Listen, I hope you don't consider me a noob for asking this question but I'm a rather casual gamer and I while I think this game looks really cool, does it take much commitment to play? I mean I have a joystick and everything, but I don't wnana be constantly playing it. I understand the realism however and that looks cool. Do you guys still recommend it?

Yes. But you then don't need to insert the CD in the computer to play every time.
If you stick around long enough to get past the somewhat steep learning curve (well worth the effort!) & get hooked, you really won't care about the monthly fee, which really only amounts to being much less than $1 per hour played.
Infantry is better using keyboard & mouse, just takes some getting used to. Keymapper allows total customization too if you don't like the default settings (which I didn't).
All anti-air guns, anti-tank guns, & naval vessels also work well w/ a joystick along w/armor & trucks. For flying though you definitely need a joystick, but you need a higher-quality one. I tried flying using basic pad w/ 6- & 8-button Sidewinder-style joysticks & couldn't even customize enough to get up off the ground.
if you die during one of these battles, do you respawn in the town until the battle is over or do you respawn at a base location far away from the town/city?

well it takes alot of training and practice to get into it, but once your decent, you can play casually, its not like you have to play to level up.

In the town, but not necessairly right in the thick of fighting. Some battles are street to street, some are in the countryside.
