LOL, this is great. I remember seeing this guy on PBS when I was a little kid and thinking that he seemed a cranky, old man. I could hardly understand anything he was presenting because I was so young. But I continued to watch because once in awhile I would pick up on something interesting. My continued interest in science in adulthood must be partly due to him. Thank-you Professor Miller.
I use to love watching him. What a nut, but he was so fun to watch. he REALLY was passionate about what he did, and that was always good to see. Thanks for your post...it's really great!!!
As a child this was one of my favorites shows, it's a shame that kids today can't experience things like this anymore, it would definitely produce some much needed great minds.
i enjoyed this...excellent teacher...but I think his voice sounds something like the Wizard...from the Wizard of Oz..."pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"
@aachelabelaaron No, that happens even when the water doesn't touch the curtain. Water heats the air which rises and sucks air in the bottom. Try it with a cold shower (you don't have to be in there) or with the curtain not fully closed allowing air in through the side.
@johnclawed It's not necessary for the water to touch the curtain--the fact that the water is going that fast in that direction actually starts a breeze by shoving the air in the same direction, and other air gets dragged along.
I didn't run the experiment you suggested, though, so, not sure. But I think that what @aachelabelaaron said is probably right. And what you're saying could also be right--with all the stuff going on with the water, vapor pressure, heat, there could be multiple things
Simon Bar Sinister!!!!! I've been trying to remember who the cartoon mad scientist was!!!! Thank you and thanks for posting all of these videos, I loved watching this guy as a kid. Ubergeeks unite!!!
I like Bill Nye, certainly, and Beekman was amusing in his own "Saturday morning" kind of way, and respect MUST be paid to the great Mr. Wizard... but not one of them can come close to the pure genuine enthusiasm that Julius Sumner Miller displays. The greatest scientific mind in all of televised history!
I always thought Miller was more for the college kids. Bill Nye was for high school kids. Mr. Wizard was for junior high school crowd and Beekman was for elementary school kids.
he made learning fun unlike Professors today who want to ram politics down our young persons throats and dont even teach the lessons anymore. RIP Professor, I enjoyed your teachings
I LOVED Fridays in Science class when I was in junior high. That was the day we'd watch Dr. Miller. I was always a good student, and very interested in Science. But Dr. Miller showed what everything we talked about actually meant. He was always so excited about the subjects, and that got me excited too. I'm thrilled to find Dr. Miller's experiments here on Youtube. When my daughter is older, we'll watch these together.
I dont feel "old" but Miller was one of my physics profs back in the 50s, before he was ever on TV. I am amazed to see him again here as well as seeing some of the blogs that demean him. This man was a genius & great college prof, a student of Einstein. In gen. physics class, his section on atomic sci. was outstanding, he took us to the cyclotron at UCLA, he collaborated with Cal-Tech scientists like Gell-mann & even touched on transmutation equations in our basic class. A remarkable genius
please someone explain to me why, when the funnel is in normal position with the ball up, does the ball not rise, I understand it when its upside down; less pressure, moves up.
But when the ball is on top of the funnel, all air simply escapes through the little side? because I hear a sucking noise, but why?
To gustavoadolfo44: physics is not my business but I think the principle is the same regardless of the orientation of the funnel...high velocity air creates lower-than-atmospheric pressure at the narrow end of the funnel so the air at the wide end of the funnel (at atmospheric pressure) pushes the ball against the narrow end.
I watched re-runs of Demonstrations in Physics with Dr. Miller on PBS while I was in high school in the late 80s. I went into engineering and through undergrad and grad school there was not one prof who was as good a teacher, entertaining or personable as Dr. Miller! Having a dry and boring personality must be a prerequisite for those in Physics, Math and Engineering. This rule doesn't just hold for academia, but industry too!
It's definitely obvious he is passionate about his subject. I have had physic teachers who teach the same lessons as last year, give out homework, and one project for US to figure out what would happen and why. So I agree, I have such a great interest in Physics and Mathematics, but unforunately the professor who cared the most was from Economics...the rest is history.

I can't believe ol' Julius is here on youtube. It really brings back a lot of memories about junior high science class. The man is just excited to be alive and spreading the 'gospel' of science in his videos!
My twin daughters are into Bill Nye. I told them about watching this guy on WQED Pittsburgh when I was in the fifth grade. Just as wondeful now as back then. Glad to see him again.

I miss the days when you could actually learn something from TV. Professor Miller, Dan Posin and others put useful knowledge into people's heads, unlike today's pap peddlers. They called it in the early 60s: TV has become a vast wasteland.
I can remember watching this and many other similar programs on the educational films from the University of Michigan as a child in the early 1970's that used to run in 'graveyard' time at many stations to fulfill their FCC mandate for such programming at the time. WSYR TV in Syracuse, NY used to run these right at sign-on, 6am on Saturday mornings before the cartoons. I bet there's a lot of those old University of Michigan programs still around, they were hoky but they were wonderful.
Not drunk at all. He was thrilled to teach, to demonstrate in easily understood forms, just how physics work. And so he was a man who was truly happy when he was working.
Wow, this brought back some memories. This guy rules!

Is he drunk?
MaskinJunior 4 years ago
Not drunk at all. He was thrilled to teach, to demonstrate in easily understood forms, just how physics work. And so he was a man who was truly happy when he was working.
