it is true that mainstream hip-hop is "real" in the sense that some people like it and listen to it, but not so because most mainstream rappers are in it for the money and therefore rap about superficial things (money, girls, clothes). Underground rappers tend to rap because they love it and want to get their message out.

J Smooth excellent point. Now my reasoning for posting this as "real hip hop" goes as follows. First I never expected this video to get featured, the fact that my digital camera in a small instore show got 30,000 views is beyond anything I expected, however I was getting a lot of comments saying "This ain't hip hop it's just white people trying to be black," because most of the audience on Youtube probably doesn't go dig records, hit up all the underground shows,

Now I realize that's hip hop, but this is from a level that is not based on money, they are doing this for the passion and love of the music, not because they have a huge record deal and obligations to the shareholders to produce money making music. I feel this is more "real" because it's at the ground level of where hip hop started. The love of the music.

This is a very nice clip, but it's not any more "real hip-hop" than Lil Jon or 50 Cent.. The tendency towards that sort of elitist framing can only serve to alienate people, and help keep underground scenes from reaching a wider audience.

Just cuz an artist doesn't do the kind of hip-hop that suits our personal taste doesn't mean it isn't "real" hip-hop, or that fans who don't share our tastes aren't real hip-hop fans.

doesn't matter where any types of music started. it doesn't mean that only african americans are good at it because Grand Master Flash started it. him and a lot of other african americans. but that doesn't limit "rap" to just them. just like rock is not limited to just white people. and hip hop, and pop. any race can sing anything no matter where it originated from. you can't deny that.

I did see a lot of racial slurs in here when I recently got bombarded with comments thanks to this video being Featured. It's silly to think that we are still caught up on who does what kind of music, when it's been known and proven that there are talented artists of all ethnicity. By the way, I'd stick to saying DJ Kool Herc helped hip hop emerge into a style of it's own. Flash comes a bit further down the timeline, but still the most amazing man I've ever met.
