@berrypossum dude, screw them.. play away. If you make this lick feel tight in the middle of your solo and someone calls you out on it because you quoted it from here, it's their problem. Truth be told, jazz players can be dicks and if they would get you on that, chances are they got you on something else long before you did it. lol
Dude this guy did a video lesson series called Inversion Excursion. I didn't realize this guy made this vid, I'm glad I clicked on it. This guy is so sick! And he's a fantastic teacher with wonderful and useful ideas.
Let me start by saying if you sound good, then who cares? BUT, i have to get you here: Why think Bb? Besides the fact that it's even stated in the video title to be a ii-V progression, every note is in the key of Bb; it just doesn't resolve for the sake of the exercise...
and you're a jazzer, right? How many figures have you played that don't resolve to the I? That's all over the jazz idiom; it doesn't change the diatonic key, though. This is 100% in the key of Bb.
@guitarslim56 for clarity: your approach TOTALLY can be Cm. That would even make it cool - especially with that natural 6 in the F7 chord, but TECHNICALLY, it's a Bb lick...
@somebodyjones2 Aah, thank you..I'm learning theory and you can't imagine how many times I've watched this after the "It's in C" comment. Haha, thanks.
I try to play and work with your amazing guitar CD`s. Every day one or two hours. It ist a speed for me, because your cours ist very professionel and honest!! Thanks. And all the best.
I'm stickin' to my bass! Well, unless no guitar players are availble.
This is an amazing time. When I was starting to play in the 50's, nobody was willing to show his licks. GREAT STUFF FOR KIDS TRYING TO LEARN, THANKS!!!!!!
@lektrikbass there will never be a time when no guitar players are available... we grow on trees. (unless you mean "guitar players who can read music" ... THEN you might get some gigs. lol)
What an awesome sounding phrase! It actually gave me the will to learn theory into such detail as knowing the Major 7th and whatnot just to be able to play stuff that sounds so good consciously!
@Ningirsutyr the malor 7th doesn't matter much.... this very nice phrase starts on the main notes of the C-9 chord, the minor 3rd and the 9th, and goes down using the minor pentatonic scale (the blues), then the lick goes up, still using the C-9 arpeggio against an F7 chord( the blues again : you play the first degree minor pentatonic against the second chord, always the fourth degree
Country pickers like Hank Garland could really smoke on guitar as good as jazz players...Hank was a studio musician. THe highest calling for many of us.
lol i give up on this one. he's going too fast. when your expert at anything, you forget how to break things up in simpler or slower terms for beginners. he should have went oe note at a time for us EXTREME noobs.
@FLpolo You should really learn music theory and phrasing, he says 'major 7 interval starting on the 3 in Cm' i instantly know what he means and where to start and i fill in the gaps with my ears and my knowledge of theory and try work out what's being done that makes this a unique riff. Trying to learn jazz without learning music theory is like pissing into the wind, it'll work...just not well.
@FLpolo I'd say this is not for EXTREME N00BZ, I've been playing (nonjazz) for 27 years and it took me a good 12 minutes to pick this riff out. Worth the effort though, this is a cool riff.
@FLpolo all you have to do is click on the link to truefire you can download the complete collection with all the tabs and backingtracks for about 13 dollars us.
Love your music. I'm not a guitar player, I'm a sax player. Transposing your licks through all keys is a great workout and warm up on the horn! Thanks!
Love your music. I'm not a guitar player, I'm a sax player. Transposing your licks through all keys is a great workout and warm up on the horn! Thanks!
I HIGHLY recommend Frank's "Jammin' The Blues" book/CD published by Mel Bay. Great "bop" oriented lines play at two tempos over various jazz/blues progressions. Pay attention to the 8th measure! Learning these blues based progressions is the ideal stepping stone into jazz. In fact, it's essential.
Just love these licks and I would like to purchase the course. However before I do I need to know how long are each of the backing tracks that go with them. I would need the backing tracks to go on for at least 5 mins or longer and they would need to be on a CD. I perform jazz guitar with jazz backing CDs and I would like to do the same with these. So are they lengthy backing tracks and on a CD. Presumably there are two speeds as well. If all this is satisfactory then I'll purchase.
Would someone kindly let me know how long are the backing tracks that you get with these licks? There are two speeds and I would like to know how much time do I get to spread out and play/jam on them. If we get at least 5min or more then I might purchase the course. Thanks.
@jmsbk12345 well they're a couple of minutes long. But you can transfer them from your comp. to looping machine as they are mp3. I convert them into wav format first and then I copy them onto my digitech jamman's CF. I use Magix Music Maker to convert it and with that I can make the loop pretty much as long as I want it. If you buy the lesson it comes with the truefire browser and all thebackings can be played from the browser. I payed about 10 euros to download this. I'm totally satisfied.
Frank is a great player and teacher. Check out his book/CD on standards. He writes contrafacts over the "standard" progression. His melodies equal the original and you can jam over them at two different tempos. Great stuff!!
trumpet player here. I think I finally got this down after numerous tries. Now I gotta put it in the !1 other keys. Thanks for taking the time to put these licks on. Obviously, not just for guitar players.
It's encouraging that not every young player is interested in playing fast arpeggios and scales through 500 watts and 12 speakers........i.e. making a lot of racket that has little to do with real music. Frank is a really fine musician, confident enough in his own playing that he doesn't have shit sticking out of his face or drawings on his body. He doesn't haver to wear his mother's costume jewelry to be noticed.

these help SOOO much. For someone like me who is new to jazz it's so hard to listen to a 10min solo and know how to pick out the 'right' jazz licks. Thanks!
Would someone kindly let me know exactly what you get with this 50 jazz licks CD/DVD? I mainly would like to know about the rhythm tracks that come with it. Do we get a CD with both a slow and then fast track for each lick (100 tracks)? How long are each of the tracks as I could do with tracks that are about 5 or 6 minutes or longer so that I can really stretch out. Is that what we get? Thank you for your help. John
@EightToneSpanish Thank you for your reply. However no one yet has actually answered my question. I just want to know about the rhythm backing tracks that come with these licks. I already can play the licks but I need to improvise, swing and groove over a swinging backing track like the ones you hear Frank soloing over. Does anyone have the backing tracks and is it possible for me to just have the set of backing tracks? Thank you. John
Yep you need to be able to play these licks.. or at least your version of them. Jazz is Jazz. Relies on feelings and interpretation. Not memorised licks. Memorise the scales first, then mess with them till you get what YOU like!
Still like this vid Good stuff. better than I can play! :)
@jamesdancer73 Pretty ignorant comment. You should be ashamed if your a musician. I know plenty of musicians who are into more than one style and there isn't anything wrong with that.
@jamesdancer73 Dude, just don't say things like that. I like all styles of music, which includes BOTH Heavy Metal and Jazz. You shouldn't judge somebody by genres, that's ignorant.
@MayonaiseKing100 Jazz is the rocket science of music for sure haha...
That's the bummer news... the good news is that it isn't as tough as rocket science! just takes time to grasp like any other style in music! Just keep listening and study away bud! I'm listening to it often, reading about it, watching videos... whatever i can do to find my way to incorporating it into my own style!
@MikeTheGuy00 I don't think its the rocket science of music. The only reason it's hard is because we don't listen to it everyday, and hear jazz everywhere we go. If we were surrounded by jazz, we would think jazz was easier to play than other things, like rock or blues or heavy metal. If anyone wants to learn jazz, go about it like you did learning rock, start by learning songs and riffs that you like, and eventually you will understand the music.
@MikeTheGuy00 Yeah good point I'm trying to learn jazz too, it's hard cuz of the key changes and all the different chord types. Getting away from the pentatonic scale is hard, and so is trying to use the notes in the chord in a solo.
@mattdd05 Exactly. Jazz is a highly formulated style, though, ironically natural at the same time. I wasn't born on jazz myself... so it comes to me different... but the more i listen to it, the more natural it gets. Like reading is the most important part in being a good writer, listening is most definitely one of the most important aspects in being a good musician. :-)
please post more from different styles. Jazz, Rock, Blues..Thanksssss a LOT! From Colombia man. Hope us seeing you guys from down under will mAke ya post more.
Great lick sir, i just wanted to know if that lick is played in a Lydian mode..? and i guess you are also adding notes from the Mixolydian and Aeolian mode.. is that ok?
@aGraphicWay Hi the chord sequence is a II,V, ( 2nd chord in the key to the fifth or dominant) Cm7 to F7. The parent key is Bb but we tend to focus on the first chord Cm7, in the progression. So you solo in C dorian.
C dorian is the Bb major scale starting on the second degree ( or note of the scale)
The notes of C Dorian are, C,D, Eb,F,G ,A,Bb,C. Hope this helps.
@AcousticMax Thank you for the explanation!! i also would like to know if LICKS PLAYED IN A MAJOR KEY can be taken to a MINOR KEY .. for example.. i'm jamming over Autumn Leaves, and i want to include this lick in my solos..the key of Autumn leaves is Eminor, so the fourth degree would be Adorian..can i take this lick and play it in the Adorian scale even though the key of the song is minor?
@aGraphicWay I think you might be confused about the modes. You can change licks over minor chords so they fit over major but you would tailor it to suit the major tonality.
For now, you say your version of Autumn Leaves is in Em so I take it your first 4 bars are , Am7 / / / | D7/ / / | Gmaj7 / / / | Cmaj7 / / / | This is a II V I IV progression. The mode would be A dorian so to transpose Franks lick to bar one. Play C 5th fret G string as 1st note, then up maj7th to B 7th fret E string.
love your playing but for a guy like me whos been playing for 5 mths its too quick and not too clear , sorry.u have really cool licks i wish there was tabs or u had slowed it down even more. lolgreat stuff though love ur sound.
@phyrl3 if you can play the vids with gomplayer (free vid player) you can slow down the video's for fast stuff like this. I use that to practice... still hard for me though lol might work for you.
@GaryNull Gary...most musicians starting out learn in this manner..Imitation, assimilation, innovation. All any of us do is recreate what we have already heard, but in our own character....what makes each musician unique is the ability to be honest in a composition, and fearless when improvising.. This is the learning process.
i dig your tone!

what on earth are the chords that go underneath this little lick?? jazz is so damn confusing. amazing though
MayonaiseKing100 1 year ago
@MayonaiseKing100 Jazz is the rocket science of music for sure haha...
That's the bummer news... the good news is that it isn't as tough as rocket science! just takes time to grasp like any other style in music! Just keep listening and study away bud! I'm listening to it often, reading about it, watching videos... whatever i can do to find my way to incorporating it into my own style!

@MikeTheGuy00
Just to be pedantic, but I bet jazz guitar is as hard to most rocket scientists as rocket science is to us musicians, dude!!!

@TheRetroSamurai Haha, more in likely. ;)

@MikeTheGuy00 sorry is the classic music
yenproject 1 year ago
@MikeTheGuy00 I don't think its the rocket science of music. The only reason it's hard is because we don't listen to it everyday, and hear jazz everywhere we go. If we were surrounded by jazz, we would think jazz was easier to play than other things, like rock or blues or heavy metal. If anyone wants to learn jazz, go about it like you did learning rock, start by learning songs and riffs that you like, and eventually you will understand the music.
mattdd05 1 year ago
@mattdd05 Well, the music itself isn't... but the theory is more advanced. I'm simply exaggerating things.
MikeTheGuy00 1 year ago
@MikeTheGuy00 Yeah good point I'm trying to learn jazz too, it's hard cuz of the key changes and all the different chord types. Getting away from the pentatonic scale is hard, and so is trying to use the notes in the chord in a solo.
mattdd05 1 year ago
@mattdd05 Exactly. Jazz is a highly formulated style, though, ironically natural at the same time. I wasn't born on jazz myself... so it comes to me different... but the more i listen to it, the more natural it gets. Like reading is the most important part in being a good writer, listening is most definitely one of the most important aspects in being a good musician. :-)

@MayonaiseKing100 the chords are Cm7 F7, a ii V7 in Bflat.

@MayonaiseKing100 Maybe if you spent a little less time ruling over Mayonaise you would have time to recombobulate yourself, your majesty.

Great lick sir, i just wanted to know if that lick is played in a Lydian mode..? and i guess you are also adding notes from the Mixolydian and Aeolian mode.. is that ok?
aGraphicWay 1 year ago
@aGraphicWay Hi the chord sequence is a II,V, ( 2nd chord in the key to the fifth or dominant) Cm7 to F7. The parent key is Bb but we tend to focus on the first chord Cm7, in the progression. So you solo in C dorian.
C dorian is the Bb major scale starting on the second degree ( or note of the scale)
The notes of C Dorian are, C,D, Eb,F,G ,A,Bb,C. Hope this helps.

@AcousticMax Thank you for the explanation!! i also would like to know if LICKS PLAYED IN A MAJOR KEY can be taken to a MINOR KEY .. for example.. i'm jamming over Autumn Leaves, and i want to include this lick in my solos..the key of Autumn leaves is Eminor, so the fourth degree would be Adorian..can i take this lick and play it in the Adorian scale even though the key of the song is minor?
aGraphicWay 1 year ago
@aGraphicWay I think you might be confused about the modes. You can change licks over minor chords so they fit over major but you would tailor it to suit the major tonality.
For now, you say your version of Autumn Leaves is in Em so I take it your first 4 bars are , Am7 / / / | D7/ / / | Gmaj7 / / / | Cmaj7 / / / | This is a II V I IV progression. The mode would be A dorian so to transpose Franks lick to bar one. Play C 5th fret G string as 1st note, then up maj7th to B 7th fret E string.

@phyrl3 if you can play the vids with gomplayer (free vid player) you can slow down the video's for fast stuff like this. I use that to practice... still hard for me though lol might work for you.

learn licks so you can just sound like everyone else ??
GaryNull 1 year ago
@GaryNull Gary...most musicians starting out learn in this manner..Imitation, assimilation, innovation. All any of us do is recreate what we have already heard, but in our own character....what makes each musician unique is the ability to be honest in a composition, and fearless when improvising.. This is the learning process.
rooseguitar64 1 year ago
@GaryNull So you can have a vocabulary and understanding of the stylistic melodic content in a style of music.
