I think the first film had a great tone in how it combined the original Mirage Comics and 80's Cartoon Series, but personally I think the 2003 series perfected it.
The 80's series was fun, and in a similar vein SECRET OF THE OOZE was as well (basically being a live-action version of that show) but Ninja Turtles does work best with (as you guys put it) some darkness and the ability to take itself seriously.
I think the 2003 cartoon was the best incarnation. Its kinda ironic that you liked the first 03 show because of the first ninja turtles movie. I liked the first ninja turtles movie because it was like 03 show.
@SickRickJoseph Actually plan on it as part of a special on fan films. I have seen it and I'd like to talk about it a little bit. That'll be some time down the road, but probably sometime this year.
which comic series do you think makes the greatest statement with their themes? x-men with acceptance of difference, spider-man with responsibility, hulk with self control?
as far as I'm consern there are 2 universe for the tmnt the original comic and the original cartoon and everyone else was split from the the 2. my favorite was the Archie comics series
I love the 2003 tas version and the first movie. They were dark, funny, engaging, action paced they had it all. And that is what the tmnt are all about they can not longer be defined by on catagory. Quick question what do u think about Usagi the rabbit samurai. Most people do not know he has his own comic series and it us great abd the tmnt appear in it. How about about u guys talk about Usagi Yojimbo
I think the original live action film had the best tone. Also, speaking of tone. I would love to see you guys discuss what tone you think the upcoming Legendary Pictures Godzilla film should have.
I hear what your saying about the whole motive thing, and I think the 90's Animated Spider-Man series is a prime example. As much as I love that cartoon, I cant't stand how in almost every other episode something relates back to "neoginics" and the "neoginic recombinator". I get that it was a big part of Spidey's origin and the original stories. In the 60's and 70's nuclear radiation was a big thing, but I just want to vomit at the overkill of the motive. What do you think?
Did you hear bout the rummor that the makers of arkham asylum and arkham city may be doing a ninja turtles game ? I think that if this happens it would be a badass game. What do you think vince and cap logan ?
I really like the 2003 series and the flack that series sometimes gets is unfair. The creators did say that it was more like the Mirage comics. Although I quickly found out that some fans didn’t know that Turtles started out as comics. I get why people loved the 1987 series BACK then. But today it feels censored more so than other 80s cartoons, it’s not adventurous or funny, and it has worst version of Rafael period.
I also think the best tmnt stories have strong themes or family, ninjistu martial arts mythology and alienation and humor. I think tmnt actually can be considered as high art, mostly because the characters are based on literary archetypes. The turtles are the protagonist, april and casey are the dueteragonist, splinter is the mentor shredder the antagonist.
I was the one that wrote that question because I wrote about a super hero rewind about turtles forever. Personally I prefer anything that treats the characters with integrity. I've been trying to pitch a very definitive story arc for the tmnt that is dark in tone but laden with a gratuitous violence.
My youtube name is ikonolasification . Love the shows you guys do.
Yeah they did do the rat king but I see your point they definitely have always struggled with making good villains in my opinion. They do have a couple but definitely Shredder is the best. I also think that the first ninja turtles movie is the best and second to me is the 2003 tmnt. love turtles forever as well.
The original comics are known for the dark, gritty, violent tones, but I like alotta people grew up with the 80's TMNT, I think the supposedly new movie and cartoon should be like the 90's movies, set in a dark place, but comical, like the recently rumored ROCKSTEADY TMNT videogame (The guys who made Batman Arkham Asylum/City) it's quite funny, get it, cause "Rocksteady" the bad guy in TMNT, huh see how that's fun-.... Oh nevermind.
I think the right tone would be what Bat-Man TAS did. Action packed, dark, dramatic, with witty dialogue for the occasional laugh. I also don't care for the tone of the older Ninja Turtles cartoon.

TMNT should be dark and serious stories with an ironic, tongue-in-cheek, absurdist edge.
