I absolutely love this. It has all the right ingredients of poise, fire, sweetness and passion. It's always near the edge of recklessness too, which absolutely suits this piece.
I had a CD with John Ogdon playing this, and that was my favourite rendition of this piece. CDs don't last forever, and I haven't been able to find the recording on the internet. WHAT A SHAME...
this music just saved my life... i am sobbing. i came to listen to it one last time before i... and i realized i would never hear this beautiful recording again.. martha argerich, your gift is unsurpassed. thank you<3
@akumanation I am from Brazil and I personally think this is the best performance of this piece ever recorded. As well, I think Argerich music transcends silly struggles between Argentina and Brazil
Hi everybody, I am a young composer and would like to introduce my composition to all of you! the subject is world war 2 and i've been inspired by beethoven and chopin. How would love to become a great composer but its difficult to enter a music program without "proofs" that you are already doing a great job! I hope you will enjoy it! Thanks a lot :)
From 5:20-5:40, and most specifically at 5:32, there is absolutely no argument that Martha feels the music in her soul more than any other pianist I've ever seen.
When you've got thousands of artists interpreting a composers work over many generations simply playing it true to the score accurately up to speed with a unique interpretation may not be enough.. Argerich isn't ever satisfied following a pathway.. She so often strikes out into the unknown and leaves behind a trail.. She's willing to take tempos others cower from she searches out new melodic shapes and while I love 99% of them she certainly won't please everyone but here you have a true artist
As Oscar Wilde said : "After playing Chopin I feel as if I had been weeping over sins that I had never committed and mourning over tragedies that were not my own"... I agreed with him, but M. Argerich makes Chopin sound happy. Maybe that's what make her interpretation unique.
now i can hear a lot of mistakes in her playing, still i love her and i agree that she can play with amazing virtuosity and great intellectual feeling at the same time.
The bit from 4:30 to 5:20 is the most perfect thing to have existed, ever. It always makes me tear up a little - nothing to do with the mood of the music, just how perfect and transcendent it is.
Argerich is a marvel. She is one of the few pianists in history who can play with amazing virtuosity and great intellectual feeling at the same time. There are some who are one or the other but rarely both!!!
@1Thompsonmusic if her chopin is so terrible why did a panel of distinguished and seasoned experts award her 1st prize in this competition when she was aged 24 for this very performance? whether you enjoy Argerich or not is not really relevant, and questioning someone's intelligence for their opinion on who is clearly the world's greatest living pianist is base and stupid because it is generalisation and only goes to display your own huge lack of enlightenment.
notwithstanding the accepted notion of ms. argerich's place as one of the greatest living pianists, do you think that judges would have awarded her first place in the recently past chopin competition on the basis of this performance?
does everyone else pass their left hand over their right when hitting the Bb in the little arpeggio at the end of the main phrase. I thought it was just me, but seen her do this too. gonna check pollini and sum other dudes
Good, but not as powerful or majestic as Rubinstein's version (which also contains fewer mistakes). There is an outstanding video of Rubinstein playing this piece on youtube. The naturalness of his playing, power, and his understanding of this piece is unmatched by any other pianist.
She didn't bow because 60's Japan just got nuked by the westerners and it was considered commonplace, casual and maybe even proper to disrespect them. Fun fact: Did you know there's no way to say "nuke" in Japanese because they don't have the "nu-" sound in their alphabet? Maybe that's why those Hiroshima folk didn't understand what was comin' 'til it hit 'em! Ha! : sidtube dot com/gallery/168/
@l0nEr Stop trying to patronize me, hypocrite, it's ignorant to make assumptions about how anyone else enjoys music. The "u" you speak of on that "nu" sound is whispered and the "nu" sound isn't one that people start words with. It's an "n" that goes at the end of words. The "nyu-" sound is more like "n-yu-" so either way that's two syllables; thank you for re-affirming what I said. Do you think Albert Einstein said "n-yu-ku?" Well he didn't. He said "nuke." And that's two syllables. Not three.
@idiots2407 Well, that comment isn't nearly as smart or superior as you appear to think it is. It would be illogical to assume that - as a gay guy - his "genitals" played any part in his appreciation of Martha in this video. Sex ≠ sexuallity
In this day and age, I'd be normally expected to be listening to music's modern "great artists": Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, etc. But no, I'm abusing the replay button on this video. On real music. Bravo, Argerich!
A very passionate and fabulous performance of the Heroique; my favorite performance of this piece, by far, on YouTube. And if I may be so proud as to say, it reminds me so much of the way my mom used to play this, it's uncanny.
A very passionate and fabulous performance, my favorite on YouTube by far. And if I may be so proud as to say, it reminds me so much of the way my mom used to play this, it's uncanny.
@1Jiller - Err, VERY difficult! What type of dedication you ask? HOURS upon HOURS a day for YEARS! I have a very good friend - a trained concert pianist (now the head of a Conservatorium of Music) who could not pull this off as well as Martha. (I should say in my friend's defence that she does do J.S. Bach some justice, though). If you are learning piano, keep at it - you won't be sorry, it's a very satisifing thing to be able to do!
Interesting: when the video starts (camera from behind) she is playing a Steinway, but the hands close up (0:10) she is playing a C.Bechstein, and all that with the same dress! Martha is for sure a magician.
It's a shame that many times I click on a Youtube link for some superb performance, like this one, and read hatred underneath the video window whilst listening to the music. I suppose great music will always attract debate but maybe I'm expecting too much in wishing that people would think before launching into childish criticism of genius-level talents like Argerich. She could play a Chopin work backwards and still made it sound musical :-) Music is more than the dots on the page!
@ThoughtGazeCarlos Just ignore idiots.... there's no point in discussing with them. Enjoy the music and share your passion with people that are able to comprehend it.
@1Thompsonmusic LOL You're so obsessed with her, aren't you!? I see your comments on all of her videos, and they always have to do with her looks. I'm sensing a bit of a secret crush, maybe?
@36beachbum Lol what? I don't think my comment was unfair. He seriously is everywhere! And he's always hating on her and her looks. I think Martha is magical for her talent, not her beauty, so one has to say something. :)
@TheDevoshka You should have seen her in the sixties. She wore mini-skirts then----yes sometimes in concert.
This is from the 1965 Chopin competition, which Martha won.
Martha is still going strong. She has a busier concert schedule than many half her age. She prefers chamber ensembles and concertos to solo recitals nowadays.
@MrSofuckingLOL Maybe that piano is BechStainway :)))) Actually, if you look really attent in the beganing you can notice that this video is a montaje. While in the very begining you see bechstein mark, few seconds after you don´t see anymore :))
Her facial expression when the main theme comes back is wonderful.

I don't understand if her piano is a Bechstein or a Steinway... Both names are written, on the front and on the side

@MrSofuckingLOL Actually it's two different pianos. The film is evidently edited.
