Good point. It was Jiang Wei's devotion to his mother that led him to defect from Wei in the first place. Very likely that if Sima Yi had captured her, Jiang Wei would have returned to Wei if he felt it would save her life.

Sunzi was ok. I would put the Duke of Zhou, Bai Qi, Guan Zhong, Yue Yi, Wu Qi, Lu Shang, and Yi Yin over Sun, Sima, or Zhuge. Cao Cao himself towers over all three.

Oh, and silly me, but the mightiest general in Chinese history is, FAR and away, Xiang Yu. Say what you want about his shortcomings, but they were not on the battlefield, other than Gaixia, in which his love for his wife killed him, not Han Xin.
I disagree. For starters, I will admit that Sun Tzu may not have actually existed at all. Second, Cao Cao's inability to conquer Shu Han and Wu despite his advantages over them is another testament that although he was skilled, he was not above the men you listed. I think his devastating defeat at Chi Bi, his humiliating defeat in pursuit of Dong Zhou and his defeat at Han Zhong put him below the rest. I've always been partial to Han Xin anyway.
it's such a shame that sun tzu's text is mostly missing. after reading most of the text, i was left largely unimpressed and uninspired... but I read it after I had already read T'ai Kung Six Secret Teachings and Ssu Ma (those two are from the 7 chinese military classics book)

Zhuge Liang didn't retreat, he withdrew-there is a difference between the two. Sima Yi's victory over Ma Su was as he himself admitted, easy due to Ma Su's mistake. Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang likely never actually faced off in any other significant battle other than Wu Zhang plains.

wow...let me explain to you young one. after the sanguo period a man wrote down what happened during all of the years of war. the novel would be revised and rewritten multipule times thus making it..yes a little bit unreal in terms of the details but the gereral plot has remained the same and this was made in 1995 to portray what would have went down about 2000 yrs ago in china.

If they only lived together in same timeline, we'll see who's better =) Its clear for me now, whether you are true or not, I truly respect zhuge liang and the shu, although I came from wu. Who knows maybe were reincarnated of our ancestors and the way we interact with one another is the thing that will happen if my ancestor and yours meet.

I dont care if your family name is 'Zhuge', i can simply change my name to Zhuge Jun, and call myself a descendant. Your family may have passed down oral traditions of stories on you being a Zhuge, but that is not evidence.

Ur kidding right? EVERYONE used Sun Tzu's stratagies, in fact Every strategist in the three kingdoms era have read the art of war, actully almost every strategist in chinese history has read the art of war (after it was written of course). Nobody would ever consider them self above Sun Tzu.

Sunzi was ok. I would put the Duke of Zhou, Bai Qi, Guan Zhong, Yue Yi, Wu Qi, Lu Shang, and Yi Yin over Sun, Sima, or Zhuge. Cao Cao himself towers over all three.

Oh, and silly me, but the mightiest general in Chinese history is, FAR and away, Xiang Yu. Say what you want about his shortcomings, but they were not on the battlefield, other than Gaixia, in which his love for his wife killed him, not Han Xin.

I disagree. For starters, I will admit that Sun Tzu may not have actually existed at all. Second, Cao Cao's inability to conquer Shu Han and Wu despite his advantages over them is another testament that although he was skilled, he was not above the men you listed. I think his devastating defeat at Chi Bi, his humiliating defeat in pursuit of Dong Zhou and his defeat at Han Zhong put him below the rest. I've always been partial to Han Xin anyway.

it's such a shame that sun tzu's text is mostly missing. after reading most of the text, i was left largely unimpressed and uninspired... but I read it after I had already read T'ai Kung Six Secret Teachings and Ssu Ma (those two are from the 7 chinese military classics book)

It's not known how much of Sun Tzu's text is missing. A complete text of Sun Tzu's Art of war was unearthed in 1972, dubbed the "Silver Sparrow Art of War", it had a few passages more than the orthodox text, but nothing beyond that in significance. Actually, to understand the Art of War, you need to understand that it is truly unique among the other 7 military classics in that it's make up was that of a formula instead of basic instructions. In this way, it has been applied to many fields.

"Retreat" or the "36th option"-referring to strategy 36 of the "36 Strategies" states that if you are at a disadvantage, you should withdraw to a better location until you have one. Zhuge Liang didn't retreat, he withdrew-there is a difference between the two. Sima Yi's victory over Ma Su was as he himself admitted, easy due to Ma Su's mistake. Sima Yi and Zhuge Liang likely never actually faced off in any other significant battle other than Wu Zhang plains.

我不认为他穷兵黩武，他非常注重外交。从攻心为上，连孙抗曹就可看出他有始至终都对准北方的曹魏。他的隆中对始终是史上最经典的战略布局。
诸葛亮也许太执著统一全国才会连年征战，倾向独裁。毕竟没有外敌，就必有内斗。一丁点的蜀国怎样经的起耗?我觉得他深知他死后蜀国无法延续才会如此一意孤行。

Wrong. You do know that both Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi won and lost about the same battles, right? Also, if it were to fighting between the two, Sima Yi would have the upper hand on Zhuge Liang. Zhuge never really fought a match.
Also, Sima Yi's orders were to protect the north from Zhuge Liang's invasions.

wow...let me explain to you young one. after the sanguo period a man wrote down what happened during all of the years of war. the novel would be revised and rewritten multipule times thus making it..yes a little bit unreal in terms of the details but the gereral plot has remained the same and this was made in 1995 to portray what would have went down about 2000 yrs ago in china.
