  • i remember that if you played the game on christmas (or set the internal computer date to december 25), the knight in the Great Hall would become a christmas tree.

  • Am I the only one to think this game should be released on the DS?

  • Liked! Help though, I cant find any definitive guidelines: im looking to get an early Mac purely for Dark Castle, but id prefer one with a HD so I can play around without having to swap to an OS disk. I heard DC wasnt compatible with multifinder, though, so which mac should I avoid? Im tossing up between the Plus, the SE, and the 512 if all else fails and I can find one in my price range.

  • @bencheshire We used to play DC on a Mac Plus.

  • Dude, this was one of the first games I ever played, when I was 4. My hands were so little that I had to use my chin to hit spacebar when I wanted to jump (or throw rock, I don't remember the controls clearly). At the time this was the most impressive game out there!

  • 1:55 headshot 2:57 headshot :)

Real nice to see this again!

  • You guys can say this game is better all you want, I played this as a kid and it was like Lemmings-level hated by me.

So much bullshit. I think my father thought it was funny to make me play games like this, because all the games I played as a kid on the computer were like ridiculously difficult.

It was this, Oxid, Lemmings, Myst and well, Age of Wonders and Starcraft, but that was later and those are actually games I like playing, they're just really complicated for a kid.

  • pffffhaha poop

  • I was very sad there was no shout-out to the Mac version in the AVGN ep.

  • 2:56-2:59 WTF?! You chose to go BACK just for that?! Why would you do that?

  • What a shame James mentioned just the bad games... This one was really good.

  • This doesn't look any better than the Genesis version? It looks a little more fluent but it appears everything else is the same. Someone please explain why this one is any better!

  • @Protoman85 you play with a mouse. easier to aim... thac actually makes the game better

  • @Protoman85 Along with the mouse, the game just controlled leagues better than the Genesis piece of crap. It's like a really good version of Pitfall.

  • @Protoman85 You aim your rocks with a mouse,it's in old school B&W,every thing in the Genesis version is a few pixels off,and some of the sounds were cut in the Genesis version.

  • Back in the day, these graphics blew my mind.

  • Thumbs up if you watched the AVGN episode, went on Wikipedia, and went here.

  • @Tempest9000 I DID! I DID! I totally did just as you said!

  • @Tempest9000 That is EXACTLY how it played out.

  • @Tempest9000 I hope you all learned something about ports, and how they can often be shit versions of really good computer games.

  • @Tempest9000 I did all those, and in that order XD

  • Sega genisis and cdi versions are crappy ports, the Mac version was worlds better

  • actually urinatingtree sent me here 4 years ago

  • Ken sent me

  • I came here after looking this game up, after watching the AVGN ep. The genesis version he played looked absolutely deplorable. This one on the other hand, looks worlds better. Like something I would actually play better.

  • Rolfe really, really should have mentioned that the Mac version (which came out YEARS earlier) was the tits beyond all other tits, except for the super tits sequel, Beyond Dark Castle, which was even titsier. Tits.

  • Scores of Merit

    poop 3580

  • This version actually looks quite good, alot of early console ports were terrible.

  • so wait a minute... your telling me the mac version is playable while the genesis and cdi both suck donkey dicks while cramming cactuses down the dickhole while letting a skunk take a huge diarrhea dump in your eye sockets?... perhaps james rolfe shouldve played the mac version instead.

  • I had this fucking game when i was 6 and i hate it :D

  • AVGN sent me too. This actually looks somewhat playable.

  • AVGN sent me.

  • This is actually playable on mac?

  • Great game bitches.

  • Lol AVGN

  • pc version is always best

  • Finally rememberd the name of this mac game and found the game + emu.. nostalgic :) :) :)

  • hahah at 2:57

  • The sound effects are great for a 1986 game! I suppose the Mac was ahead in that department.

  • your hi-score name is Poop. tee hee hee

  • Sooo great to see this! Thank you! May I ask, how did you record this?

  • For as long as I can remember I've had the sounds of Trouble 3 stuck in my head.

  • 1:45 sex slaves

  • These sounds instantly bring me back to childhood.

  • @nylund154 yeh i know exactly what u mean....so crazy

  • I tried a while back to get a classic emulator up and running on OS X for the purposes of Dark Castle reminiscence, but I couldn't find one that worked. Any tips?

  • many thanks for posting this, brings back wonderful memories.

  • you rock for putting this up!

  • GOD I miss this game! I heard about the iPhone hoax, and was sorely disappointed. Beyond Dark Castle was tremendous!

  • heh. no wonder why this games so horriable. it was intended for mac.

  • WOW, type warp. My dad used to own at this game when I was just a kid, I used to watch him and cheer him on. I never was as good but then again I was just 7

  • this game was so hard. i never made it out of any of these stupid rooms. then again, i was 5.

  • I used to play this over at my cousins house when i was younger - awesome game made me want to buy a MAC

  • I love the sound effects on this game, I'll never forget them! Oh man the robots used to piss me off so much!!! It was so hard to aim with the clunky old mac classic mouse too.

  • I used to LOVE games like this.

  • Many happy hours playing this game and its sequel. It amused me to no end that the executioner's whip wasn't long enough to hit all three prisoners. I was easily amused circa 1990.

  • Thanks for the video, but I remember the game too well, and this is the DEMO rather than you playing!

  • Best version of this game.

It's funny how ahead of its time the old mac was. You couldn't get digital sound like that out of a PC unless you had a high-end sound card, but on the Mac, not only could you get true digital audio, you had a microphone to record it with.

  • i remember buying this for the amiga, and to my suprise and disapointment the mac version was alot better.

  • I can't get this classic game to work on my G4 :(

  • omg ... this brings me back.. thank you so much for posting this.... my families first computer the 80k mac *Enhanced!!*

it makes me smile to think of how immersive this felt to me at the time.

    cheers

  • Anyone know where I could find a copy, I have a craving to play this game again.

  • 2:00 Yeah that never got old! =p

  • lol! At the start, that sound always reminds me of Peggle xD

  • :O woa

  • If anyone has footage of Shuttle Puck Cafe that'd be uber X)

  • STILL a classic

  • I was so frickin' good at this game. It was the only thing I played for a year, and I LOVED the sequel. It's frustrating to watch this video cause all the shortcuts (he doesn't down-jump off ledges, he pauses between staircases, and he never ducks to avoid the guards)... man, I was all over this. Great to hear the sound effects though. Looks like you found a bug too, where he steps out in mid air before killing the henchman. hmm.

  • This really shows how advanced Macs were back then, the game plays like a modern flash game albeit without colour.

  • Wow, this takes me back! I remember playing this, along with Loderunner, Taskmaker, and Gang Wars on my black and white Mac. So many memories.

  • This brings back great memories! My boyfriend and I used to play this for hours at night during college back in the late 80s. (This and Lode Runner!) He and I have now been married almost 17 years -- and we still stay up way too late playing video games together!

  • Bring this to the I_Phone!

  • wow.. I'm 6 years old again...

  • Wow! Nice blast from the past. This game rocked it! I remember playing this for over 8 hours straight one day back in '86 or '87.

  • I might be a bit crazy here, but i apply the term "quality" to a game based off how much fun people have with it, not by how the individual elements stack up to other games.

I have played many a game for many a year and I loved this game and it's sequel!

  • How can you play the original MAC version on a modern PC with win XP?

  • Mini Vmac.

  • Wow!! This brought back memories from my MAC 512 days!! This, along with Airborne and Ancient Art of War were my favorite games! I used to think the graphics were amazing back then! LOL.

  • OMG i loved that game, its so freaking awesome ! ! !, do you record it from a mac emulator or something?

  • I've been looking for a game for years that was on a Mac demo CD back in the early 90s. Does anyone know anything about that era?

  • OMG... I LOVED Dark Castle! I remember playing it on my old 512 Mac. My girlfriend and I use to play it and we'd be laughing our butts off!

  • This was one of my favorite classic mac games that I used to play on my dads mac when I was a kid( I think I first played it when I was 7 or 8) I doubt it would work on any of the newer macs. my other favorites were "mac challenger" a game where you had to land the space shuttle, "MacVegas" which was Apples version of casino gaming, and Ferrari Grand Prix which for its time had some pretty great graphics(even if it was only in black, white and grey)

  • HELL YEAH!!!!

  • This is the computer playing. I remember the demo.

  • I do too. This is definitely the demo , move for move.

  • man that was awsmoe.......... it took me bk, thing i remember most was those SFX and MUSIC............loved it..

  • This game is the first thing i ever craved, that i can remember. I remember being 4 and playing this after preschool.

  • Dark Castle and Return to Dark castle are two of the most epic computer games I have ever played, alongside The Fool's Errand, Lode Runner, Shockwave Assault II, and Rollercoaster Tycoon (any edition).

  • I find it hard to consider this game good after playing the Mega Drive/Genesis port... I've read that it's not a very faithful port though. What do you think?

  • Oh I love watching this so much! I played this game over and over as a child, could probably do it with my eyes closed. Thank you so much!

  • I know this is going to piss people off, but I just have to say it;

It really shows what a lack of games the Mac had, that people consider this to be a great game. It's only legendary today because Mac owners didn't have a couple dozen other platform games to pick from.

Speaking as someone who has played hundreds of platform games on at least 11 different systems since the 1980s, Dark Castle always seemed like something you'd find in the discount bin with all the other stuff that didn't sell.

  • I used to love this game!...Havent played it in years...I also remember playing a game on my old mac called "Schmoozer"...anybody know where I could find that one?

  • I had that too, as well as Swamp Witch, Zoony, The Village, Karth of the Jungle, Enchanted Scepters and a lot of other text-and-still-image "World Builder" games. I was a little kid at the time. I would do anything to have these games back, they are a part of my childhood. But they have all vanished. They are lost in time...like tears in the rain. I would be willing to pay a great deal of money to somehow get these games back, if it were possible.

  • Where can one but this?????????

  • Desde Venezuela... Es una belleza, jugaba Dark Castle cuando tenía apenas 9 años en una Macintosh plus (512 kb Ram) Los sonidos y las imágenes son fantásticas! Me trasladan en el tiempo...

  • trouble 3 was by far my favorite level!

  • Thanks for uploading this - I always liked this game but was never very good at it.

  • I like how you have the deaths too :)

  • A sequel has been released this year. The name is Return to dark Castle. I suggest you google it and buy it you want.

  • u csn play this on the iphone/touch...its an easter egg

  • That's a rumor that's been proven false, sorry!

  • Thanks for posting. I couldn't remember the name of this game to save my life. I used to play this with my best friend in high school at his house. Thanks much!

  • Nice one, gruzless!

  • oh my god i played this when i was like 6 :D oh the memories

  • haha awesome, I remember playing this game a long time ago, the flaming eyeball at the end always frustrated me though.

  • Somehow this looks familiar.

  • Oh man, when I was a kid, I got to the last boss maybe twice and could never beat. This game is HARD. A classic though

  • i'm gorve up with the game! thank you very much!

  • The game used to make me scared. I was only 3 though then it came out. I had this game, one where you drop a guy from a helicopter into a cart pulled by a horse, Uninvited, and a dinosaur game where you colored them in, but there was no color so it was shades. The computer didnt even have a hard drive

  • owned at 1:08

  • if anyone knows where to get a download of this for mac osx pls send me a message! thanx :)

  • who has this game in color for upload?

  • Thanks so much for putting this up. One of my crowning glories as a 11 year old is finishing this game. I think i might even shed a tear..

  • Oh my word, this much nostalgia just might give me a heart seizure.... Great memories! Thanks for posting!

  • close ur eyes... it sounds like sex

  • Hahah, that's the funniest comment yet!

  • ur welcome

  • if only ppls cooments were like urs

  • @AgentCDI Sure it does. If you're fucking handicapped people in wheelchairs, that is.

  • I spent WAY too much time in this game as a kid ;-)

  • HA! I remember that screen where you have to grab the morning star to knock out the guy with the whip. I remember finding that glitch that makes you levitate there, too. Probably the first video game glitch I ever found. I couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 at the time. Thanks for the memories!

  • OMG i used to LOVE that game it's so fun!!!

  • Reminds me of Shadowgate, especially the foyer of the castle.

  • i played this game on my grandpa's amiga when i was 8 or shomthing :p

  • God, I haven't thought of this in years. I remember how revolutionary this was when it was first released. Somehow, it still seems as revolutionary now as it did then. Great vid.

  • Amazing ç_ç

  • For what purpose did you make me pull out my 512Ke just to play this game again? Just to give me something to do? Oh, well. It's SO much fun!

  • I had forgotten how much fun it is. Thanks for making me do that!

  • I'm glad I sparked your memory, it's such a fun game! :)

  • Thanks!

By the way, I also found out through this experience that, in fact, my 512ke still works just perfectly.

  • Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle were my two favorite games as a kid in the late 80s. My dad had a Mac S.E. I miss these games. Your video brings back wonderful memories.

  • Bro! How did you capture the video? Emulator?

  • vaay be herkes bilmez bu oyunu :D ne günlerdi sabahlara kadar oynardım bu oyunu Macintosh SE 30 makinemde :D

  • Wonderful Memories, to hear those sound effects again !! Especially the "dizzy" one !

  • @gregvideo07 great dizzy sound indeed!

  • This looks a lot better than the Genesis/Mega Drive version.

  • PWNED @ 1:09

  • I loved this game! This came out the first year of uni for me - about 1989 or so. I'm going through a retro game fetish at the moment, and just remember this and wondered (hoped) someone had ported it to PC/linux.

  • I wrote a guide on how to get this game running in Windows XP/Vista, It's at the Dark Castle forum, the link to the forum is in the video description.

  • classic, played it on my mac SE

  • played this as a kid so much, i remember there was a part 2 to it that had like a backpack chopper and lotsas stages... nianianiania nianianiania

  • dude, that's awesome. i used to play this game when i was a kid and just remembered it like a week ago. i'd forgotten everything about the gameplay but watching this i remembered every sample and the absolute fury you felt over the controls :)

  • I had the genesis version of this game and all i can say is... it sucked! But i have never tried this version and i belive it could be a lot more playable than the geneis version

  • That's because it's not the mac version.

  • The good old days!

  • this game was the shit

  • Just looking around at other versions (ie not for Mac) of Dark Castle.. and have to say the Mac version was the best, despite, or perhaps because it is b&w.

For those interested, Z Sculpt, working for Delta Tao (?) who own the rights to the game, have just finished "Return to Dark Castle"...

  • Macs are Awesome... (Is using an intell Imac G5 xD ) i still have a really old mac (well.. my dad does) i think its and apple ll.... My dad told me about dark castle. :)

  • can you give us a site? I have been unable to find one

  • Learn how to play this on your computer and talk with other Dark Castle fans at

    ht tp://s6.invisionfree . com/Dark_Castle_Forum/

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sure you can find Dark Castle and an emulator on google.

  • You're going to make me pull out my old Mac Plus out of the closet so I can play this, huh? :) Seeing this brings back great memories. Thanks!

  • You still have a working Mac Plus? That's awesome!

  • Long live dark Castle, you're not bad for being 'Rusty' :)
