I rode this horse. Gunner. Very delightful horse. His slides were amazing, right now, he is still working on flying changes to get them the time asked since he hasn't done a show in a few months.
The splash overo gene is inherited commonly with the gene for hearing because the loci are located very close on the same chromosome. Gunner does happen to be deaf and a lot of his offspring are as well.
It certainly does not stop him from being an incredible horse though thats for sure
@barrelsnpleasure That is definatly not true. Deafness is very rare in horses. And even then, only horses with white over the ears would be deaf, just like dogs. As you can see, his ears are not while. On a seperate note, Does anyone know if he's overo or splashed? Im thinking splashed butthen i see the white patch on his side =)
@SelmerLibertyOwner: Deafness is not rare in horses. I know 5 horses right now with the same pie bald markings as him that are deaf. Now this is not complete deafness but they do not hear as well as a normal horse would. As for the white over the ears, I have never met a horse with a reverse medicine hat that was deaf or partialy deaf. As for his markings - he is overo - legs and face signafy for that.
@barrelsnpleasure No, he is actually splashed. Overo means there is white on the belly. He has no white on the belly. Look on the APHA website, it explains a lot about the different types of pinto colors. As for deafness, if the horse were a Paint with white ears, there is a chance he may be deaf. Since Gunners ears are not white, why would he be deaf?
I would like to know if this horse is out of "Colonels Smoking Gun", owned by Tim McQuay. Looks like an offspring. Anyway, very nicely done by both horse and rider. Very smooth and fluid.
The biggest thing I don't like about western riding is very easy to see in this video. The riders have little to no contact to the horse with the reigns. When he's got the horse at a hand gallop at times his hand is way up by the horses head. Now, it's great that he can communicate with the horse without the use of reigns. A lot of western riders are great horseman, but some aren't. Here what I see is a good rider and horse pair, just not my style or choice of riding. Beautiful horse!
@FueledByDeisel In reining, a hand up by the horses head is just for show, its not part of overall western riding. Also, i think contact with a horses mouth shouldnt be needed if your horse is well trained. Contact hardens the horses mouth. These horses are guided by the reins on their neck. Its just different style than english, thats all. It is a beautiful horse, isnt it? :)
In reining, the further the hand goes up the horses head ques him to pick up a faster pace in his gallop (canter). And I think all riding styles have their own beauty and elegance. Although, when you get right down to the training, all should have the same techniques of training.
@rhdwright yes it can, because the horse learns to relate it with going fast, but some people dont do it. You dont need your hand up there to cue the horse to pick up speed you can just click and squeeze. It just displays a showier and "look of speed" for the judges. Shawn Flarida himself said this.
@FueledByDeisel Actually this particaular type of riding is called neck reining. It stays out of the horses neck and makes a very small movement so it may seem like the rider has no contact but actually he has as much contact with the horse as it he were in the horses mouth. Also there's things called leg signals. Keft thigh into horse, he turns left, right, you see what im getting at, it's a diffrent communication thatn in the horses mouth.
@Haileyandbuddy Oh yes, I know about neck reining. We have a mare that ONLY neck reins. She doesn't understand what your asking of her if you don't neck rein her. I understand that there is a different connection between the horse and rider in this style of riding. I'm not against it or anything I am just not a fan of that style of riding. It feels and looks weird to me. :)
This horse is very nice. I love the relationship between the horse and rider, weather the horse is deaf or not they ares till a good team. It seems to me the horse is doing what xSilverUnicorn said and asking his rider what is wanted out of him next.
I myself have ridden both western and english but I primarily ride english now. It's easier for me to feel the horse under me and what it's doing with it's body when I'm in an english saddle.
The deafness is caused by the splashed white gene. This happens when the inner ear is depigmented melanocytes (cells responsible for creating melanin) are missing causing the death of the hair cells.
What a cutie. Stops are nice, rollbacks good, spins brilliant. I would like to see him plant his foot a little more on the spin (he picked it up a few times and moved) but overrall I am impressed. Nice to see some color in the reining arena ;)
I don't think he's fidgety. He's just looking at who's on his back. The way he does it makes me think that he's an affectionate, curious horse. It's almost as though he's saying, "You doing okay up there?"
@quarterhorseluver die Quarter-Stute, die ich reite, macht das auch immer (: und eigentlich find ich es ganz niedlich. ich denk nicht, dass der Paint aus diesem Video irgendwie aufgekratzt oder ähnliches ist. "You doing okay up there" trifft es wohl am Besten ;)!
There's a rumor that this horse may be deaf. Most horses twitch their ears back to listen to their riders, to give them their undivided attention as a sign of respect. If this horse can't hear, it could be that he's looking at his rider instead. It's his own way of saying "OK buddy, what do you want me to do next?"
K i was watching this same video and someone actually said that reining was cruel. I couldn't believe it!!! Anyhow I was trying to find it again so I could respond. My horses love doing their work
reining is western dressage, reining is more humane then dressage, i have an old dressage horse and my closest friend is a reiner and they own MorningStar Performance horses her mom is Nadine Galbraith
The owners of these deaf studs don't want to advertise this, because then, obviously they wouldn't get as many breedings for fear of getting an expensive foal who is deaf....isn't Gunner's breeding fee like $10,000 now? thats a lot for a potentially deaf foal, dont u think?
deafness isnt traced back to only gunner, even Like a Diamond foals with bald faces can be deaf. Its the color gene that causes it, but can be inherited. :( Gunner horses are laid back which is why they aren't phased by being deaf.
Mosty overo paints with bald faces can be deaf. Not just "this stud's" foals. In fact a lot of paint reiners are deaf, like Spooks Gota Gun for example.
They come out deaf if there is white over their eyes...there is one of his 2 year olds at my barn in training. EXCELLENT horse. Being deaf doesn't stop that horse. He's a machine.
there is a field of belief that it is the splashed white gene (the color pattern that he is) that can cause deafness in horses but i myself do not believe that. I think that it is just bred from sire to foal - just a coincidence that he happens to be a splashed white......
I just read in magazine that he is a 100%Quarter but for too much white couldn't be registered with AQHA for a long time. A lot of people don't know that he is deaf. I love the way he looks around and then he says "yes I'm ready". It is amazing horse. What a story behind this horse........love him.
Wow!!!!!!! I could watch this again and again. Totally awesome. Your hard work has paid off and congrads!!! Lol! He has great color and I love his pants. (the horses pants)
