  • wtf I just saw the air contort around that bullet...

  • I wasent finding fault with your video infact you back up what I say to a lot of people who carry 7mm mags and 300 win mag to the woods for deer , way too much rifle for anything under 200 yards , I use a 1930'svintage Marlin model 36 30-30 with a fixed 4x scope and consistantly put up .750 groups on paper at 100 yards using remmington 150 grain corelocked ammo I used to use wichester silveertip ammo but its hard to come by in my area these days

  • very nice but thats with only a 110 grain bullet , the normal weight used for deer hunting is 170-180 which are only really effictive to 150 yards tops

  • @newfun61 Did you notice hat I was shooting at a target, and the target was not a deer?

    Setting that aside...

Stop listening to ignorant people, learn how to calculate "effective range" for yourself.

It is generally accepted that it takes 800ft-lbs of energy to harvest deer ethically.

My favorite 110gr FMJ load travels at a speed of almost 2700fps.

Entering the appropriate information in a ballistic calculator, I find that my 110gr load still has 798ft-lbs energy at 200 yards.

  • @lj2justgoto - i'm not criticizing here, i'm genuinely curious - isn't that 2700 fps the muzzle velocity? i imagine that would be significantly slower 200 yards out, no? I'm only an occasional hunter - but i've always used a 160 or 170g 30 30 for dear at 150-200 tops

I don't see any reason why a 110 30 30 wouldn't work on a medium to smaller deer though -especially inside 100y. A 110 is going to put something like a coyote in the dirt for sure...accurate!

excellent post and great video :-)

  • @nialljamesbuckley "isn't that 2700 fps the muzzle velocity?"

    Yes.

"i imagine that would be significantly slower 200 yards out, no?"

Yes. I had said, "my 110gr load still has 798ft-lbs energy at 200 yards" whereas the muzzle energy would be, 1780ft-lbs.

    Thanks!

  • @lj2justgoto -oh i see. ha, reading is for losers

    ;p

  • @lj2justgoto you are absolutely right.....not everybodys effective range is the same....seen a moose taken with a neckshot at just under 400 yards with a 30-30

  • @lj2justgoto it's 1200 ft-lbs that recomend, but yea 800 is accepted for sure. wicked shooting. back in the day they used the heavy bullets so they could put it throu thick bush still hit the target with plenty energy where am from thier for thick bush useally shots arnt farther than 50 yards throu dense cover never even heard of a 110gr for a 30-30 if i was hunting the corn feild or beans I would'ent have a problem with the 110gr more than enough out to 150 yrd.

  • @mrsuperterd "it's 1200 ft-lbs that recomend"

Chuck Hawks is a well respected and highly knowledgeable firearm expert. I got the below excerpt from his site, from the page he wrote on, "The Killing Power Of Big Game Bullets"

"It is generally recommended that a small bore (.24-.32 caliber) rifle bullet suitable for medium size (CXP2 class) game be carrying about 800 ft. lbs. of kinetic energy when it hits."

Every book I have on the subject recommends from 700 to 800ft-lbs.

  • @lj2justgoto yea but you havent read the ontario hunter education manual- preferred-1500 ft.lb. adequate-1200 ft.lb. minimum-900 ft.lb. and you add another 1000 ft.lb for bear 2500 than another for moose 3500.

  • @mrsuperterd "but you havent read the ontario hunter education manual"

I just did, and it doesn't mention that.

    "adequate-1200 ft.lb. minimum-900 ft.lb."

This is where the use of proper English comes in handy. The definition of adequate...

    "barely sufficient or satisfactory"

Sounds a lot like, "minimum" huh?

And you call me a "moron." Sheesh!

  • @mrsuperterd "heavy bullets so they could put it throu thick bush still hit the target with plenty energy"

That is a violation of Rule #4 of Coopers rules for safe gun handling.

    "BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it."

Anyone hunting with me doing that wouldn't be for much longer.

  • @lj2justgoto yea guess your not all that into hunting as thats comon sense and no need to remind anyone just educate new hunters. you never shot at a trotting deer as its ran behind cover? you never wacthed a deer throu bush or took a shot throu young growth? what you hunt just corn feilds and praries? where am from the bush is thick lucky to see 40 yards in front of you or have a shooting lane thats 20 yards long without over growth so if you did'ent shot throu somthing you'd never get a deer.

  • @mrsuperterd You really need to learn to communicate in the written form, (English preferably,) your 'sentences' are gibberish at best.

No I never shot blind at deer, I value the lives of my friends and family more than you, (obviously,) do.

"so if you did'ent shot throu somthing you'd never get a deer"

You are the perfect example of why there are so many fatal hunting accidents. To talk about "educate new hunters" by the suggestion to shoot blind is reprehensible!

  • @lj2justgoto your a moron where did I ever say blind? I said shooting throu bush you know you can still see a deer even thou you cant see his heart and lungs because on being blocked by young growth? so many deaths? maybe where your from, am form ontario numb nuts and we have the best saftey record in all the world. also, my peers, friends and family are worth more than yours anyday of the week thier little buddy as your amercian. furthermore, intelligent people can read poor grammer; you dumb?

  • @mrsuperterd "moron" "numb nuts" "you dumb"

I suspected you couldn't further your argument, and expected you to resort to insults. You are a credit to your country! (last sentence is sarcasm)

    "I said shooting throu bush"

No, you said, "the bush is thick", "thick bush" "thick bush" "throu dense cover " "being blocked". Evidently, not only are you an unsafe hunter, we can add liar to your portfolio.

"Intelligent people" write intelligently, as to not be misconstrued, or misunderstood.

  • @mrsuperterd From your precious hunting regulations.

"Strictly observe firearms storage and transportation laws and observe the rules of safe firearms handling."

    it also says,

"Remember: Hunting carelessly is an offence. Hunters who discharge firearms without due care and attention or consideration for persons and property, are liable to a fine of up to $25,000 or imprisonment - or both. Depending on the circumstances, a person may also be subject to charges under the Criminal Code."

    That's you!

  • @mrsuperterd Expanding on, 'To talk about "educate new hunters" by the suggestion to shoot blind is reprehensible!'

Google the words, 'hunter shoot partner thick brush' to find 2,330,000 reasons why you don't "educate new hunters" extremely dangerous practices in the guise of "commom sence".

What is strange is... you not only vigorously argue against gun safety, but you proudly do it. The phrase "if you did'ent" means you know it is wrong, but killing a deer is more important. Reprehensible!

  • @newfun61 P.S. In my opinion, the most important part of load development is choosing the right bullet for the right task. That bullet's construction isn't designed for deer hunting. These are my varmint/plinking rounds.

  • 300 yard kill shot with an iron-sighted 30-30 lever gun? Impressive.

  • dude, you can see the bullet

  • How bad did that cut your finger?

300 yards...nice shot for a lever gun in 30-30 especially a 110 gr pill. I tries some 110 gr Hornady VMax but had less than stellar accuracy results from my Marlin 30-30 (and never even tried out to 300 yards). Oh well, that same 110 VMax flies great out of a 30-06 Springfield Armory 1903 though.

  • @mongosafariadventure I've used the 110gr V-max touching the lands getting sub-moa accuracy.

  • Nice shot

  • without a scope with a 30.30 you are a good man my grandfather would be happy to go hunting with you any season

  • STEEL? holy $%*@
