STILL TOUCHING - STILL CAN MORE YOU TO TEARS - AND JUST AS TRUE TODAY AS IT WAS YEARS AGO - A TRUE CLASSY CLASSIC - NO ONE SINGS IT BETTER THAN JANIS - YOU HAVE TO HAVE LIVED THIS SONG.
@robfolcroft i saw one with just her on an little black acoustic i saw on bbc2 in the 80s wish i still had it on vcr havnt seen it anywere else.but they do exist somewere.
I was a teenager when I first heard this song, and could very much relate to the pain that these lyrics express.......there was a lot of angst back then about physical appearance, and I don't see to this day, that there is any less angst about appearance...........this is a wonderful classic song, melodic and with lyrics that express great pain during a time in life........I find it's meaning "timeless"
Wow! The rhythm of this music is "Bossa-nova". Beautiful!
This is an american music with airs of brazilian music! Very good. I'm a brazilian woman. And I like very much of the americans songs, but if one song is made with brazilian rhythm, I stay very happy!
Janis Ian... Your voice, your song are more important that your face! If her was pretty or not, wich importance this have for your art? The talent of Janis Ian is all of we need, when we wish only a beautiful song! She is a wonderful artist! And this is all! Please!...
I don't understand... she's actually pretty. If she'd just flat ironed her hair and slapped on a little makeup, she'd probably have had a less crappy experience in high school. Just for the record, I think that everyone is beautiful as she is, and that all people are beautiful for what's inside them moreso than what's outside them, but still... I feel like it didn't have to be that way for her. And regardless, her talent is wonderful! Thanks for the post.
@mdavenrow you must've been a very obnoxious air head in your youth...I just hope that I don't turn out like you in my little youth i have left. If you actually listened to the words you can feel the struggle of arrogance with those she grew up with. Thanks for being a prick about her appearance. She need not flat iron, for her raidance is brilliant. Read that, BRILLIANT. Be gone, you have no power here!
@mdavenrow I strongly disagree...You might have the opinion that all people are beautiful for whats inside of them, but the fact is that a lot of teenagers are very cruel to their peers and usually only judge according to the outward appearance. A girl might be considered pretty by many, but will still be ignored and laughed at because she does not look like some celebrity or a popular girl in the school. I speak as a high school student, and I know exactly what its like.
@mdavenrow Straightening irons were not widely available in the late 1960's when Janis Ian was a teenager - although girls did use clothing irons on their hair. Why do you think she should have to have straight hair? Her curls are beautiful. You miss the point of what true beauty is entirely.
This is the best performance of this song I've seen on youtube. There is one that is as good or better: her appearance on the first episode of Saturday Night Live. If you can watch it with a tear you are tougher than I. Absolutely cathartic.
THis song brings back memories, some bad, some good...but all in all for girls like me it was a reminder that we were not alone...What a beautiful song sang by a beautiful Artist...
even now, 34yrs later, i was 17 when that song came out. bad acne, skinny, lots of hair. it still hurts, now. i have class, look a lot better. but still that ugly girl at 17
Haven't heard this song for so many years, and hearing it now touches me as deeply as when i was seventeen - too many decades ago!!! Lovely words, lovely voice,
The one video (of many I've viewed tonight) whose visuals do not detract from the essence of the song. This is artfully and sensitively created. Thank you!
A masterpiece, beautiful in its saddness and truth, timeless and that's just the song....Janice is the real treasure.

Now I haven't checked but unless she was a small child when she sang "society's child" in the early 60's I do believe she is well beyond 17 here.

I think this song would have a better effect with just her and the acoustic guitar. Would've liked to hear that. She sings effortlessly too.

@mdavenrow I'm glad she didn't try to conform. We probably wouldn't have the same great music that grew out of her experiences.
