  • Hi :) why is there grass on the roof, is there some kind of purpose to that? What is the space used for? thank you :))

  • It is realy nice. That is good, that people build and meet in house like this.

  • now you are going to have to get a mower up on the roof, oh maybe just a goat instead.

  • Whut the?... 5 people dislike this? Hmm

  • Fantastic! And a beautiful result.

  • mmmmmm mummy and daddy are loaded so i can play at this eco friendly bullshit till they die and leave me everything

  • @benny1473 lol you dont have to be rish to build a eco friendly house i can build a log cabin with under 100$ in supplys heck i build my cousins current home a 20x20 log cabbin for under 300$ we went fancy on the wndows the logs are free and we dont use nails so dont need em for the few we do use its less than 20$

  • advantages of growing structure inplace include.no change of use of land from agricultural to residencial

    no buying and transporting materials

just seeds or saplings and time

and after 23/12 2012 we will have plenty of that

  • so with a little fore thought..we should be planting ash at metre interval on the circumference of an 11 metre circle to grow to become the main uprights after a few years it should be possible to bend them to the centre and form a dome ..alternatively simply let them grow staight up and place horizontals in the branch forks ..eventually the kids move into the second floor suspending bed platforms grand kids 3rd floor ,ash hits maturity at about 1hundred years and is stonger than oak in beam

  • Is that where you guys smoke dope?

  • Priceless beauty. I love it man.

  • very nice, but you have to cut the grass :)

  • Do the Teletubbies pop out from the top?

  • one of the coolest things ive seen of late!!! great job.

  • outstanding thanks for doing it. Our home is round, straw bale insulated, clay and straw mixture the bales making a 2" ft wall.

  • yes yes very cool!!!

  • six weeks to build this.. very cool!

  • reply to carr869: yes being old slows youdown but needn't actually stop you. This was built by three groups of volunteers, mostly young, who wanted to know how to do it and were willing to put lots of muscle power in. You could get wwoof volunteers to help thin your woods this winter for free then get another lot to help you build a den for free too next summer. Good to let the wood season a bit.

  • That is totally awesome. If I wasn't so damn old I'd start one myself. I have the land and the trees for it. The trees need to be thinned any way in a couple of spots and that would be a great use for them.

  • Beautiful !!

  • What a lovely looking gaff!

  • It is not designed to be lived in, so doesn't have a wood stove, for example, but you could with a few changes. The main problem would be getting planning permission to live in a low impact den like this but in Wales it is just possible if you are willing to keep a very low eco-footprint. I live in a bigger one than this with permission. The bare bones of this policy are in Technical Advice Note 6 issued by the Welsh Government.

  • Now stand in the corner!

  • great house nice vid of her being built, do you need planning for one of these and could you live in it. i live not too far from there

    best regards

    scooter

  • @Michiganette Its got a soothing feel to it right :)

  • We char the posts in a fire then paint with melted bitumen, then in a hole as deep as you can make with an arm. Gravel to infill. For the reciprocal frame stuff please check out the reciframes page on my website thatroundhouse.info. Thanks.

The joints on the wall plate are overlapping elbow joints, so you need to mark them out carefully on a level working surface. Some pics in my other vid Building a Cobwood Roundhouse in Cornwall. Next course next April.

  • 1) At 0.18 when your burying your burying your beams in the ground... traditionally you'd use concrete...(I guess)... could you just use gravel????

    2) What angle does the reciprocal roof need to be at??

    3) I'm worrying about the angles and joints involved in putting the horizontal beams together (the roofplate... how difficult is this??

    anyones help would be appreciated

  • I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hippies

  • zdkezios forgot to put on his sunglasses

  • bloody brilliant gorgeous and wondrous

  • WONDERFUL. Thanks for sharing the video!

    All the best.

  • I want a house just like that ;0)

  • 'Building a Low Impact Roundhouse' by Tony Wrench is available from Amazon.

  • where cam i learn to build that ? any book ?

  • lot of effort for a fire

  • Beautiful!

  • "son please water the lawn" "okay" ::points hose at the roof:: that's a win.

  • Awesome job guys. Anyone know the name of this tune?

  • @Nickodemusodurn its on the end of the video's titles

  • Nevermind got it! Thanks!

  • where can i find an mp3 to this song? it fits the video together perfectly. the house is beautiful.

  • @TheoryIsSpeculation Yes, I saw many, and experimented a lot with succes. But now I am in the Sahara very far away from my farmhouse... I don't want to life any more in the European system... Dutch Systems are inhuman for familylife.. ChildrenRights is to have contact with both parents. The system doesn't reconize me as a father.. I feel very sorry for that system so I fled to the Sahara to be free and continue my action for reform...

  • What a nice house and nice people. Good luck to all of you. Where I can find more info on this type of building?

  • It's beautiful. Have you finished the floor? If so how? If you I may be so bold.

  • 0:54 How are the roof beams secured to the wall beams?

  • nice.

  • need good music? checkout my channel!!

  • this is gonna get one moldi mess after two years

  • Of course! So simple! Get an RV! Buy diesel! Buy water! Buy raspberries! Buy everything! Be totally dependent! Why didn't I think of that!????

  • Why is everything so small?

If you are going to go this small just get and RV and move with the weather.

  • does a person have to water the grass roof in dry weather ?

  • Well-done!

  • Nice natural life. Congratulation

  • A couple of answers on construction - the ends of the posts are charred in a fire to about 20 cm above ground level. These are chestnut posts here so they should last 30 years or more. Sometimes I also paint molten bitumen onto the post feet as well. The yellow pipe is a drainage pipe which goes under the polyfelt and is taped to the plastic/rubber roof membrane. It collects excess rainwater and channels it to one point on the eaves where it could be collected for watering etc.

  • @ToneWrench Thanks, very inspiring.

Can you say something more about the "plastic/rubber roof membrane" roof..

  • i thought roundhouses used wattle and daub (weved sticks and clay, mud or saxon poo) for the walls

  • WONDERFUL...X

  • so if you ran into the wall, would it be a roundhouse to the face?

  • @zdkezios LMFAOOOOO

  • @zdkezios If Chuck Norris was a hippie this would be your roundhouse to the face for having a large carbon footprint.

  • @zdkezios LMAO

  • @zdkezios i wish i could give you 2 thumbs up for that comment. i guess i'll have to create another account.

  • Congratulation!

    Beaultiful!

  • WHOA!! I WAN LIVE DER

  • This is a truly beautiful building. Does some lucky person live there now?

  • I THOUGHT I had seen it! Denmark Farm! Cool..

  • A thing of beauty! I'd certainly be happy living in that.

  • what was the purpose of the yellow flex line under the EPDM? drainage?

  • build me one!

  • I think human beings think now too much of permanance. This type of house was meant to last a good many years, but a new one could be built in a fairly short amount of time. This kind of house was part of nature. Some more durable forms of construction, such as cob (which this house is partially built with), create houses that last hundreds if not a 1000 years.

  • VERY NICE COMMUNITY! Well done, also after finishing, the Party together made it UNIQUE, im very IMPRESSED, ´cause such kind of CONNECTED People!

  • were is this hause

  • Stunning building. We should all get experience of doing this - have a feeling we'll be needing it in the future!

  • @ecraftsmen YES WE WILL need such (old is not bad sometimes) Innovation and we need it a soon as possible!!!

  • this is really amazing

  • OMG I think this is the most amazing thing I have seen for a loooooong time. Congrats, very cool. I really want one!

  • I love it. I absolutely love these kind of buildings.

Did you have to get any special kind of permit from the local council?

    Rob

  • the knight templar = I said you people need to be honor for doing the right thing.building that roundhouse. today builder are lazy.!!!!!!!!! cann't do math or read a true basic blueprint.!!!! but they say we are freemason some say masterbuilder, master carpentry that are not.!! but you all are

  • as an organic builder for over 30 years i find your structure very beautiful and pleasing, congrats on your accomplishments....how long do you expect the poles buried in the ground to last????....aloha, forest

  • Ouch! I accidently misspelled (due to a typo) Stonehenge. I hope I spelled Yurt correctly. *cringe*

  • In the beginning of construction, it reminded me of Stongehenge. At the end, it looks like a very fancy Yurt. The roof is my favorite part. I guess that is because growing up our garage had grass growing on its roof as designed by the architect. Oh, memories! That was a very interesting video. Thanks.

  • looks like a chia pet lol

  • Much love and respect. Hope you enjoying living in peace. Thanks for uploads. ONE LOVE :)

  • Gorgeous house, what was the yellow hose thingy ???

  • nice.

  • I saw that you did something with the base of the wood structure to preserve.. Did you burn them? My compliments for your building... I'm a builder too and I'm busy to make a heater in my farmhouse..

  • a very pleasing stop frame pictorial. This was so much nicer than video and accomplished so much more. A great little building too, Thank you for sharing.

  • Beautiful

  • How did you keep the posts from rotting?

  • Love the tune as well as the house. What is the tune please.

  • exelente ..muy bueno y bonito!!

  • The community spirit is inspiring in this video. These people are determined to be eco friendly no matter how much work it takes.

  • Well done makers of this film and all those involved in the project.

  • wow!

  • Whereabouts in in the good ol' heartland of Wales did you build this mighty structure?

  • It's Arts "C'est de L'Art!!!" Merci !

  • thats the coolest thing ive ever seen

  • Wonderful!

  • WOW!!!! I want one of them :) Very nice

  • Very awsome!

  • Amazing

  • Wow, that's beautiful.

  • Formosan, Drywood and Subterranean termites are quickly becoming a problem throughout Europe. This house needs a healthy dose of Fipronil to keep them at bay.

  • @arbonac termites do not, repeat do not, live in Wales.

  • That was awesome! And the fellowship of building together like that - interesting workshop you all had. I had some similar experiences with three of my rustic homes I built.

  • @arbonac sorry, clicked the wrong button by mistake. did not mean to vote down your reply

  • what did you put on the roof before the sod?

  • straw and raw wool, geotextile called polyfelt,

rubber pond liner, more polyfelt with a spiral drainage pipe stu

taped to the rubber, then turf.

  • @ToneWrench

that's a thorough response. cheers mate.

I'm tackling a back-garden conversion this summer and researching this stuff is the MOST fun.

  • @mynamesdan reply starts ' straw...'

  • So beautiful! I love the bottle designs in the walls!

  • What was used for mortar?

  • @carp1844 cob - 3 parts sand, one part clay, 1 part chopped straw.

  • And if you get cold you can always just set it on fire. LOL!

  • Jedna sibica i ode sve bestraga :)

  • It's gorgeous!!!

  • Grüße aus der Oberlausitz!

  • Nice work! :)

Makes me think about alternatives for my this-moment dream - a wooden log house.

Because this one you built is much cheaper and looks cute. I like also that it hasn`t corners inside :)

  • thats EXACTLY what i was just thinking! its a funny old world

  • very nace green roof

  • I'm glad to see you used cob as a mortar. Or is it plain ole mud?

  • Great building. What about the wood? Can't the termites and insects find their way into the house through the wood. Won't it rot?

  • damn..that is a really sweet shelter you all built. .

  • very cool. i've been wondering about this type of building.. what do you do to keep the wood from rotting? how does it hold up to the elements?

  • I've heard the best wood to use is locust or poplar, because they both harden as they age.

  • @dragonracer76 it the point for it to last 200 year?

  • wondefull, gives me some good ideas to build me a home.

  • I'd live there.

  • Work Of Art ,3 Cheers !

What Please, is the yellow pipe for wrapped upon the roof & how does it function ?

    Bond

  • I feel so blessed to of seen this house's making. What a wonderful way to form the walls!
