I love how you said you were a "semi-organic" gardener because I say the same thing :-D I live only seven miles from the Atlantic ocean here in Florida, and our soil has no clay in it, so fertilizer is a must since nutrients leech out of it so quickly. Organic fertilizer is too expensive. But I also never use pesticides.
The plastic netting worked out great! I had a poor crop of beans but that wasn't the nettings fault though. You have to handle it fairly carefully or it'll tear but it's by far the easiest method I've yet found for providing bean support.
Blinkazoid, you definitely went through alot of work for those beans. Amazing and very cool! I sure hope you keep doing updates about your garden. I definitely want to see it grow throughout the season and into harvest. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Cookie!!! My first bean broke through the ground just a couple of days ago. My seeds have taken about 3 days longer than average to sprout because we've really had a cool spring so far here. Veggie goodness is just around the corner though!
I wouldn't want to live in a house I built either, LOL. The bean netting thing turned out well though and was quite sturdy once I got it up. My hoe is broken at the moment. I'm getting my brother to weld it back together when he gets a chance. Ya, it would have been tons easier to dig a trench with a hoe and then cover it back up, and that's how I usually do it with beans but for some odd reason I didn't do it that way this time.
To sharpen their whiskers:) Actually from what I've read they have some sort of glands in their cheek area and when they rub on stuff it's puts their odor there and it's like they're claiming the object as *their* territory.
Half runner beans? Hmmm - are they for monoped people who play hopscotch? Weather looks great - we had a day like that this week but winter has arrived now
Wow, if I ever see a one-legged person playing hopscotch I'm getting my videocamera out whether it's politically correct or not, LOL. The weather's been pretty sunny but it's still not as warm as I'd like. Upper
60's for highs and mid 40's for lows on most days. We should have a big warmup very soon though. According to Bradthunder he has two seasons. July and Winter, LOL. Actually I don't know where the half runner beans get their name from.
Wow!!! Robert, that is fantastic. What an ingenious idea. The beans will definitely climb that. I remember last year how long it took you...that's an all-day event. How great. Looking forward to seeing how it goes. I'd kill for that property. Hey, use Fertrell...it's organic and wonderful fertilizer. 42?? Our low is like 72 now...bleh. 42 sounds great! Thanks for the great video.
After posting this vid I actually ran across another video on YouTube with someone using the exact same type of netting for beans, (although his was Blue Lake Beans) so I guess it must work OK. And ya, it's been an awfully cool spring here. It's supposed to be 42 *again* in the morning and then 45 on Sunday morning. It slows the veggie growth down though. Everything's looking good though. The cucumbers started coming up on Friday, but the beans haven't emerged yet.
LOL, Just getting some vitamin D from the sun:))) I've used newspapers a few times in the past. It works really well. However in a vegetable garden I've never liked the idea of it because it puts a certain amount of ink into the soil which wouldn't be a factor with the sunflowers unless your eating the seeds. I'm probably too picky about such things:) Cont.
Some people are germophobic. I'm chemicalophobic... Which is why I don't like things like candles, or air fresheners or potpourri. Breathing in crap you don't have to I'm convinced causes all sorts of maladies.
Nope I've never used pesticides although it's very tempting to do so on the beans because of the Mexican Bean Beetles which are quite a bit of work to manually keep under control. I wouldn't have had any bug problem with the peppers and tomatoes whether they were in the tent or not. The tent was because we've had a LOT of nights in the low 40's the last couple of weeks.
Squishing the Mexican Bean Beetles is a pretty big job every summer. And to think, they weren't even any of them here 15 or 20 years ago. Damn migratory pest:( I'm pretty safety conscious when it comes to my cats. I never plant anything in the lilly family because that's more poisonous to them than just about anything else. Even marigolds are a little poisonous to them.
i really really enjoy your gardening videos... we use poles to grow runner beans... i have never seen these nets... and when the beans are ready to be eaten... i do want some fresh bean soup...i'll make it... you supply the beans :-)
Thanks Starlight:) Expect your cyberbean shipment in about 7 weeks:) It might be a long download time though, LOL. It took me forever to find the netting online. I put the link to it in the description just now. I've seen pics online of people using poles but never have seen or tried it in person. I do sometimes put beans in soup with lots of other things but have never made bean soup. It's bound to be good made from half runner beans though!!!
we over here eat rheinische bohnensuppe :-) now this is made with only runner beans and some potatoes and herbs and cream and stuff :-) but mostly beans and i love it... if you really want to give it a try i ll post the recipe...
I'm not sure if I'd ever get around to actually making it. I'm pretty slack about trying out new recipes I'm afraid. Sounds like it might be interesting though. I never have any herbs around however because I pretty much just cook with salt and pepper and don't get too technical. Don't let that stop you from posting a video of your recipe though. I'll take a look at it. I've got a recipe somewhere here for yeast rolls that I've been planning on making for about 5 years, LOL.
oh I love white half runner beans and I have no idea why but nobody around these parts of NC sell them all I can buy is string beans that are real skinny with no beans inside them hardly. Your going to have a nice garden. I look forward to watching it grow with you. :)
White half runners have always been my favorite. No other bean seems to come close to it in flavor. A lot of people will plant things like "Blue Lake" because the yield is so good and they don't have to string them, but they taste like crap in comparison to the white half runners. They do occasionally have the white half runners at the farmers market and once in a great while at grocery stores here in the western part of the state.
Wow, that was so much easier than last year. I like beans but withou that net, I would never put forth such effort for any vegetable. Babs did great prep work for the tomatoes.
Yep, it was leaps and bounds easier than last year (assuming the beans are able to climb the mesh OK) It's kinda weird, a long time ago I used some regular metal fencing for the beans to climb and it seemed like they did OK. Then when I tried it the next year they did a poor job climbing it and I had to wind up tying some lengths of string to the metal fence to give them a foothold. I'm hoping I don't have to do that with the netting. Babs has to leave her mark of ownership on everything, LOL.
Good luck with the planter boxes Jason! I've never sold any produce before, although the one year when I had a bumper okra crop I'm sure I could have made a few buck doing so. Ever since then I've barely had enough okra for me to eat. I haven't planted any in several years but am going to do so this year.
Nope, I'm very health conscious try very hard not to get sunburned because it's very bad for the skin. I like to go without a shirt outside for a little while each day because it's supposedly good for you as it creates vitamin D. It's not good to overdo it though. I put a shirt on later on in the video to *prevent* a sunburn. I hopefully will get my tomato/pepper vid posting by the wee hours of Friday or Friday evening at the latest.
I buy it in big tubs and it's organic as well. That's all I use, either mixed in the soil or I now put a couple of handfulls in my water butts and if nothing else, it's a nice little twist on mother nature's plan to put the shit into the butt!
And in keeping with that tone and what with you being an expert in this field, what would you put down if you wanted to keep the 3CoolKats out of a particular bed or area of your garden? I have one who is using mine at his... convenience!
Chicken shit would definitely be better than putting fertilizer out. I don't have anywhere to buy it though. Fertilizer kills the worms which isn't good. Last year I did make a manure tea and water my plants a few times with it which seemed to work out pretty well. I'm no garden expert. I only play one on YouTube, LOL. Although my cats do use my garden as a litter box on occasion they really don't seem to do much real damage. I guess it's because my garden is pretty large and it's no Cont.
big deal if a plant or two here and there gets damaged. The only thing I can think of, aside from putting up some sort of barrier which would be a pain in the butt to do, is to provide the cats with something they find preferable to your plants, such as some nice soft bare patches of soil for them to dig in instead of where your plants are, and a few scratching posts for them to rub on and claw on. My cats also love to claw on landscaping timbers which are laying on the ground.
Homegrown veggies are the best!!! It's a shame they don't just magically appear though, LOL. I started to plant nothing but tomatoes this year but I would have missed all those other veggies. Best of luck if you plant any. I'm sure you could make a much more humorous gardening video than me!
That was my dad. He's briefly appeared in a couple of my vids before. Once in a Chinese restaurant where I show the fish and once in a mall where I showed a wood burning furnace.
Thanks MR. This thing was a bear to edit. Moviemaker kept acting up and I had to split it into about 4 parts to get it to publish. I'm sure you'll make up for lost time after you get into your new place one of these days!
Thanks Bryan!!! Moviemaker was a bitch on this one because I added in such a hodgepodge of speedups. It took far longer to edit it than it did to do the gardening in the first place, LOL.
Hmmmm, I wonder how many Poles it takes to plant a garden, LOL. Actually one or two of those poles were from when my bean row was longer. I have other stakes laying around which I use for various purposes including holding tomato cages down.
If at first you don't sow seed, then try and try again.. :) I've just mowed the lawn, that's enough gardening for the next two weeks.. but my mother mentioned something about a list of thing sto do! Guess I have some digging to look forward to.. :)
Ahhh yes, I'm sure she'll get every ounce of labor out of you she can while your there, LOL. You'll wind up being thankful to return back to England so you can get some rest!!!
