I have heard many versions of this song, but none that could beat the one by damh the bard on the album "the crow man"

Also, check out the Fairport Convention version. Interesting variations on the lyrics. Example:  "And then Lord Darnell he took his wife and he sat her on his knee, Saying, ``who do you like the best of us, Matty Groves or me? ''

And then up spoke his own dear wife, never heard to speak so free.

``i'd rather a kiss from dead matty's lips than you and your finery.''

Whatever the words....Matty and Lady Darnell are both dead at the end of the song!
