  • nice video of my favorite part of the country - the Mojave! - Thanks for sharing!

  • You got to do it in the right car too, 1962 lincoln for me.

  • I spend about 3 weeks a year out here (we'll just say Amboy) buy not really. I like to look for old cars. I drive the 66 some, just depends on how much time there is.

I'm a Hoosier and I like my home but some times I look up at that night sky on so quiet a night and think why go back.

  • I like the old route 66 ,raised on that road , all those rock signs travelers left over the years, I need to photograph them! great video! I am talking about the back way to laughlin through 29 palms.

  • I like the old route 66 ,raised on that road , all those rock signs travelers left over the years, I need to photograph them! great video!

  • Wow! Thanks for uploading this! I sure do miss running down in the desert southwest! Especially on parts of the actual route 66 itself. You did a great job with this NB!

  • bagdad cafe!!!!!

  • Lol poker for dummy's!

Very nice video, im planning to drive the route 66 as well over a few years. I've driven complete australia around, 25000kms, amazing views. I think route 66 is even more magic, like in the movies.

U live only once, so do whatever u want to do! :-)

  • The only things an old person regrets is not the things they've done - but those they didn't do....

    I SAY GO FOR IT!!!!

Hope you have a safe & pleasant adventure. :-))

  • Route 66 is a fine route that draws a lot of tourists. It does have quite a bit of history, and generated no little history of its own. I've done about 200 km of it SW of Chicago and wish I could do more.

To see America, though, consider driving the Lincoln Highway from San Francisco to New York. It's longer, older and connects more history. The America you see in movies is concentrated along Route 66. The America that most of us live in is better seen from the Lincoln.

  • Fascinating...

Thank you for sharing this info about Lincoln Highway. Gonna put it on my bucket list fer sure! ;)

  • my favorite song was filmed here!

  • It's an awesome song isn't it?

  • its by W.A.S.P. Wild Child

I'm the same way - love to travel, but we can't always do it in real time - so I LOVE watching others vids, esp on their road trips...

  • hey what song is this?

  • End of vid has info on both tunes...

Actually, I just got back from another trek thru that area - stopped at Bagdad Cafe - they start up the first tune as tour buses arrive...group from France arrived shortly after I did...it was beyond words to be in there as the first song was playing...:)

  • Gorgeous! Beautiful! Haunting! and I loved "Bagdad Cafe!" I too traveled through part of that area in my youth. I found your video after making a video entry for the Mojave part of my adventure! A lot more brush, yucca type grasses and sage brush, than I remembered!

Very strange landscape for an easterner like myself! But hauntingly beautiful! Your video does it justice! Thanks for sharing that!

    Peace,

    \A/

  • Really enjoyed this video. I am very

familiar with the area between Barstow,

Vegas, and Needles, and have never

seen a saguaro cactus in this region. I have only seen them southern Arizona

or the parts of California close to extreme

southern Arizona. But love the video,

    nice work!

    Trucker Steve

  • The first minute of this shows saguaro cactuses...not a part of the Mojave Desert then. Maybe somewhere in Arizona?

  • I love you Quannah N. from mojave. Navajo Jasper.find me.

  • i live near route 66 its a great route priceless views!

  • All the plants you saw growing that vast, boring stretch of desert grow wild. I don't know that you'd say they were all native as in they'd been there since the ice age or anything, but they grow there quite happily. God, I'm glad I moved away from the mojave. Brown...tumbleweeds...dust storms...Blech.

  • Very good, emocionante... Gracias

  • Route 66 is a icon to Americas Highway Systems. I respect all the highways and Route 66.

  • Took the family from L.A. to Johannesburg/Randsburg,a few years back.NOT a trip to make with kids in the car.they liked the jail though.

  • Seriously :p

  • Hey great video, who sings this version of this song. I know it's from the movie but rather then Google it I was hoping you could tell me :)

  • Next time you're on the Mother Load, be sure to check out old town Daggett, grab a cool shake at Dairy Queen in Ludlow, hike up a prehistoric volcano at the Amboy Crater, pose in front of the legendry Roy's Cafe in Amboy, grab a bite to eat at the Chambless market, make a quick detour at Essex to check out the eerie Mitchell Caverns, a quick stop at Goffs to explore the historic Goffs Schoolhouse Museum, reward yourself at Needles by taking a dip in the Colorado River!

  • Thanks djrun, next year when I make the treck, I'll have to follow your advice & check out more! Sounds fun, may even give it a go sooner. :P

  • I really enjoyed this. I have traveled the area from LA to the Grand Canyon, from Reno to Casa Grande, Vegas to Yuma, and stopped at the Hoover Dam as well as Death Valley several times. I love it! I did Route 66 through Arizona in my '64 Cadillac back in '99. Thank you for bringing back some very good memories!

  • Wow Andy! Sounds like an awesome trip! Love Grand Canyon, never been to Death Valley (yet)

BTW - sounds like ya got a movie script going there -

"Route 66 [through AZ] in my '64 Cadillac" Love it!

  • Alas, the Cadillac's been gone since 2002... "Route 66 in my

plastic minivan" doesn't quite ring with the same tone...

  • Plastic Minivan - LOL

    RIP Caddie :(

  • Thoroughly enjoyed this, Ali. Amazing rock formations and a steady hand on the camcorder. Haven't encountered anything like this landscape in my own limited travels. Magic. Really liked how you used the stills so effectively. Great music and wonderful to hear the theme to "Route '66" after so many years. My sister had a major crush on George Maharis.

  • Wow - thanks for all your kind words Doug, so glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, when I found theme from Route 66, knew I had to use it! Although I so love the first song...

so it ended up longer than I'd planned. George M was a cutie, but a real devil. :P

  • Glad you had that cameo at the end!! Haha! It was good to see you. Well done with this video! One of the shirts I'm selling on eBay right now is from the 'Route 66' clothing company!

  • Hi Maria! Just finished playing catch up with your vids. Yeah, this one took a long time to put together (way more tape/editing than I thought). Yeah, bet Route 66 stuff sells fast, huh?

  • An Excellent Video again, we should go for another drive soon. 5 Stars from me cos they wont let me rate it 10.

  • Thanks Phil, stuff moving fast doesn't show well on YT. :( Saving grace is the music IS good. :)

Next drive - we'll go slower. LOL

  • o0o0o0o0o I like the sound of that <grins> Well hahaha I am old so need to go slow, but the video is great.

  • so old! I saw your mug - you ain't that old! :P

  • I am. That was a new paint jop hehehe ;_;

  • new paint job! LOL

  • Yesh and it was expensive too hahaha

  • first and foremost, this is excellent. that shot of the house with the mountains flying behind it is some cool video. also, is that jack palance?

  • Thank you AVDJ, glad u liked it & yes, that is Jack Palance, he was one of the actors in the "Bagdad Cafe".

  • "Is an encounter with vibrations

so deep that now, I can not,

I do not wish, it is not possible

to blow them to the wind.

In your eyes I can see sparks,

more than stars, much more brilliant,

in your eyes I can see

    a constellation...."

This awakens the ghosts that haunt Pappy on lonely roads of the west his ancestors, which will not leave him alone...

  • Wow, that was beautiful. I'd almost forgot I love to drive - but give me an open lonely road & the spirits sing...

Thank you for stopping by Pappy.

  • Thanks for the trip :)

  • It's all about the trip ;P

  • This was great! I almost felt like I was watching a feature film! 5*

  • Thanks Sheryle, glad you liked it. (you're not too far from the first leg of it)

  • Actually, I just researched The "route"! We traveled it in the very early 60's to CA. I was 5. I was thinking of recreating it, but alas, most is gone!

  • Actually there are still chunks of it all along the way. I'd love to give it a try. Planning a road trip (possible in fall) from CA to (at least thru AZ) Did you know the animated film cars was based on Route 66?

  • Check out the Harley URL in my description - they have nice itinerary PDF with their stops along the way. Was very interesting. Photos also.

  • Very nice video, loved the music too.

  • Thanksd sketchmaiden, yep - I think the images would be less than zero without the music! (too blurred, through YT) but it is what it is...

the road has soul & the music shares it. :)

  • Memories! Thanks! Lived in Lancaster for a time! Miss the Mojave.

  • Memories can be fun, but after living 14 years in the desert, all I want is a nice short visit...LOL

  • That was great- thanks for the memories! I spent my honeymoon in Sedona and the Grand Canyon, then home along route 66, but at the time we didn't have a video camera. thanks for this!

    poker for dummies LOL

  • You're welcome Lesley, was hoping it'd bring back memories! Sedona & Grand Canyon, now you talk about GREAT spiritual places!

Yeah, SO was not raised in the proper home environment! LOL Never traveled much, can't drive a stick shift & never learned how to play cards. Poor baby...

  • no stick shift? auughh!! LOL

  • oh I have a stick shift, he's learning to drive it. (no stick shift for dummies book though :)

  • The minute I saw the thumbnail for this vid, I started singing, Get your kicks on Route 66...lol I used to travel that route a lot as a kid. I haven't been to Laughlin in years! It looked so different! Beautiful video, Ali! Now I just HAVE to see Bagdad Cafe! I haven't seen it yet. :-)

  • Yeah, Laughlin has really grown up since I first went there in early 80's. (not as crowded & crazy as Vegas) Let me know how you like Bagdad Cafe.

  • Nice. I traveled Route 66 many times as a child. My mother had a wandering spirit and it seemed we were always going across America on this route.

  • me too! my dad was the type that never stopped for anything, so I have these memories from the

    backseat- of-the-car perpective

  • Must be a mystery gene in dad's, mine was the same way!

  • Hey to the Goddess of YT! Wandering spirits can be a mixed blessing - but aren't we lucky in the long run?

    If I could, I'd do the whole 2400 + miles on a Hog! :P

  • now THAT's a great idea|

  • NiteBlogger~ Yes we are lucky in the long run. At the time, I was upset about leaving my friends behind, each time, everytime, but these journey's helped shape me as a VERY VERSATILE adult. On the Hog...oh my aching ass. =0 But it would be great fun!

  • versatile artist - helps us think outside the box :)

rode from Nashville to Knoxville on back of bike to 1982 World's Fair (mostly on back roads) ars was aching a bit - but oh the memories! LOL

  • Oh Ali, I can't tell you how beautiful this was. I loved Bagdad Cafe, and the music gives a soul to your images. I've been wanting to rent the Grapes of Wrath for ages, after this I think I'll finally do it :)

  • Thank you Paola, I agree - the images would be nothing without the music...as to Grapes of Wrath, I recently bought the book (hadn't read it since high school). I'm ready to see Bagdad Cafe again! That song now haunts me! LOL

  • The Grapes of Wrath film has today been shown on Sky TV here in the UK and is to be shown again this evening at 11pm on Classic Films channel.
