I saw them at a small club called The Troubadour in Hollywood before they went out on tour to support AJFA. I was disappointed because I realized the Jason Newsted, although a solid bassist, could never replace Cliff. As much as I wanted to love AJFA I felt, and still feel, that the songs were overly mechanical and the production quality stank.

@timeoftroubles well, it was more mechanical and technical, but they were able to pull it off. i mean, i think it was a natural progression. if you compare MoP and RTL to KEA, they're much more technical. i just think they took that element a little bit further with AJFA. but its not like they let that get in the way of their songwriting. i mean, that album has some of the meanest and most powerful riffs ive ever heard. as for the quality, well, they just made lars's drum kick drum too loud.

That's an excellent point. I've always felt that they didn't allow Jason to shine through to the best of his ability. When he was with Flotsam & Jetsam he was the star and his bass-lines were more than just heavy, they were artistic. That element of his style was never cultivated when he played with Metallica and it's a damn shame. Maybe the egos were too big to allow that to happen... Who knows?
