Sorry ... I forgot to mention that she showed up at our front door with her utility bills that she claimed were ours. We were like, "um, these are dated two months before we moved in" ... she still insisted they were ours and demanded money. When we refused to pay her bills, she grabbed them and stormed off. that was a nice day ... great way to relax in at home in "paradise" ... it's outrageous behavior. But you know, Pura Vida!!!!! ;-)

So be careful down here! She saw us coming and thought she was going to get a nice big chunk of money. It really is amazing how well they can lie right to your face. However, it's also sad. We found the right place this past week though so we still love it here.

At 4:45 minutes. We've been here for 3 mos and had the same exact experience with a Costa Rican woman.Totally lied to our face, ripped us off, then came up and hugged us both.Luckily we saw this video and read a lot of information on moving here and protected ourselves for the most part. She only got a couple extra hundred bucks from us, whereas, originally she asked us for 3K up front!Some of them are thieves and liars.

Costa Rica's problem with illegal immigrants (likely from Nicaragua) is probably the reason for the strain on their health care system. Unfortunately, who can blame the NicaraguansA? Their goverment officials would just as soon see them die...more money to line their pockets with.

Well I love these guys and after 10 years of living in Tanzania, sorry, but while it is certainly not ALL Ticos, I have been here 4 months and every damn month a local tries to rip me off for something. 4:00 WHAT? HUH? I've traveled to 20 countries and lived in 5 of them. CR is NOT cheap. In fact, I spent more there than I did in Chicago!!!!...It is definitely in the top 5 for most expensive places I visited.

This country is crap, the night life sux, the roads sux, the transport sux, the people sux and there is lot of racism there, but there is also some nice people as well, the crime is really bad, you can't go out too late cause you might get robbed. So they got some bushes, we got some bushes as well as big as the entire Costa Rica. It is affordable and accessable and it beats the US system hands down. Most HMO's are now shipping patients down here for procedures. Unlike you I don't talk out of my ass and if u want to be operated by monkeys, good luck.

The fact is that every single expat I've spoken with has had praise for health care here; quality care with dignity at a fraction of what they'd have spent at home... in many cases at no cost whatsoever.

It means that the medical system requires more money to operate than it brings in.,, what with NOT being a proffit center for fat cat HMOs! Unlike the US, Costa Rica doesn't spend an amount equal to its federal tax on wars in 3 countries. They shut their army down decades ago and redirected those funds into health care and education. The gov't funds medicine, keeping it affordable. Shocking what you can afford with no army!

why they don't mention about all the stealing? I lived there a few years, and very local style and had very few issues, but there is so much stealing everywhere, I went from M.A. to Montezuma with a local tico who lives in Montezuma, he is tall has tats and long hair and he told me to always watch your bag, once there was a diversion right after he got on the bus, he turned his head, his bag was passed out the window and another guy took off with it instantly, this stuff happens all the time.

@toprobone William here, I tell people all the time that there are three sports in CR: Sex, Soccer and Stealing ha ha. Seriously though, Mike is right; while there is petty theft here for sure, it is still a safe coountry to travel in. If you have two brain cells to rub together and use a bit of common sense, then you'll never have a problem with it.

MMM, you see, I have places for rent in San Jose for $220, and the average contract is for 2 years, but if you use the place for less than 6 month the price is higher, if is for 3 months it will be the double at list, even if you are from marsh. Most of the tico know that and is in “Ley del inquilinato”(Renting law)I hope this will prevent some miss understanding.
