@Solitemel It's Bcause most of the fairytales that were adapted into disney movies originally had the protagonist having one parent. Also when Walt Disney(the person) lost his mother a few years after he started making cartoons to Carbon Monoxide poisioning so that might have had something to do with it to I'm not sure. I'll do more research about it and let you know.

Well, Mulan and Aurora do have their mothers. And the newest princess, Tiana, also has her mom. In fact, with her movie, Disney inverted it. Her father died instead of her mother.

@adean1993 probably because disney movies are mostly based on fairytales... most of which (if you look at Hans Christian Andersen and the brothers Grimm) have young heroes or heroines who lose their guidance through losing a mother figure.... it's a popular plot for many romantic writers : 3
