for Steve Severin, not for Simon.
I think PFT fits in this set...it's still a dark song even with a snappier beat.
It's a good performance. I don't think Robert's singing here is helpless...besides, isn't that his charm? lol
I agree that the core of their inspiration came from this lineup, but they couldn't sustain it without cracking up.

This is a special footage even though the video is slightly out of sync. But thank-you for posting it anyway. This is The Cure at its most intensive.

Wow I thought One Hundred Years, The Hanging Garden and Cold were the only songs that they played on this show.
The Figurehead really fits into it. Play For Today not so BUT it's still a brilliant song.
Look at them.. you can really tell how hard this time mustve been for them.. they look so wasted, Robert's singing sounds purely helpless.
This is rare as it is like the only live performance (in good quality) you can see during 1982 The Pornography era.

He changes the lyrics at one point. Can anyone tell what he's saying? it's so bleak and mumbly that I can't understand it.
That's not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm curious too...
but I can't understan what he said.
Oloferne8181 2 years ago
Could it be French Robert is trying to sing?
Or he forgot the lines, and just mumbled something?
hoffbill 2 years ago
he's high on drugs during this performance. he forgot the words and just mumbled something.

I think he does that on purpose because he knows he forgot. oh god I can't listen to any more.
