I agree, excellently performed, but I myself would prefer to play/hear it a tiny bit slower, almost like you are casually strolling through it, rather than it sounding a bit rushed. Well played nonetheless.
A velocidade tá perfeita, cara, não tem nada que mudar no tempo da música. Não tá rápido, tá ideal. Procurei vários ragtimes no youtube, esse foi um dos poucos realmente bons que encontrei, você toca muito.
A titchy bit fast for my liking, but well-performed nonetheless. At least it's played at a consistent speed. Respect to anyone who can play ragtime properly. I wish I could!
If anyone tells you this is too fast, DON'T LISTEN TO THEM! This is perfect. Listen to piano rolls made by Joplin himself and you'll hear that he played at about this speed.
but who is playing is Manoel Carlos not Scott Joplin, and I am not Scott Joplin.I play FAST, because it sounds better and if you don´t like, it is ok !
Hmm... for a while I thought that you WERE Scott Joplin.
Well, now that you're not; thanks for clearing that up.
I agree with Scott Joplin, though, that it isn't right to play ragtime fast. Having said that, I must admit it's great fun. F#¤"% what's right, let those fingers dance!
there's a recording of Joplin on youtube, playing maple leaf rag I think and its INSANELY fast, who knows what he meant by "fast", fast is different for everyone :)
i don't think the recording was really of joplin. Back then music recording was really primitive, and nowadays its very difficult to get your hands on joplins sheets much less his recordings.
I enjoyed it very much at this speed. You make a good point that Scott Joplin can play at his speed and you at yours. There is no right or wrong and I think your excellent playing speaks for itself.
I enjoyed it very much at this speed. You make a good point that Scott Joplin can play at his speed and you at yours. There is no right or wrong and I think your excellent playing speaks for itself.
I get so sick and tired of people saying that ragtime players are playing too fast. Maple Leaf Rag was annotated "Tempo di Marcia"--March time. Ragtime is a lively dance tempo. Far too many players play at a speed that makes it sound like a pretty song. The proper tempo is (depending on the tune) 90-120 beats per minute.
Well said. When Scott Joplin wrote "not to fast" he meant just that. He didn't mean "play it slow". If a professional runner ran "not too fast" he would still run way faster than I could.
I have to disagree with you. This is not the Maple Leaf Rag. Joplin's speed notation on this one is 'not fast' and almost every other ragtime composer has that same notation on their rags. Some are at march tempo and some are slow march tempo but most are not. I fear you have gotten used to hearing ragtime misplayed by too many people.
I'm going to stick to my guns on this one. I agree that ragtime should not be played too fast. It spoils the delicate syncopations and obscures the harmonies. This rendition doesn't even come close to that point though.
In my opinion, it is even worse to play ragtime too slow. As I said before, it is a lively dance music. Each tune defines its own tempo within rather narrow limits.
Did Joshua Rifkin misplay ragtime? William Bolcolm? Max Morath? Eubie Blake?
I never played ragtime in my concerts, and just post more ragtime songs in youtube. MY favorite composer is Chopin, and He the best composer.what I post in youtube is not what I play most.
Someone says "chuck the music"--Ahhh, I'd first consult with Scott Joplin!! (Ha Ha.Long gone) Most ragtimers keep to the "script" when playing after the master! Great job!
Musicians who play the styles of music that follow this style historicaly - learned to improvise the next time around :-) That's the fun of playing music! Putting your 'two cents worth' into the song! A Bluegrass jam is the best example of this. Most pickers play the original the first time around so everybody can get the song. Then you get a chance to show out!
Excellent notation and response...I think you are ready to chuck the music and improvise on you own. Your that talented! Try it! After you get on with the melody and counter part- go to the moon!!
Hey this is not fast - just appears that way. Remember these are semi-quavers he is playing in the right hand so will be 4 times shorter than the beats in the bar. If you you clap the 2/4 beat running through the tempo is not fast at all. If you play any of his rags at moderato they will seem fast but the they are not!
I have 3 different scores in my hand and all is c#,also logicly is like that,if u see all sequences in that part all intervals beggins in half steps (d-c# than f-e than g-f#),hope we think at same part in sheets.
ok, I got the part. That part is at the picture I put in my web. I play what is in my sheet, and it is "C", so, the trouble is with my sheet, not with ME! I did´nt learn wrong, I just played what is written. Probably that is an error in the transcripton. but, I won´t change because of that.
I've enjoyed your "ragtime" renditions very much! This song is in the right "tempo," and played very well!!! We have to remember that ragtime songs were also danced to, and were not played as "fast polka's."lol Keep up the great work!!!
I disagree, the composer often puts not fast at the top of the music. This means moderato is ok. Remember this is in 2/4 time and all the notes are in semi-quavers so I will appear fast because each single beat is divided into 4. If you just listen to the 2/4 beat running through the tempo is not fast at all...
you didn't miss a note . Screw the rest of the negative comments . I like to play the entertainer with the sustain peddle . I don't tell the cook how to make a meal and I also don't tell the piano player how fast they should or shouldn't play a song !!!

maple leaf is an exception to the rule...almost everyone plays that relatively fast...all others should be slower
