Just love it to bits, me and my mate used to get together every morning during the school holidays and watching this with ok panther too then going out to play the whole day through. Am 38 now and just rekindled the friendship after the many years that have passed with my old mate and we STILL talk about this programme and it's part of our lives. Weird how so many people talk about this programme in the same context as my post. Thanks for posting.
in the UK 84/85 ish loved it. Why dont you,the moomins,pac-man,roland rat,top cat, grange hill but huckleberry finn was my favourite. Anyone remember finger bobs? if not type it in youtube search..man the really freaked me out as a kid. Im off to play manic miner ;)
I must echo the remarks of so many others on here. I'm 40 now and have very happy memories of those times back in the late seventies and early eighties. It was a wonderful time to be young. Endless summer holidays, BWX's and great TV programmes like this that had proper stories to them. All this nostalgia brings a joyful tear to my eye... Thank you for uploading.
@crugee i feel the same i'm 42 now and indeed i remember the bmx bikes, raliegh burners, ultra burner, pro and gold burners.i also remember the winters were a lot colder and the summers were always fantastic, plus i remember the arrival of vcr's the first of them were toploaders and the very first arcade machine that arrived in my hometown, space invaders by taito.
@nufto Fantastic. I remember Space Invaders, my favourite was a video game called "Phoenix". I found a "magic" 10 pence piece once which would come back out of the machine but still give you a credit. I played for hours in the arcade at Butlins. I eventually got greedy and tried it in a fruit machine, it didn't come back out...
@nufto We had the first Betamax video recorder in the street. A noisy, clunky top loader. I still remember having a load of my excited friends around and we watched "Jaws" mostly hiding behind the sofa or cushions, in about 1980 I think. I remember the shop starting to rent out videos. They had just 4 tapes to start with!
I didn't grow up with this... Or... I first saw it when I was around 14 and it was just 5 years ago. Anyway, I have made it to a tradition to watch it once every year. But it still give me some fine memories. Thanks for sharing! :D
being a kid in the late 70s and 80s was the best. i loved playing down the woods and beck, making hay dens and tree houses. i loved my zx spectrum 48k playing manic miner but the majority of the time i was out playing. I loved watching huck finn, almost brought a tear to my eye. Im being biased but these were good times to live as a kid
Loved watching this in the summer holidays's during the early to mid 1980's brings back some good memories of my childhood.
Even if I did have all the money in the world, it could not buy me what I want most - A TIME MACHINE TO TAKE ME BACK TO THE LATE 70'S AND 80'S - they were good times.
Brought back memories, this was shown in the late 70's, and repeated in 1982, but does anyone remember the exact dates? i'm certain it was late 1982, possibly october or november.
this was on in the summer holidays of 1984 and 1985 i didnt mind watching it all again. when was this made ?. dont many children climb trees now, thats a bit sad. this was on the bbc i think.
@Thetellurianvortex there was an Aunt Polly too; she may be the one you remember because she was elder of the two. She was definitely the more frightening one.
Im 39 now i remember running in from the back field after playing out all day, starving,i have two kids now i feel so sorry they will never experience the times i had growing up making dens, climbing trees etc....very sad.
Haha, im a 39y guy and I remember this from school holidays.. I remember rushing my paper round so I could get back to watch it.. It had such a big impact on me I used to try and find where the missippi was useing my dads Atlas lol.. Oh this tune chocks me up even now...
@jimmymoss95 yes my friend i wish i could go back to my childhood i am 41 i used to always watch it it brings back memory these days they dont have any thing on in tv like the late 70s and 80s kids are busy on there mobile phones and play station.........

@jacmandora Absolutely brings back fond memories of school summer holidays. If I remember right, like 'Heidi' and 'Dogtanian' the series was so long that it never actually finished before you went back to school!
I loved this show ..every morning about 10 AM during the school summer holidays along with Roland Rat in Kowloon Hong Kong! 1985 what i wouldnt give to re live them days again..
summer holidays 1985 it was on every morning. what will i do today. always remember an episode when the "jeffersons" rode in one morning and wiped out half the family huck was staying with. was scary and very serious stuff.
remember when tom sawyer had his tooth pulled out, by tieing it to the bed and sticking a flaming branch in his face. or did i just dream that. one of the best ever kids shows. !!!
@klisher i totally remember that too. I also remember that she was always threatening to 'skin him alive' and I used to believe that she would actually do it
I LOVED this show!! Ian Tracey is my favourite Huck ever. Huck and Tom were an inspiration to me when I was a kid, I always wanted to be just like them. Building rafts, running around barefoot, climbing trees, fishing with sticks, etc.
One of my favourite shows of the era...the other was Grizzly Adams.
@RetroGirl1974 i came across this a month r so ago..was my favourite childhood programme..all the episodes are posted on youtube ive watched them all since..sad r what..great days
Try looking back more on days that were slower When living came easy and neighbours were friends Paddle wheels turning as kids on the river Went seeking adventure on some pirates den Marbles and fishing and resting and wishing The day would come quickly when they would be men Thats where they came from, the time that they came from No better time to live and to grow Oh thats where they came from, the days that they came from Life was so carefree not so long ago
o.m.g. how brilliant, its still as good as it was all those years ago, in the school holls everything stopped at 9.15 for this show and would not budge. im 36 now and god hearing this tune still chokes me.
So true. Instead of worrying about mortgage rates, oil prices, taxes, credit crunch and all the other bills. It was a case of mmm...will it be Cola cubes, fizzy sherbert, bubblegum or gobstoppers...sigh...

@OldSchoolRasslin id say absoloutely yesssssssssss we loved it iloved how jim was a nice big friend and chokes me as jim was barefoot and racism was a part a big part of the show, but the 2 white kids loved him and sneaked him food really chokes me up.they should do a big scren remake.
I just bought the DVD box set of this series. The special features include interviews with Sammy Snyders (Tom) and Ian Tracey (Huck) as they are now. It's fascinating to hear them talk about the making of this series - and especially about how Sammy still gets Christmas cards from the girl who played Becky Thatcher!
I remember the courthouse scene..........Tom Sawyer - "it was Indian Joe!!!."..de la la la la la la la la laaaaaaa!!!!! Indian Joe leaps out through window! Good memories.
Ahh! Saturday mornings. Brings it all back. Great series. I don't even think the inventors of YouTube were born yet. God, I feel old. I think I'll go and lie down now.
I completely agree with everyone else on here - i'm 35 and I thought it was just me. Such a strangely powerful and emotive piece of music that surrounds so many memories of growing up.
Damn, bring back childhood memories. I used to watch this every morning during the summer. I remember they found all that gold and Tom Sawyer got shot in the leg....sniff.
@easydp That ain't sad. I could remember the first half of this perfectly, but I'd forgotten what came next. I've been on youtube about six months, but just a minute ago I suddenly remembered this show and searched it, not really expecting much, and it was right there at the top of the list. Now I'm gonna do the same with "Why don't you", and all the other stuff that used to be on TV in the summer holidays.
i know i know. i love finding all the old stuff from childhood. Why dont you- i remember that- wasnt a big fan but might just look that one up too. haha. ace. but not before i look up ChokaBlock and that intro in the little car.
I was 10 and 11 when this came out. When I heard the music its like I reversed back in time. Thanks to all who had this uploaded. Same thing happened with the tarzan cartoon of the 80's
When I watched this series on DVD in 2008 it was like being transported in a time machine back to when I originally watched it. It really is the theme tune that does it.
Agree with the people who are saying just hearing this tune chokes them up. I am 34. Powerful reminder of being a kid and watching this back in the early 80s. Never thought to hear it again. Thanks very much.
well the whole series is on here you know. iv watched chocky, chockys children, stig of the dump, the box of delights, moondial, zammo flush his smack away and now this
@defguide75 Me too, bud- remember jumping out of bed on those long summer mornings to watch Pink Panther, Huckleberry Finn and Why Don't You, etc. Happy days indeed, eh. :D
i just bought the dvd. I wasn't sure what it would be like as i last watched this in about 85. i tell you this is brilliant now it just makes you wanna watch the next episode. who remembers Tom and the bible tickets and the characters Joe Harper, Big Jim and Indian Joe?
You can't really get any better than the original by Mark Twain. Great Actors/Actresses and a valiant effort. I watched all of it, and love the show (as short as it was)
Yes, the series itself was probably adapted deliberately to appeal to a children's audience by focusing on the adventures of the boys. I remember in the series there were still hints of dark subjects like racism with the other characters advising the boys they didn't want them socialising with Jim, but the emphasis was very much on the boys exploring and trying to enjoy themselves.
But I don't think adapting the film in this way is a negative thing at all.
out of interest have you rean the book? if not you should. I genuinely read 2 books a week if asked what the best book i ever read is, or to name the one book a none reader should read in their lives i would probably say huck fin. Its has become a symbol of american culture for a reason its simply wonderful and the series, while good, did not do it justice.
Hello, thanks for uploading this, I saw 1 or 2 episodes during my childhood in the 80s in Britain. I remember being really scared when Tom Sawyer and the black man find an old house floating on a river, which seemed ghostly. They find people inside, the blackman tries to wake the people up and realises they're dead, then he and Tommy rush out of the house - it really scared me! I described the scene to my Dad and he thinks the house was on the river after a flood.
Haha, I've been reading the book and all I've had stuck in my head since I started it was this song, barely remembered from my childhood. I mentioned it at a barbeque the other day and almost everyone there joined in the tune, but were hazy on the words. Thanks for uploading.
Hahaha same here ! I was in boarding school back then and i saw kind alike Tom Sawyer i played truant and hung around with another kid i guess i'd call him HuckleBerry Finn
You are spot on - the long school summer holidays mornings in the 80s! I always had a vivid imagination as a young boy and this whole series seemed to relate to that with the boys exploring in the open country. Life as an adult is so much more serious and complicated now!
I definately remember growing up watching this in Britain in the 80s. Think it was on BBC but it may have been ITV. School holiday viewing, dunno if it had been shown during regular kids TV in years earlier though. I think it was the first non-cartoon programme I really got into.
It was on ITV, during Saturday lunchtime in the late 80s (maybe early 90s as well, but definitely late 80s).
Living in London as a young kid back then, I definitely remember watching this on London Weekend Television. Remember, different regions of the UK had different ITV programme schedules back then so it might not have been on everywhere, but LWT definitely aired it.
We can agree to disagree, but im right though. Saturday Lunchtimes on LWT were reserved for Saint and Greavise, and then world of Sport. It was definitely aired during the school summer holidays, along with Why dont you and the Pink Panther cartoon
I think you'll find that World of Sport ended in 1985. I was talking about the Saturday Lunchtimes on LWT in the LATE 80s & EARLY 90's, where this programme did indeed come on. How do I know this? I actually still have an episode that I taped on VHS from way back then.
We can agree to disagree, and you may still think you're right. But clearly it would appear that I'm more correct than you are when you can't even get your facts straight about other TV programmes of the time.
You're both right. It was shown numerous times on the BBC between 1982-1986, both in the afternoon kiddies slot and also in the early morning summer slot. Then ITV/ LWT showed it in the early 90's in the saturday afternoon slot - I also have a recording of an episode from this airing.
There u go Eclipse we were both right you are obviously a lot younger than me as i watched it as a kid in 84, and u watched in the 90s, so im guessing you are 26/27. So i did get my facts right you pompous little twonk, lol
Just bought the dvd box set of this. still a kid at heart ;)

It really is the theme tune that does it.
rchris36 2 years ago
Agree with the people who are saying just hearing this tune chokes them up. I am 34. Powerful reminder of being a kid and watching this back in the early 80s. Never thought to hear it again. Thanks very much.

You can't really get any better than the original by Mark Twain. Great Actors/Actresses and a valiant effort. I watched all of it, and love the show (as short as it was)
erfelgamazig 2 years ago

Its has become a symbol of american culture for a reason its simply wonderful and the series, while good, did not do it justice.
gluepot66 2 years ago
Hello, thanks for uploading this, I saw 1 or 2 episodes during my childhood in the 80s in Britain. I remember being really scared when Tom Sawyer and the black man find an old house floating on a river, which seemed ghostly. They find people inside, the blackman tries to wake the people up and realises they're dead, then he and Tommy rush out of the house - it really scared me! I described the scene to my Dad and he thinks the house was on the river after a flood.
ColumbiaTerrace84 2 years ago
Haha, I've been reading the book and all I've had stuck in my head since I started it was this song, barely remembered from my childhood. I mentioned it at a barbeque the other day and almost everyone there joined in the tune, but were hazy on the words. Thanks for uploading.

yeah, it was Aunt Polly for the most part - for whatever reason, Aunt Sally came in towards the end. Can't remember why/how it was written in.
fleeced 2 years ago
Aunt Sally is Aunt Polly's sister. Aunt Polly sent Tom Sawyer to Aunt Sally's house in the last 2 episodes.

gluepot66 2 years ago 2
You are spot on - the long school summer holidays mornings in the 80s! I always had a vivid imagination as a young boy and this whole series seemed to relate to that with the boys exploring in the open country. Life as an adult is so much more serious and complicated now!

Try looking back more on days that were slower
When living came easy and neighbours were friends
Paddle wheels turning as kids on the river
Went seeking adventure on some pirates den
Marbles and fishing and resting and wishing
The day would come quickly when they would be men
Thats where they came from, the time that they came from
No better time to live and to grow
Oh thats where they came from, the days that they came from
Life was so carefree not so long ago

I definately remember growing up watching this in Britain in the 80s. Think it was on BBC but it may have been ITV. School holiday viewing, dunno if it had been shown during regular kids TV in years earlier though. I think it was the first non-cartoon programme I really got into.
MrDemolitionMan 3 years ago
Wasn't it on after 'why don't you' , during the summer hollidays, that was on the BBC.
buffboydan 2 years ago
Yes I think it was. Happy days!
cryingonion2 2 years ago
It was on ITV, during Saturday lunchtime in the late 80s (maybe early 90s as well, but definitely late 80s).
Living in London as a young kid back then, I definitely remember watching this on London Weekend Television. Remember, different regions of the UK had different ITV programme schedules back then so it might not have been on everywhere, but LWT definitely aired it.
Eclipse2582 2 years ago
Wrong, was on BBC during school summer holidays, after Why dont you
Savillefish 2 years ago
I think you're wrong, but we'll have to agree to disagree. I definitely remember watching on Saturday lunchtimes on LWT way back.
Eclipse2582 2 years ago
We can agree to disagree, but im right though. Saturday Lunchtimes on LWT were reserved for Saint and Greavise, and then world of Sport. It was definitely aired during the school summer holidays, along with Why dont you and the Pink Panther cartoon
Savillefish 2 years ago
I think you'll find that World of Sport ended in 1985. I was talking about the Saturday Lunchtimes on LWT in the LATE 80s & EARLY 90's, where this programme did indeed come on. How do I know this? I actually still have an episode that I taped on VHS from way back then.
We can agree to disagree, and you may still think you're right. But clearly it would appear that I'm more correct than you are when you can't even get your facts straight about other TV programmes of the time.
Eclipse2582 2 years ago
You're both right. It was shown numerous times on the BBC between 1982-1986, both in the afternoon kiddies slot and also in the early morning summer slot. Then ITV/ LWT showed it in the early 90's in the saturday afternoon slot - I also have a recording of an episode from this airing.
gareth110777 2 years ago 3
There u go Eclipse we were both right you are obviously a lot younger than me as i watched it as a kid in 84, and u watched in the 90s, so im guessing you are 26/27. So i did get my facts right you pompous little twonk, lol
Savillefish 2 years ago
Yup, most people aged 30+ will remember this being on every day during the summer holidays, not on Saturdays.
