That weird-looking engine configuration was a way to get four engines with fixed-pitch, nonfeathering propellers no more than one engine apart, so an engine-out situation would not be destabilizing.

You sir, are a Toothless Prehistoric Human Wooly Mammoth whose sole purpose is to be stuffed into squat British cannons and shot into the Indian Ocean.
I made an airfix model in 1973 and entered it into a competition.I came 1st and won a model of a BOAC 747.I never got to finish building that one, nd it only got thrown away 2 months ago as I was moving and had no where to keep it.All the HP 42s ended up scrapped due to accidents during the early years of ww2
There was a sketch on The Benny Hill Show that used some of this footage. The whole part of the program was about a set of characters going on vacation, and Benny was the pilot. Of course, the first "gag" was the passengers seeing the plane warming up...and then the flight footage was shaken up in the edit to make it look like a rough ride.
Great, soft landing... I remember when my brother, who was older and had a bike that could get him places quickly, went off to our local hobby shop to get me this plane (the Airfix kit with the pyramids and all on the box)... he returned and even built it for me!... I called it the "Egyptian Airplane" and loved it... Thanks for posting this...
they were really something...it is actually probably the first civilian aeroplane that captures my boy imagination as much as warplanes have. I have a boy/man daydream of flying past the sphinx and Pyramids in one....like the old Airfix box cover and paintings by Charles J. Thompson.
My uncle was in the army before WW2, I have a picture he took of one of these in Palestine (thats what it was called then). He caught some bug, and they sent him home to die. What a waste, Why do we still send young men to far off places, to conflicts no-one understands?
Comments below re the crash of this plane, GAAGX, over the Gulf of Oman on 1st March 1940 are correct. My grandfather was the Captain - crew and passengers were never found and no cause could be determined. However, it wasnt a RAF flight. The plane was carrying civilians. Very sad for all involved.
They caused no loss of life in CIVILIAN aviation. The RAF lost GAAGX (Hannibal) over the Gulf of Oman on 1st March 1940, with 8 persons on board. If pacificlipper's friend knows more about this incident, there is an invitation to edit on Wikipedia.
!...one comment .u say no passengers were lost...I met a guy here in OZ whose dad flew one and was lost without trace over the arabian/iraq area...he was really cut up about it as his dad was blamed but nothing was ever found so he is carrying this guilt and trying to prove his dads innocence... a real mystery!!...blame the pilot eh??? very very sad
Are any of these aircraft preserved anywhere or were they all scrapped after retirement ?

I never saw an aircraft that could take off and land so smoothly and slowly like this.

That's the typical way how english men construct their airliners. No wonder, why the british empire is history :-)

I used to offer Hemorrhoid surgery in 1932,
Anyone who suffered from weeping piles could have them corterized by me at a very competitive price.
Suffice it to say there were a lot of takers. However Hitler and the subsequent world war greatly damaged my business

what amazes me is that the nose section looks pretty modern (like B52) compared to the shitty motor and wing configuration

Shame there arent any survivors nowadays.
It'd make a great lil island hopper.

only 6,000 odd viewing? If the plane had crashed it would have been 600,000.
