I think most of the public were aware of the segregation of the jewish , and yes of the wrongful laws stripping of political and largely economic foundations but I don't think a majority of the public were aware of the death camps and extermination. I think most might have felt as you say about the post war Germany but I think most felt that the Jews just needed to be expelled and pushed out.
