Quitting smoking is overrated. I used to smoke regularly for two years when I was in college, and quit soon as I realized that my work pressure at my subsequent job was increasing my daily count of cigarettes.

I quit smoking instantly without a second thought, and it's been a year now. People will quit when they really intend to. Forceful measures will never work!

My best friend recently started smoking... We're 16. She smokes a couple cigarettes every couple weeks or so. I'm worried about her. She doesn't want to stop because she said since she does it so infrequently it's not a problem. What should I do?

She also thinks it will help her lose weight (she doesn't need to lose weight) and that's a big factor for why she is. She also likes the feeling a lot

@mnlouv Well it is a problem, even if she smokes infrequently now. Even smoking a little bit can lead to smoking a lot. I don't mean to be all authoritative here, but a 16 year old should not be smoking.

If her parents don't know, I think you should tell them. Yeah, she'll hate you for a while (or the parents could not tell her how they found out...) but it will benefit her in the long run. Don't mean to be hypocritical as a smoker myself, but I really wish I'd never started in the first place.

@mnlouv dont taddle on her. if someone wants to smoke, theyre going to smoke and theres nothing anyone else can do about it. by telling on her though and getting in her business, you may piss her off, destroy your friendship, destroy her relationship with her family, and cause her to lash out with more destructive behavior. in the same way that you dont like her smoking, im sure theres other things you do that she doesnt like. thats part of being friends, accepting someone for who they are

Let your friend smoke. Don't be a nag. But let her know *once* that it's unhealthy, and that it's not the amount she smokes, but how long a course of time she's smoking.
