They didnt "take a step back". Having no back plate allows for better cooling, cards with back plates usually run hotter because the heat is being contained to some degree.

@R3APERvsTYETREE in today's world all newer motherboards that support sli will support crossfire, they might not say it on the packaging, because they are most likely Nvidia partners so they wotn advertise ATI features such as my P55 FTW board from EVGA. One other thing i would like to mention is ATI cards can go quad on any card from the 3XXXX series up as long as you have room on your mother board.

its a double thick cooler but the ati 5970 card itself is about 13" long so its about 2 times as long as a 5770 so it will only fit in 3 full size cases or with modifications to a standard case.

The clocks are higher on the 275 but it does have less vram but this will not effect the card at 1900x1200 and below only at higher resolutions which would most likly be unplayable on a single gpu 275 or 280. So yea id get the 275 its currently the card thats best bang for buck, cheaper in most cases than the 4890 and faster, also comes with lifetime warrenty and cover for overclocking and modding. Overclocking and modding only with evga and xfx and maybe bfg.

Actually I'm pretty sure the GTX 260 is the BEST BANG for the BUCK card along with the ATi HD 4870, both going for less then $200 where I live and giving awesome performance in any game with 1680x1050 and lower resolutions, I have a GTX 260 Core 216 and I got it overclocked faster then a GTX 275 and damn close to a GTX 280 performance wise!

all nvidia 8 series and above cards have a built in physx card which is enabled through the nvidia drivers. if you google it you should be able to find the latest physx drivers. It is also posiible for you to use a physx card aswell but it is pointless if u are running a physx compatible gpu

2) U can't beat 2 GTX 295 now when EVGA released the new EVGA x58 Classified "Limited Edition" Motherboard. Yep it sure does, the ATI 4870x2 has 2.o gigs of memory though if you want to get picky, but the GTX 295 still runs most games with a average of 15-20 more fps then the 4870x2 does, also the higher the resolution, the more does the GTX 295 out perform the 4870x2.

They took it off cus it had no purpose, the other cards had backplates because the memory was on the backside of the card so it acted as a memory heatsink. Now theres no memory there, therfore no backplate/heatsink.

I said 240 which is correct it has 240 per card. if it has 480 then i have 720 stream processors with my 3 gtx 285 which we all knowe isnt right, if sli is involved you really only include the specs from one card you dont add them together. The only thing i said wrong was 1796 memory when it really has 896mb.
