the PS3 comes with the "install other os" option... i'm gonna guess and say that it has no effect on your warranty. just a guess.

sony purposly make install other os because it was also made for linux

Yes, need to format the HDD, So pls backup your save files after install the Linux

Sure. Will make the PS3 have PC funtion, you can use MSN, Office, Movie Player (Support AVI,WMV,MP4,RMVB etc..), Music Player, Email Client, Internet also...

Never lost any save files, Because will make 2 partition for the PS3 console, one is for Gaming and one is for Linux.
