the build up and the ultimate climax to this track is truly awe inspiring. Fills your heart with total freedom and joy. I love the sound of the harp and the keyboard at the end. It really captures the feeling of total joy and achievement that you see Andy experience as he stands trimphant, arms outstretched in the stormy night. The night He finally broke free. Beautiful. Just beautiful.
I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still to hold a thought in my head. I think it's the sort of excitement a free man (Freeman) feels on the start of a long journey, whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope to make it across the border safely. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.
Yep, agreed. From the moment this tune began until the end of the movie was for me not only the greatest story of redemption and justice, but it was depicted, edited and acted so perfectly as to be compared to the greatest works of art in mankind's history. I would put the last part of this movie (as a piece of art) up there with anything done by Michael Angelo. This is movie making that is to be aspired to by all filmmakers. It is my opinion it is the best movie ever made.
The image of Andy crawling out of that pipe, across the stream, and splaying his arms out in the rain (with this score behind it) will forever be branded in my memory. Now THAT is something not every movie can do.

the moment when andy dufresne took the rope and stared at the poster, this melody playing, was the moment where this motion picture became my alltime favorite...
I can hear this is so many different other tracks eg apparition by jon hopkins. maybe it's because i listen to it too much but nevertheless i cant help but think a lot of other artists were inspired by this..such a great piece
I truly enjoy the part 3:40 till the end, it's also the part of the movie that gives me just a sense of high like no other. I can just hear Morgan Freeman narrating, "The next morning, right about the, time Racquel was spilling her little secrets, a man nobody ever laid eyes on before strolled into the Casco Bank of Portland. Until that moment, he didn't exist -- except on paper."
Not sure if the the OP was listing other films with good scores or other Thomas Newman scores. Hopefully it was the former because not all of the films listed were scored by Newman
@locutys No no no, i was saying there are good movies after shawshank redemption. if you seen this comment "they should have stopped making movies after shawshank was released. it's just perfect".
I must admit I didn't think much of Andy first time I laid eyes on him; looked like a stiff breeze would blow him over. That was my first impression of the man.
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, The Truman Show. Blue Valentine, Se7en, Narc, The Departed, Good Will Hunting, Fight Club, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Rescue Dawn, Catch Me if you can, Heat, District 9, Insomnia, The Hurt Locker, No Country for old men, The Wrestler, Shaun of the dead, Up, 28 days later, Let the right one in, Inception, 127 hours were all GREAT movies after Shawshank redemption. I am sure i am missing A LOT more
@PunisherSoundtrack I agree with Truman Show (ridiculously incredible movie. also a personal favorite of mine because jim carrey is my favorite actor), Good will hunting, District 9, and Inception. I would add to that Star Trek (2009), Transformers 1, Tron, and a bunch of others.
@PunisherSoundtrack yeah i've seen it. Truman Show is leagues ahead in my book though because the film is just special for me. it's just... epic beyond words. but eternal sunshine was good too.
"For the second time in my life, im guilty of committing a crime.. a role violation." -Red
Swaping roles is key to solitude and Im glad that even a convict can break loose like Red did. Please people! Tsotsi is another movie you´ll love. Slightly rough, but it´ll wet your eyes in the end. ;)
You'll feel a lump in your throat when he walks in the rain, throws away his shirt and stands with his arms wide open. It is because you know that he deserves that freedom.
I love the way the music starts off quiet and sad displaying Andy's despair and hopelessness in his life, but then the intensity of the music increases into a more thunderous and demanding tone. To me it represents Andy's hope in the midst of that despair, because he held on to hope his light could shine through the darkness, he would find his freedom. Some birds aren't meant to be caged and the music so triumphly captures that feeling as Andy is standing in the rain, his spirit had triumphed.
Am I getting old? I'm only 18 and I love all types of music but this is amazing. Really relaxing and it just feels so emphatic. Ahhh maybe I am just mature? :)
@thatguystefan It doesn't matter now old you are you just need to be someone who can tell what real music is and and that certain so called musics like that soulja boy crap is a poison to society.
@thatguystefan your never too young or old to listen to an amazing song im 18 aswell and i enjoy all genre's of music and films :) its good to be so flexible gives you a good taste of the world of music and films xD
@thatguystefan I think it's because the music means something in the movie. If you heard this music without knowing the scene in the film, it's be a really good piece of music, but in the film this is the theme representative of justice, freedom, redemption. Something the character had to wait for 25 years. Something he had to scratch out of rock for. Something he was willing to die for and would not be denied. It's those things encapsulated in the score that make it potent.
I could see why some of the boys took him for snobby. He had a quiet way about him, a walk and a talk that just wasn't normal around here. He strolled, like a man in a park without a care or a worry in the world, like he had on an invisible coat that would shield him from this place. Yeah, I think it would be fair to say... I liked Andy from the start.
inception is very special cuz of the ideas of christopher nolan the things he thought off were very original and u enjoy watching it.. not to mention the effects and the story of the movie are just great.... this movie is very good also, considering that its so old... but the story its self is nothing special
@foxysham Naw man, than an even greater movie wouldnt have been made.....American Beauty, yes shawshank is one of the greatest but American Beauty is one of the greatest also.
This orchestrated piece is like a woman you've begun to fall in love with. Frightening to the sense, yet you are unable to let the mere thought go or erase it entirely from your mind if only to turn away slighly for one moment. It's compelling beauty beyond reason, it's loveliness without fault!
"Andy crawled to freedom through 500 yards of shit-smelling foulness I can't even imagine. Or maybe I just don't want to. 500 yards, that's the length of five football fields. Just shy up half a mile..."
I love how the suspension keeps getting tighter and tighter. Through this you can imagine how Andy felt seeing the end of that tunnel, and it's such a great feeling.
@BlitzinLB27 "Andy crawled to freedom through 500 yards of shit smelling foulness that I can't even imagine...or maybe I just don't want to. 500 yards...that's the length of 3 football fields...just shy of half a mile..."
Every time I hear it, the hair on my arms stand on end, I feel like I am dreaming, I feel like my heart is going to scream and my mind swells with a strange proud feeling.
Amazing cue, and tremendous soundtrack. Newman went above and beyond composing this one.
