Thanks for this...It is one of the best storylines from OT. The scariest part at the end when the alien is stepping on his fingers so he will fall in the river....
This from Wiki: "Arena" is a science fiction short story by Fredric Brown that was first published in the June 1944 issue of Astounding magazine.
The Star Trek episode "Arena" had some similarity to this story, so to avoid legal problems, it was agreed that Brown would receive a story credit. An Outer Limits episode, "Fun and Games", also has a similar plot.
@BoilingPoint212F Roddenberry hung around the Outer Limits set. He hired several of the production team for "Star Trek", and modified assorted monster suits for his show. A lot of the actors from OT turned up on Star Trek. (Of course, they did other shows including "The Fugitive" before Roddenberry got them. There's even an episode of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." with Nimoy and Shatner.)
Didn't Nick Adams die at a young age because he was a drug addict?

@SirReal1958 He died under mysterious circumstamces... but they are not really sure! Some speculate that drugs may have played a part.

Gene Roddenberry must have gotten the idea for Star Trek TOS episode "Arena" from this episode.

This episode is one of my top three favorites from this classic series. I love the way the Alien speaks at them.
