  • I see a lot of lighthouses that have both tannoys and diaphones. Any reason for that?

  • The lens at anvil point is tiny compared to the original!

Is it open to the public regularly?

  • @WorldWideLighthouses Yes. See TH website.

  • @hellooldchap Anvil is not open for the 2011 season.

  • spurn and portland bill, lighthouses were built within 11 years of each other! there is only a 9ft hight difference (portland bill lighthouse being higher) spurn lighthouse was designed by 'Thomas Matthews' although i dont know who designed portland bill!

  • Looking through my Portland Lighthouse book, Portland 3 was designed by Sir Thomas Matthews. He was the TH engineer-in-chief. Putting a pic of Spurn and Portland 3 you can see they are almost identical.

  • i know! i just compared two of my photo's of both of these, and theyre almost identical!

at first, when i visited spurn, i thought it looked more like dungeness lighthouse (with the original daymark) the only thing that made me think otherwise, was the shape of the roof!

  • LOL - 3:48

also, do you have video, of the other two portland bill lighthouses?

  • I don't. As they are not TH and one being a private house I didn't bother with a video, just a photo. I hope the residents didn't mind me taking a photo of their house!

  • Thinking about it, the new lighthouse on portland bill, looks Similar to that of spurn point. but mabey thats just how i see it...=D

  • oh - i knew the low light was a bird observatory, but didnt know the high light was a house...

  • Yeah, I can see that. Maybe built at the same time or designed by the same person?

  • i'll have to look it up, although it can be hard to find information on spurn lighthouse.

  • Portland also has a castle that Henry VIII owned

  • Portland is an island. It has little towns on the island. It is a beautiful island to visit and ride the bike around for the entire day.

  • A buddy of mine shot that place with his awesome camera. He emailed it to me and now I have Portland Bill as my wallpaper. The place is beautiful.

  • Mother used to live in one of the cottages there, that was a long time ago

  • We were visiting Portland once , but didn't here the warning and got the fright of our lives !!

  • This is quite wonderful..... thank you...I love lighthouses and the sounds of the ocean...

  • It is sounded each Sunday unless it's foggy, when the proper fog horn will be sounding. There is a phone number you can call to check at the Trinity House website.

  • Ok sorry i saw your other shorter version of this clip and it answers my question :) Is it every sunday throughout the year that they sound the old horn?

  • Is the Diaphone the old foghorn or the new one? I know they changed it and before it was a very low one generated by compressed air inside the lighthouse. I can't tell from your footage (amazing by the way...i was born there and need to get back soon) if it is the old or new (my memory is fading fast!)
