The music for the Underground Waterway, 'Nightmare', was also used in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, in the Catacombs, where you face Alucard, as a boss & potential spirit-helper.

That is because the current Castlevania games have moved away from the simple sidescroller of the 8-bit & 16-bit eras.

They have been assigned names, like "Castle-roid" and "Metroid-vania" by fans.

You're not supposed to be there. Go back to the nearest teleporter and warp to the point nearest to the chapel. From that teleporter, go up and then left, taking the next pathway down. There is a broken statue there that allows you to enter the Underground Gallery to kill the Zombie Dragons. After that is finished take the door underneath the entrance to the Machine Tower(which is basically the entrance to the castle.) Push a box you'll find that leads to the Underground Warehouse.

After you defeat Death in the Underground Gallery, continue left to a room with an item, called Cleansing.

This will purify the poisonous water in the Underground Waterway.
