So... what I'm hearing is Santana and Dave broke up over the Summer and this is Dave's audition song for New Directions in S03E01. Either that, or this is what Sam heard David singing in the locker room shower!
Best version of this song: best arrangement, best mixage and even best vocal performance, surely better than Deep Purple's. Royal adopts that change of vocal colour in "early in the morning" part which probably makes all the difference. Unfortunately he sounds better if not seen.
Billy Joe Royal did a great job singing Joe South's Hush! It's a joy and honor that Joe South gave his personal blessing to AVM to record 'Hush'. Joe is an amazing songwriter and a wonderful person and friend. After hearing the AVM version for the first time he said, "It made the hair stand up on the back of my neck!" God Bless you, Joe! We love ya!
No matter which version you think is best - This is the guy that wrote the song.

Oh please. Didn't need a reminder of the bad side of the 60's tonite. Not all styles were great back then. lol

May look bubblegummy, but this is the true soul version of this grand song.
Billy did it BEFORE Deep Purple's trendy big hit. Billy's wall-of-noise single is definitive, a true late 60s pleasure.

Deep Purple owns this song. This sounds like Alvin the Chipmunk singing.

This arrangement sounds a lot like something that Tommy James & the Shondells might have done if they had recorded this song.

This is nowhere near as good as Joe South's version. He owns this song.

If I'm not mistaken, parts of this song sound a lot like ''A Day In The Life'' by The Beatles

This version was quite obviously the one on which Blue Swede patterned their '75 cover version (right down to the same key)!
