I recently saw a documentary that spoke of young men who could not longer bear the strain of living in those trenches being executed. I really can't think of much that could possibly be sadder than that. How miserable that must have been for the wife and children of that man. I guess you could say that the bodies of some were killed in the trenches and others had their spirits killed in the trenches and then their bodies were killed by their own people. Tragic.

He also talks of how soldiers would just suddenly break down and start screaming gibberish.

That's still a grievously high number, but it is also less than 1/3rd of what was claimed. Far from your contention that "there are no 'good' guys' in war", I'd suggest you take a trip to Auschwitz or read "The Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang. More often than not, war is morally ambiguous, but there are times when it is not. (WWII being example.)

There was nothing glorious about the Great War. This is just one more example of the meaningless of that war.
Consider that most of these men were foolish volunteers - tricked a public relations campaign and a mass war psychosis. There is nothing impressive or valorous about their applying to fight in this appaling war. There is far more honor in those resolute principled men who refused to fight.

Easy for us to say in 2009 that people in 1917 should have had hindsight in the "meaninglessness" of World War I. Society was different then. People were patriots who actually believed in causes greater than themselves.
