Damn, looks like a little of that snow is blowing back into the track, behind them. That's some hard snow. You could likely drive a small car on that stuff.
The evidence of how deeply ingrained the nanny state is in the comments here is truely disturbing. So is the utter lack of basic engineering knowledge.
Do like most of these armchair CEO's want it done and you would be broke down all the time. I would think that this would be a project better suited for guys that know how to do the job right. Some things you just have to finesse...OF COURSE you do not know that because you do not, or are not; capable of working for a living...YET...
@VegasRedneck1 It's not that it's going to leap forward, it's that they could get stuck in the drift and the crew can't see them. Clearly an OSHA/FRA violation to be running back and forth that close in front of the train. Clearly no reason to do what they're doing.
Slow going not just because of the snow depth but also because of the density. Drifts pack because of the little bit of heat created by the friction of the blowing snow. Love that "black sun" effect at 09:02.
LOL, i agree who the hell cares what it is called whats the diff, it is still cool but i would say it is doing some hell of SNOW BLOWING what does everyone else think, haha.
dany080, well, DUH DUH!!!! U see w/yr 4 eyes high the snow is, dany?? It figures he would tackle it a little a time. !! Here is sheepdkin from DUH school!!!
@dany080 yes, dont have any experience with this type of snow removal...but I do snow service for CP...with a converted ballast regulator( snow fighter) Im assuming if you hit it head on,full throttle...something would break...I imagine it's like ice too.
@dany080 Not only that, you can only feed whatever chute it ejects from,a certain amount..and depending on what kind of snow it is...feed it too much, and you plug it up....not fun to unclog on a snowfighter, can imagine it would suck big time on such a big blower.
@55chh From the point of view of someone who lives only miles from here, I'd guess that they're shooting it south (based on the sun's angle) because the prevailing winds this time of year are out of the north, and they know that even though at the time of this video the wind was out of the south, it will eventually be much stronger out of the north. At 7:50 you can see that BNSF had already been through once and don't want any more loose snow on the prevailing up-wind side than necessary.
I would imagine that the operator has the ability to steer the output from one side to the other. Why is is he throwing the snow upwind here? Seems like a lot is going the blow back onto the tracks behind the unit.
@adrianspeeder That answer indicates you've blowing something else. Railroads use Rotary snow plows. They are very different in operation and mechanical design.
This machine works like a charm. We chose it for the 4 year warranty. We see now that it's a very capable machine and perfect for an old-fashioned Minnesota blizzard. It took less than 5 minutes to assemble and can be used even by someone with severe back and neck limitations. Highly recommended!!
Same technique i used to use with our 2Km driveway that filled up with 4 feet of snow every day in the winter lol. For a while before my dad bought a tractor we only had a little push blower, this is the same technique i used on those dense hard packs, break a bit up, let the blower clear the snow out, and ram it again.
@Treehugger22293 Because it's an amazing machine built by man. A marvel of engineering. So now I ask you dirty smelly no shower hippie, What is the point of sticking your finger in your ass????
@BourneAccident They're clearing a high priority class I railroad that needs to be cleared as fast as possible. Maybe hard physical labor is okay when you're clearing your driveway or something that doesn't frequently see heavy freight trains that don't have time to wait for track workers to clear it.
@foroke1 High Priority pass? I am no diesel engine mechanic, but that thing sounds like it is a bucket of bolts ready to blow apart. I would be looking for a lot better unit if this is the case of needing to be cleared immediately. Waste of time and money other wise.
This is very interesting, Pulsing forward so as not to stall the rotary and plug it up. I always thought they just kept the pressure on the point, and cleared the main this way. If it had not been so deep a constant "rooster tail" would be seen. Nice Catch Buddy !! Where was this ? The Aurora.- Galesburg main near Bristol?
Those guys are standing on a snow drift that's more than ass-deep and they're not sinking into it. That usually means subzero seriously stinkin' cold snowfall for it to pack that hard. Plus some high winds of course.
@TheRantingCabbie come to the nothern plains states 60mph plus winds and -32 without windchill or yeah snow drifts get hard, that tree break is also the reason it packed in @:55 you can see a field with no snow cover so it acts like a snow fence only against the railroad
@clothingonly Aurora, Nebraska it is just a snow drift if you look at the field next to it you can see that there is not much snow. Looks like the wind blew the snow off the fields and the trees caught it. No different than a big pile of snow you see in a mall parking lot.
