damnit stockton, ur too nice, stop thanking ppl xD
so much respect for him, he wasnt the best player in his team, but he definitely was the best player to play his position, imo. and that in itself is much greater.
So because of a speech a man is perfect, classy? AH. Look into Stockton and Malone 's lives, a lot of dirt, especially Malone. Speech= classy? ha. Nobody is perfect, period.
Stockton proves his place in the HoF. Stockton is what a true role model should be like for kids to look up to. MJ: great player, perhaps GOAT, but a role model on AND off the court? Nope, sorry he is NOT. And I don't mean to undermine all the good deeds done by MJ like different charities and things of that nature. But Stockton is just a good old family man who doesn't need big charity events to provide examples on how to be a great player/person.
I miss this man and his short shorts. John Stockton is more than just a hall of famer basketball player, he is a hall of famer in life. We will always remember you John!
Jerry Sloan trying to hold back tears at 1:15. mmm... How rare it is to see a relationship like this in the NBA, where money talks. But if you know the story of Sloan and Stockton, you shouldn't be surprised. When Stockton was drafted by Sloan and the Jazz, he was booed by Jazz fans as the 16th pick. But Sloan believed in him to work his ass off to get better. He had a hunch, you could say. By age 25, Stockton finally had a starting position on the Jazz and went on to dish out 15000 assists
@FlipSide693 hahahahahaha fuck you, you pussy shit ass of a shit fuck!!! your the one who is retarded. what proof do you have that I had anything related to homosexuality that i said or anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/????? your a fucking dumbass. your retarded. thats all you can say to me???? hahaha your pathetic and god knows it.go suck an egg gayass

@SuperBlaze46 dude, he has the most total assists in nba history, led his team to the finals, and now hes in the hall of fame. i dont think a fucking pussy piece of shit with no intelligence would do all that
@californicator It's not spiteful venom man, it's called trash talking. And the people he trash talked to during his speech, they know him and he knows them. And trash talking is a tradition between them, so for them, it's normal. For you it might not be, but for them it is. See it through their eyes and not yours. Trash talking is a basketball tradition for decades, and when you do it, you still respect the other. That's a reality that many people today can't understand, and I don't blame ya.
@californicator how could yhu make a "classless" comment like that........i mean come on these are people that played in the league together for like over 13 years......they were sort of like family so to speak.......and they aint talkin to each other inna way that i wouldnt talk to my brothers
ok stockton was one of my fav players but if any of you people actually watched basketball in the 90s you'd know he was one of the dirtiest players in nba history haha. hes like the definition of "moving screen" and he always loved to throw a hard elbow but thats what i loved about him haha
I have a sense, somewhat strange... Jordan's speech sounded a bit sad comparing to this. Michael spoke of his rivals, of his achievements... but Stockton had his mouth full of people who love him, his wonderful family, etc.
the most underrated player to EVER play the game of basketball if you ask me. played for 19 years (1 less than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar & 2nd most all time)
@greatland2 I would have to agree. Grace, intelligence, intellect, pure greatness. Today, I would single out Steve Nash as one example. Not many more though.
@radiolaugh I don't mean to advocate for him; however, I think what he means is that the game of basketball is going through much change, that is, the personality and physicality of the game, now. Back then, to be a basketball player it was much more than to just be the biggest baddest player. In short, one had to have a certain kind of discipline and integrity before even stepping on the court. Now, a single trait could get you your ticket to the Nba. I could be wrong.
@Pillage4Pleasure i get what you mean but to be honest people say shit like that all the time....todays players arent as good as before....the leauge is weaker.....todays plaeyrs cant shoot.....todays players dont play the ball the right way...i mean maybe to some extent that is true....but players were good back then...and players are good now then well ground
@radiolaugh I agree with you, it could be seen as a somewhat prejudice comment, maybe a tinge of ignorance even but I say don't take it too heart. Anyhow he could have been drunk or something not that I am saying that he was when he made that comment but something could have distorted him to say so. I wouldn't consider it a bad thing to say entirely although it kinda mean that the basketball stars can't level up in terms of class.
i think jordan's speech offered something that we've never really seen as fans-- his thoughts, his motivation, and to a certain extent, his ego... he had a big ego, but he backed it up and did big things... ego can hurt a person or help a person b/c it is a balance of pride and insecurity, and everyone has it, but not everyone can channel ego the way a jordan does, the way a kobe does, they turn the ego into a swagger and confidence that i think a lot of people will never accept or appreciate.
@mrcioffi33 judging by Jordan and Kobe's actions and words though I believe that they have allowed theirs to go too far. I can fully understand as an athlete myself that swagger that you get when you are the best around, but you need to keep it in check imo. Stockton could have been arrogant and a show off like Rondo is now (and even more so because he's the top 3 best PG ever!), but he was humble and kept it as self-confidence and not arrogance. That's the true way to carry yourself.
I think people are mad about Michael Jordan's speech because it was very self-centered. Notice how Stockton rarely talked about himself during this speech, but talked about all the people who supported and helped him, and thanked them all.
Superior person and player. His attributes were is unusually huge hands and feet which gave him the control and allowed to him to play bigger than he was.
Maybe the toughest guy ever in the NBA (and hes small n scronny). Also extremely clutch and great shooter. Stockton is the best Tru PG in the history of the NBA.
A classy guy. I have always loved Stockton. Great player and one of the toughest players ever in the NBA. Jordans speech was classless. He needs to not be so arrogant.
This guys kids are going to flourish in anything that they do in life, you can see that John holds no bar for them to measure to himself. Bravo John! What a great father as well as ambassador to the game your are. You and the Admiral are what the game will be missing for years to come. Thank you for the memories.
Great Speech, and why are people hating on Jordan - time and time again throughout his life people have doubted him, on the high school level, college, and multiple times in the NBA and yet he's the only guy time and time again to prove people wrong by a long shot, and he resents it and relishes in showing his competition up, which he has a right to do, his critics put him in that position.
What a speech man.. this was the best speech of the night, just pure class. I just wish David Robinson would have mentioned pop, his speech was way up there too. Jordan.. what can i say about him.. he should let things go.
John played the position the way it was supposed to be played, and likely the way it will never be played again in this ME ME ME NBA. He could have made more money, guaranteed himself a ring just by switching teams because EVERYONE knew the Jazz was just Stockton/Malone and if you could weather them, the rest of the guys on the floor couldn't beat you. When you watched him in an All-Star game or the Olympics you saw just how great he was with quality talent around him. Class act indeed
What a class act! And, he's still doing his thing - making everyone else around him (feel and seem) important and better, just like he did on the court.
As great as Karl Malone was, I'd venture to see that Stockton was their best player.
I don't know why everyones crying about Jordan's speech, dude was being sarcastic and teasing about Byron. People should realize the guy was just trying to make the crowd laugh. If any of you guys can relate, you'd know he wasn't trying to attack him or being a "dick"
People say Michael Jordan was the best, but what determines the best is whether that person makes those around him better than they really are. Bryon Russell, Greg Ostertag, Tyrone Corbin, Blue Edwards, Greg Foster, etc... all of these guys were average at best. But, Stockton made them better because he was so good. Then when those players left the team, they weren't even half as productive as they were with Stockton. That to me makes Stockton a better player than Michael Jordan.
Michael was an arrogance prideful ass from beginning to end. Stockton, Robinson, and Sloan gave excellent speeches. I always knew Jordan was a dick, but I would have thought by age 46 he would have grown out of being a dick. Guess not.
Thanks so much for getting this on video. Channel 2 in Salt Lake was planning to show a special last night that I set to record and the tennis match superceded it, I called them and they said they would not rerun it although it NEVER ran! I'll never ever watch that station again!
Such a good guy. Somebody all NBA players should aspire to and is lacked too much today

John Stockton, what a class act! Amazing!
chamomileandhoney 2 years ago 3
What a class act! And, he's still doing his thing - making everyone else around him (feel and seem) important and better, just like he did on the court.
As great as Karl Malone was, I'd venture to see that Stockton was their best player.

gotta love this classy guy! Great speech!

1. John Stockton 15,806 2. Mark Jackson 10,334 3. Jason Kidd 10,199 4. Magic Johnson 10,141
Jeez, only 5,000 more assists than anybody else that played in the NBA. Not bad!
UncleWillis 2 years ago 3
And hes only a few points short of 20,000 he looks like he can still play so he should come back!
No one will ever have 15,000 assist. Maybe if Jason Kid plays 5 more years.

Stockton was big part of life as a kid. He play the game the right way. Never flashly but always the right way i still miss him on the court today.

Does anyone else find it ironic that he named one of his sons Houston?
angelbeta 2 years ago
houston is john stockton's middle name...so thats prolly why he named one of his kid's houston.

I don't know why everyones crying about Jordan's speech, dude was being sarcastic and teasing about Byron. People should realize the guy was just trying to make the crowd laugh. If any of you guys can relate, you'd know he wasn't trying to attack him or being a "dick"
itsmejamiechan 2 years ago
People say Michael Jordan was the best, but what determines the best is whether that person makes those around him better than they really are. Bryon Russell, Greg Ostertag, Tyrone Corbin, Blue Edwards, Greg Foster, etc... all of these guys were average at best. But, Stockton made them better because he was so good. Then when those players left the team, they weren't even half as productive as they were with Stockton. That to me makes Stockton a better player than Michael Jordan.

Come on man that is hilarious. I am big Stockton fan but this is just to much.
frank9007 2 years ago
Now THAT'S how you make a speech, Michael. We all know you were the best Mike, my fave athlete ever, but you don't have to be a dick about it.
Stockton, all-time leader and assists and steals. Unbelievable! Good guy.
sabrejack 2 years ago 7
Michael was an arrogance prideful ass from beginning to end. Stockton, Robinson, and Sloan gave excellent speeches. I always knew Jordan was a dick, but I would have thought by age 46 he would have grown out of being a dick. Guess not.

That dude has 5000 more assists than the next guy, which happens to be Magic Johnson.

Stockton's greatest assist. Next year when he presents Malone.

Thanks so much for getting this on video. Channel 2 in Salt Lake was planning to show a special last night that I set to record and the tennis match superceded it, I called them and they said they would not rerun it although it NEVER ran! I'll never ever watch that station again!
