If anyone tells you this is too fast, DON'T LISTEN TO THEM! This is perfect. Listen to piano rolls made by Joplin himself and you'll hear that he played at about this speed.

there's a recording of Joplin on youtube, playing maple leaf rag I think and its INSANELY fast, who knows what he meant by "fast", fast is different for everyone :)

i don't think the recording was really of joplin. Back then music recording was really primitive, and nowadays its very difficult to get your hands on joplins sheets much less his recordings.

I get so sick and tired of people saying that ragtime players are playing too fast. Maple Leaf Rag was annotated "Tempo di Marcia"--March time. Ragtime is a lively dance tempo. Far too many players play at a speed that makes it sound like a pretty song. The proper tempo is (depending on the tune) 90-120 beats per minute.

This version is right in there.

Well said. When Scott Joplin wrote "not to fast" he meant just that. He didn't mean "play it slow". If a professional runner ran "not too fast" he would still run way faster than I could.

I have to disagree with you. This is not the Maple Leaf Rag. Joplin's speed notation on this one is 'not fast' and almost every other ragtime composer has that same notation on their rags. Some are at march tempo and some are slow march tempo but most are not. I fear you have gotten used to hearing ragtime misplayed by too many people.

I'm going to stick to my guns on this one. I agree that ragtime should not be played too fast. It spoils the delicate syncopations and obscures the harmonies. This rendition doesn't even come close to that point though.

In my opinion, it is even worse to play ragtime too slow. As I said before, it is a lively dance music. Each tune defines its own tempo within rather narrow limits.

Did Joshua Rifkin misplay ragtime? William Bolcolm? Max Morath? Eubie Blake?

Musicians who play the styles of music that follow this style historicaly - learned to improvise the next time around :-) That's the fun of playing music! Putting your 'two cents worth' into the song! A Bluegrass jam is the best example of this. Most pickers play the original the first time around so everybody can get the song. Then you get a chance to show out!

Hey this is not fast - just appears that way. Remember these are semi-quavers he is playing in the right hand so will be 4 times shorter than the beats in the bar. If you you clap the 2/4 beat running through the tempo is not fast at all. If you play any of his rags at moderato they will seem fast but the they are not!

I have 3 different scores in my hand and all is c#,also logicly is like that,if u see all sequences in that part all intervals beggins in half steps (d-c# than f-e than g-f#),hope we think at same part in sheets.

I disagree, the composer often puts not fast at the top of the music. This means moderato is ok. Remember this is in 2/4 time and all the notes are in semi-quavers so I will appear fast because each single beat is divided into 4. If you just listen to the 2/4 beat running through the tempo is not fast at all...
