take the train towards 95th/dan ryan and get off at the Roosevelt and State station and walk about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile west along Roosevelt and cross the river and you will be over the yard. The first set of tracks you cross before the river is the metra rock island to la salle street station. As for the area it is safe but if you go down there at night i would exercise some caution but i have never been bothered before and never have felt unsafe in anyway.

Were the Amtrak trains at Roosevelt Rd.? What's the best way to get there on foot without getting robbed?

Roosevelt road is relatively safe and is easy to access. What you want to do is grab the red line subway on state street in downtown.
