  • Thanks to so many perverts misusing this app, the program now thinks there is a penis leaf.]

Keep in on Chat roulette you freaks.

  • She's a pretty girl, that said it would be nice to see an Android version sometime soon :) I wish I could have been a part of the development team lol.

  • No more wiping with poison ivy !!!!!

  • This app does NOT work. Don't get ittt

  • @ilovejaway @uggles2 ok thats obvious that picking one leaf off a tree isnt going to harm it, but what happens when a bus load of kids come along one day and they each do it, then the same thing the next day? and repeat .how long before the tree runs out of leafs?

  • you still need a book while walking

  • damn... iPhone users don't hike in the woods sillypants, they use the subway. You should have made this for Android, since it has more users :)

  • Hoping this expands to Canada, I'm sure UofG can help with that!

  • As a botanist, and certified arborist and tree risk assessor, I can say that removing a single leaf, or even many leaves from a tree will not harm the tree in any way. Up to 25% of the photosynthesising parts of a tree can be removed without permanent damage to the organism. We responsibly collect whole branches of flowers, fruit, and LEAVES from many trees for identification and for herbarium specimens. I would even go so far as to encourage kids to pull leaves off trees; touch nature.

  • All of you worried about pulling a leaf from the tree should wait until fall when all of them fall off. Oh the horror!

  • Need this on my HTC phone

I would upload some dutch leaves. Is it also possible to see if a plant is edible or poisonous?

  • @benchokwaiman that would be a nice feature being able to determine whether a plant is edible or poisnous if you are someone who goes on hikes and stuff in the forest and need to survive on leaves only.

  • this is fucking youtube, i dont give shit about spelling. you were clearly capable enough to read that comment that wasnt in essay form. and please realize that you had no argument in the first place. "It does make a difference, symbolically and practically" that is not an argument and i completely disproved you. which is why you got defensive brought up my spelling for some reason.. please explain to me why pulling a leaf makes any difference, and try your best not to cry

  • i really can't see this causing defoliation problems. every day things like wind take lots of leaves off trees.

i am a pretty big tree fan myself so i got all excited when i was downloading this app today. i tested it on trees i already know, the results varied wildly! the results depend a lot on how you have the leaf angled in the photo. so i'm not sure this will really help anyone, especially if they really have no idea what tree they are looking at.

    it is free though.

  • can´t wait for the android app! i would pay for it...

  • You don't have to take the leaves off the trees to snap and image. Just hold a piece of paper behind the leaf while it's still attached. The app isn't working for us yet. I downloaded the newest version today, May 15, 2011. It crashes whenever we snap an picture of one of the leaves in our yard and try to upload. I hope they get the bugs out soon. Have an environmental studies workshop in June.

  • waaah! pls release android version. but no fancy facebook/share/comment stuff. make it light and sweet :)

  • This is very cool but when I search for the app, it say no matches available! I can't wait to try this!

  • Absolutely brilliant app, good useabilty, because it has one of the best interfaces I've seen.

  • Grab ahold of all those poison oak and poison ivy leaves friends!

  • I love your app. But...

You say to "grab a leaf", and show someone yanking one off a tree.

This is bullshit. *Thumbs up if you agree, please.*

It does make a difference, symbolically and practically. Millions of school kids have learned in environmental ed _not_ to pull leaves off plants for a fricking reason.

Would you re-do this video. Show your app used without killing photosynthesizing parts of living trees "for science".

    Please.

    Isn't this obvious?

I feel like the Lorax ;)

  • @Yowzoe, I really can't see this causing mass defoliations! what I can se it doing is making identification more accessable. Making it easier for students and children to learn more about the trees they see every day. I think the method of 'grab a leaf and snap it' is fantastic. Identification is always seen as a boring and somwhat laborious task. If this makes it fun, and leaves kids more clued up about their natural enviroment then why not?

  • @markpaulhedley Whatever effect there is does not have to happen. While it won't cause mass defoliations, it does not help a plant to have leaves snapped--and wide adoption of this wonderful app could have some effect. But that's not the main point.

In education, you try to model respect for living things, including plants. This should extend to grow-ups, particularly those trying to advance science. The Smithsonian should know this well.

  • @markpaulhedley As another commenter says, "You don't have to take the leaves off the trees to snap and image. Just hold a piece of paper behind the leaf while it's still attached". Please tell me why Leafsnap cannot promote this method, which although it is slightly more work, will achieve the same result.

When "easy" and "fun" collide with doing the right thing, kids (and adults) need to be encouraged to make slightly more effort. It's done all the time in real field work.

  • @Yowzoe you clearly have no background in biology whatsoever. no picking off one leaf of a tree will not do it any harm in the slightest. it would be a major evolutionary disadvantage if such an insignificant change had any sort of effect on a tree. im not sure if you realized this, but leaves grow back dipshit.there are many cases where cutting branches off a tree is beneficial for it. delete your comment, so weak minded people dont hold back on learning science with this app

  • @ugly2 Where should I start. You know what? You're not worth it. You clearly have no background in spelling or syntax, and seem incapable of absorbing the reasoned argument I've laid out in the comments above (since you are not responding to what I wrote).

Additionally, your language tells the world that you are obviously either a a 16 year-old, or a grade-A asshole. If you are the latter, take some leaves (poison oak would be good) and stick it up your ass, jerk.

  • I still say not to pick off the leaf if you can make a photo by avoiding it. This is a principle, it's not about if the tree can survive it or not. Don't change it if you don't have to.

  • Wow! Free. Hope you plan on and Android version soon. I could use this.

  • That sounds really neat! I hope you'll introduce an Android app as well so that I can use it.

  • Great, now assholes are going to be yanking leaves off trees left & right...

    WAY TO GO!!

  • @YooBoob One leaf? There is a such thing as stupid green.
