  • I've tried the advance variation of the french defense as white and it is probably of my least favorite games to play as white. Lately in the french after d4 and d5, I've just avoided the advance variation completely. It honestly leaves white defending for the beginning of the match and I prefer to pin down the enemy as much as possible right from the start.

  • awesome videos please done stop

  • At 7:04 I don't really see a threat with black bringing down his rook to c2. Couldn't you just advance your pawn with b4 and avoid the "bishop/pawn fork" if black were to play Rc3, like in your variation. Anyway, great vids. I love listening to your thought process. It's a blast watching GM's, prodigies, as well as players more on my level. Thanks and keep posting!

  • I just realized by watching this video, I don't value the threat of pawns enough. I should test taking pawns a couple of my next games to see if my position gets better because lately nobody has been making noticable blunders.

  • 9:26 a possibly better move for white would have been rook to h6. If black takes with the rook you recapture with the pawn and you have a pass pawn supported by the bishop. Then u would swing your rook to support it to further advance your pawn

  • Thank you so very much jrobi for all your hard work putting these fascinating chess videos on YouTube! My game has certainly improved as a result of watching them.

I don't know whether you've heard of The Master Game series? It was a chess competition for grandmasters broadcast by the BBC from around 1978-1983 and had me glued to the TV as a teenager. They are on YouTube too, put there by Sirbob1. Just put "The Master Game" and "chess" in the search box.

    Keep up the good work!

  • jrobi, how you strategically position your pieces?

  • jrobi, how do you strategically position your pieces?

  • at 12:17 white's king is on g7 and black's king is on e7, and with white to move, instead of playing g6, he should have tried to get his bishop onto h4 first (2 moves), and so that way, if white pushes his pawn to g6, it's a discovered check. And if black move king to e8, then when white takes pawn for pawn, black would be in check again, and the very next move, white would promote to queen! Game over...

  • hey there, where do you play at and is it free? im on pogo its fun and free and not sure where else to go play! thanks for the hard work keep it up.

  • @gqwild77 chess.com

  • hello.I think that in 9:27 you should play rook to h6 and then you could eventually double up your rooks to the h file after you move your king to the f2 square.

  • I think I am good

following question is bit stupid but pls tell me where do you get ratings from and how do u get ratings

do u have to be professional or international player like kasparov or anand

  • just a little comment, what would have happend if at min 12:06 you move your b pawn, in that way his bishop have two options, take it, or not take it, and if he takes, he is lost because now you can promote your pawn, and in any other position you can just move your bishop to attack his b pawn. i dont know, i just think that play is better than Kh4

  • is this really the strength of 1500-1600s?

  • brilliant, love your assement of self.

  • Very lucky. Just like 2 opponents I played the other week. I accepted draws but if gameplay was to go on I would have won

  • how come you play this bad but ur analysis is waaay better and u play way better when u look it over? are you playing blitz games or something?

  • @rebelsouljaz as the name suggests analysis is when you take some time to review your games, find blunders and point out missed strong moves.

  • @xPesKa i know that but if i were to do this much analysis on my games i wouldn't be as bad as he is. Just doesn't make sense, you'd think he would be better than this by now if he's analyzing his games this much.

  • @rebelsouljaz he's playing blitz, so blunders are common.

secondly, he is improving his game - he used to be rated ~800 when he started

  • Hi jrobi, I like watching your videos and games but I felt that you were playing very passively in this game. I don't want to brag or anything but if I was playing black against you in this game I am very confident that I would take solid control of this match and win with very little difficulty.

  • The reason he did not win is because he did not get rid of his useless bishop!

  • What time control do you play on FICS?

  • sorry to bother you jrobi but, what is ur current rating? Thanks!

  • your vids are amazing jrobi! definitely gonna subscribe to you

  • dont talk so much philiosophy

  • wanna see u loosing man

  • What's the deal with the rankings? I used to be ranked at 2300 when I played with Yahoo. This must be a different rating system because the people 1600 and under completely sucked on Yahoo.

  • at 12:10 after 1. ...BxRa4 white can reply with 2. b3 locking the pawn at b4 (a dark square for at least 2 moves if 2. ...Bxb3) and if 2. ...Bxb3 then 3. c6 Ba4 4. c7 Bd7 5. Kh4 b3 6. Bd2 black's move options are very limited, basically to king moves. play resumes 6. ...Kg6 7. Bc3 Kf5 7. Kh5 Ke4 8. Kh6.....black is in a losing position as white has 2 pawns ready for promotion with 1 piece protecting.

    ~Aqua

  • welcome the new kasparov....lol

i wanna ask what did u feel if u make a wrong move?

  • At around 9:30, couldn't white move Rh5 to Rh6 with the pawn protecting a capture? I'm just learning the game, and was curious about this...Great videos, by the way.

  • Chess stuff is always nice on youtube

  • You know what i notice in chess games. jrobichess, you black tried to gain advantage on the queen side when you tried to gain advantage on the king side, and it didn't work for black in the end. I think in this game if white tries to attack on the king side especially on the king side, white should follow, because it takes alot longer to break through with a queen side attack. than the King side attack.

  • Double isolated b pawns. Ouch.

  • can you play against jerry from chessnetwork??

both of you are the best chess channels on youtube

  • Although it was a draw, great game.

  • What was the time limit?

  • Which rating system are you using?

  • on the 2nd move, if you played Q h5 you would have dominant control of the center quadrant.

  • If you haven't read Silman's "How to Reassess your Chess", I highly recommend it!!

  • I appreciated your candor and honest analysis of this game. For example, the Qb3 move up front I believe was a clear blunder as you had stated, but as you also pointed out, certain moves which were clear to me immediately regarding your opponents moves also, including Rh8, seemed to balance you both out. Then again, hindsight is 20/20, right? lol Great vid! Thanks!

  • chess is addicting......puff puff

  • @daelsterdam but its not bad you you...... snuff snuff

  • @daelsterdam mhm. i suck at chess but i watch like crap loads of chess games every day. lol Hopefully ill get better soon by learning from these videos.

  • Ok, I am sorry for not seeing this, but couldn't potential move around 10:20 be like....King move to F2 instead of g2 and avoid that fork attack?

  • b5 was a positional mistake from black, since he doenst have the chance to kick the knight away from c5 anymore. If black left the pawn on b7, he could have kicke the knight on c5. b5 gave a glaring hole on c5-

  • I think fxg3 after blacks Nxg3 was not the best, since white doesnt get any real pressure on the f-pawn. Instead hxg3 would have given white more central pawns and a better pawns structure.

If I were black i would probably have played Nxe3 instead of Nxg3. Either way, black has the bishop pair and a superior position.

  • Hi Jrobi

Qb6 is quite a common idea for Black in the French advanced Black is looking for something like 4...Nc6 5.Nf3 Qb6 6.a3 c4 then the idea is to bring the Knight over to a5 and if allowed anchor it on b3.

Personally if I was Black I wouldnt have traded Queens as youre opponent did, I would have played c4 hoping to encourage White to make the trade Id say the doubled pawns are worth it to open a file for the rook.

  • At 7:00 black only has an opportunity to win a pawn if white doesnt play the correct moves (like your example of moving the pawn to b3), because it is easy to protect that pawn and you would undouble the pawns if black took the knight with the bishop. At 11:41 you had a nice outpost for your rook, also landing a check, with rook f6. It could have been a good move to improve your position, but i dont really know because i havent analyse it. Cheers

  • hey jrobi where do u go to play chess online? i need somewhere to play

  • hi im new to chess, when is it advisable to play doubled up pawns?

  • as long as it isnt in the center and its not on your castling side it's alright.

you also dont want to leave pawns isolated but it depends on the game.

  • Usually, you want something to compensate for a doubled pawn, like bishop pair or better development. Other factors, like if the doubled pawns are isolated or on an open file, is also important.

In this case, double pawns was okay, since the pawn on b3 controll the c4 square, and the extra rook-file for white has got on the a-file is used to put pressure on blacks a-pawn.

  • Never like stacked pawns in my games...i usually play English and if you somehow get stacked pawns during the english it doesnt end very well...never a win usually.

  • when I play white pawns B4 & D5 is my favorite position,99% of chances I`ll play Knight F3 right after.

  • care to share some?

  • Are you one of those guys who watches other peoples games of chess and comments endlessly on "seeing checkmate in 2 moves" and telling people they made the wrong move?

  • Good game.. I always watched your videos..

  • after the last set of rooks come off it seems that white can win with b3! if the bishop takes the c5 pawn queens. if not, then the black pawn on b4 will fall to whites bishop. at 12:03 am i right?

  • you're wrong. After b3??.

    Bxb3 -c6

    Ba4 - c7

    Bd7 and if c8

Bxc8. So nothing happened and white loses pawn.

  • Is this FIDE rating?

  • Could possibly be blitz...unsure

I've looked at the game using Fritz 11, It actually favours white after the queen trade despite the doubled b pawns! Very odd :)

  • I'm pretty sure in one of your earlier vids you mentioned that you only started playing chess 18 months or so ago and for you to be rated in the 1500s is very good progress. (I've been playing for 20 years and still can't get above the 1400s!). Keep up the good work!

  • @MrFunny1972 i play chess since about 1 year and got 1631 :) but i study a lot :P

  • my advice is NEVER to play doubled pawns. Very poor moves Qb3 and Be3.

later in the game your pawns were everywere, but not together. another thing is that white should try to use the king's side more in this opening. movieg ur pawn to the g5 is another mistake i think, beccause h:g5 leaves u with another doubled pawns structure.

  • My advice--never say never.:P There are moments where it is not only possible to play with doubled pawns but also advisable

  • Great stuff! Very educative -- thank you!

  • Why would you want black to capture hte bishop at 05:59?

You will have doubled pawns on two files and the kingside is weakened.

  • Interesting game jrobi. I definitely agree that 5. Qb3 was a mistake. You would have been better off with 5. Nf3. If he replied with Nc6 (likely), you could even have played 6. Bd3 and seen if he would fall for the trap, though he was probably too good for that.

Still an interesting game. And I do think the advance variation of the French is quite playable for white.

  • I have to say that your opponent was abetter player at that moment.Albeit having already surpassed that level +- I still learned some ideas :) (somethings I just don't see when I'm tired)

  • interesting video! i'd say you cheated death there a couple of times!

  • thats how alot of my games end up. but not with two people this skilled, we make more mistakes and what not.

  • Really nice game! Btw, is that a canadian accent? If it is, cool. If it isn't... cool. XD

  • You bet - thanks for checking out the vid! =)

  • @TimeFreeze1 Haha, that's cool, I'm Canadian, and I didn't notice anything.

  • it's nice to see your progression and the way you improve your game over time, keep up the great vids!

  • Thanks Clearerer!

  • black would have had your ass LMAO!!! nice vid man!

  • The opponent definitely failed to make some key moves, no question about it. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Great vid and Congrats on 101!

It's not just the milestone but the continuation afterward that counts. You keep pushing yourself and that gives us the motivation to push ourselves as well. Thank you for all you share with us, jrobi.

  • Thanks kr4m!

  • 7:06 e3 to c1 nothing big, but it does take care of not losing a pawn.

  • Almost saves the pawn - once black gets those rooks doubled though the pawn on D4 and A4 becomes weak and one will fall.

  • F1 to D1 :-)

  • and after that A4 A5

  • than it will most likely become a trade of pawns

  • and with some luck you could maybe also get the A file open threatening for checkmate

  • I would like for you to make another extended blitz video pls

  • I will be doing more of those for sure. Thanks for checking out this one!

  • usually opposite color bishop endgames are drawn, they are very hard to win...still nice draw after all the mistakes you pointed out. but thats the beauty of chess

  • Opposite colored Bs are usually drawn when there are no other pieces on the board. Since the Rs where there, that rule doesn't apply as much.

  • you are right, but since the rooks where so passive I guess thats why they agreed to the draw. also I think if they had kept on going I bet a trade of rooks would have happened, but still you are entirely correct

  • With Be3 you wanted to give black 2 Bs for 2 Ns in a worse endgame? He should have captured as you hoped and slowly started attacking your weak b and d pawns.

With his Bxc5?? your b-pawns now connect to your newly created passed c pawn. He should have played Bb5 instead of his previous b5? to double his Rs on the c-file. (Against Nc5 he should play b6.) Your 7th rank is weak, and his Rs on e2 and c2 would be very strong.

  • Instead of Rxh8 you had the opportunity to play Rh6, then you have plenty of time to play you K up and play Rah1 later.

  • Definitely playable. Black would have the resource of D4 after Rh6 but it would definitely change the dynamics of the position.

  • 3:46 Jrobi even though that you had doubled up pawns on the B file youhave the a and C files with preasure

  • Thanks for the video! It is a wonderful analysis of mistake after mistake but that's the way some games go!

I find that many of the games I win are simply that my opponent made more or worse mistakes.

You are a consummate and assiduous analyzer.

  • Great comment on the give and take of mistakes in the game - Kasparov once said something similar but the exact words aren't coming to mind right now.

  • Jrobi if you play at chessworld ( letsplaychess ) lets play a game, but plz you ask me because im not a member( yet )so i can't, my nick is Davidchessboy

  • wow I thought you lost the game straight away when you played 4. Qb3. The doubled pawns like you said, are a major flaw in your position and structure.

But very nice to draw the game! Obviously your quite good analysis during the game prevailed. :)

  • Yeah when I was looking back at that I was wondering what I could have been thinking because I saw no reason to do so. Live and learn! =)

  • I love pawn e5 on this opening. It can sometimes catch the inexperienced off-guard and provides some nifty end-game control.

  • It's the third most played move in the position, so it's definitely got some potential. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • To say That 3.Nc3 is much better than 3.e5 might be a bit of a stretch. If it is good enough for players like Hodgson and Shirov, then I think it is definitely fine for players at our level. Another good video. Thanks jrobi.

  • Good point, but i think he is referring solemnly to the statistical winning chances.

  • also what time control do you use in your standard games?

  • Ranges from 30 mins per player to 60.

  • when i calculate moves alot of times i find myself calculating for what i want my opponent to do rather than what he SHOULD do...

  • It's definitely a habit to kick, I did the same thing a lot when I first started looking at how I analyzed positions.

  • At 9:27 after he played rook h8 maybe just Rh6 from you wouldve been nice. If he takes, you take back with the pawn with check and have a dangerous pass pawn. So there wouldnt be much he could do to get the rook away from that square I think. Anyway interesting game with the positional analysis.

  • At 12:13, you could have played b3! After the bishop takes, play would go c6 Ba4

c7 Bd7 and you would have had a very strong passed pawn. Also, black would not be able to defend his b pawn without white promoting. Tell me what you think...

  • Yeah, that was exactly what I was thinking! Your opponent would have had no shot at defending Promotion. If he does not re-capture, however, you can simply put your Bshop to d2 gaining two Passed Pawns.

  • I dont know. He will be able to get his bishop back and defend C8 meanwhile his pawn at b4 would be free to walk down and jrobi would have to defend by moving his bishop to d4. The game wouldn't have progressed that much - the bishops would just have gotten a role of babysitting the remaining passing squares.

  • well black doesn't have to take the pawn and then the pawn would be on a light square and would be a target for the bishop for exp. b3 bb5, then some king move and then Bd3 with the idea of bc2 and the pawn can't be defended

  • Very instructive, thanks.

I think that was good to work a draw out of a position you could have lost.

  • Thanks upanddown1001!

  • your great even when u werent

  • Thanks Alien - good or bad moving forward the vids are gonna come - hopefully more good than bad though! =)

  • What rating are you now?

  • I am going to default to "last vid posted" because after the next 2 vids I will be back to a direct relation to the current rating, and from there it will go up and down along with the vids.

Those next ones should be coming soon (I am shooting for this week). Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Would you say early queens = messy/crazy/slow games?

  • That's probably not far from the truth. Some openings (Scandinavian, etc) have an early use of the queen but only because it can work and be supported in those lines.

Developing my queen and offering the trade in this position wasn't very good as I go over. Thanks for checking out the vid!

  • Once the queens are off, the game usually becomes positional, the more pawns are on the board.

  • Yeah, with queens off the board, the chance of a quick or surprise checkmate is much lower, so both positional play and material advantages are much more important. If have a material or positional advantage, I usually try to trade off the queens at my first opportunity (unless my queen is part of my positional advantage, of course).

  • White has the natural advantage of first move and initiative. In the French opening (which this game entered into) that usually translates to a space advantage, which means white's Q should cover more squares than the black queen on average. Trading Qs just removes this as part of white's intrinsic advantage.

In this game it was even worse, since the doubled b-pawns and isolated d-pawn should have been enough for black to win the endgame.

  • Totally agree - trading the queens definitely hurt the overall position, and those doubled pawns were a mess.
