Here's the difference. Japanese media like to constantly throne their players, calling them prodigies with talent granted by heaven, inviting them to variety shows, treating them like Hollywood stars. You almost never see that in China.

The reason is much simpler: China has 1 and a half billion inhabitants, and Table Tennis is the most exercised sport in the people's republic.

@LehmannDaHero Here is the math. Table tennis' table length is 2.74m, I assume you are catching a penalty kick from 12 yards (10.97m). Just divide both range and approximately a 100 km/h table tennis ball smashed equals to a 400 km/h football penalty kick in speed, not to mention that the table tennis ball's diameter is only 40mm compared to a soccer ball which is around 220mm.

Even pro goalkeepers are playing table tennis to improve their overall reflex.
