Well spotted.however,I think the song is not about national borders.I actual rather suspect it to be a love song!.
I think you tragically over-play the nationalism. Many ancestors of the Scots were Irish. They both were Celtic, and once shared many cultural beliefs, most now lost.I live on the other side of the world, but had a Scottish great grandfather.Even if I was from Mars I know I would still love this song!.
To nikiarrowsmith: It's a lovely version! It's true that Scots, Irish, English and American and Canadians all sing it. I sing with a group that does Celtic music(USA). Would you mind if I sort of loosely copied your harmony? It is just the sort of thing we do, and one of the guys just said that he and I shoul try this. Tenor/sopr. So of course the octaves will make some difference.
To hogofbullets: (What kind of name is THAT?!) I have heard a similar version done by two men with very hard metalic voices and a very insistent, more rapid beat. At first I hated it, but it grew on me, and now I quite like it! It has a certain wierd comic value, you know?!
@hogofbullets I have it on good (scottish) authority that there's no evidence of this song being scottish. The history of very old songs such as this one are always so jumbled and confusing that it's often impossible to label them with a nationality. Let's call it a celtic song :)
Well done to the vocalists. This song is so beautiful when sung with reverence. In 2005 this song was featured in a film called The Proposition. The actor Tom Budge sang it beautifully. The combination of the song and the scene showed simultaneously the beauty and filth of humanity.
Soft, delicate, beautiful. Your harmony is elegant. Please produce more Video(?). "Will you go lassie go, to pluck wild mountain thyme all around the blooming heather"
Dont get me wrong you have a nice voice. But this is one of those songs that shouldn't be messed with. For all those who know a Scottish version and have iTunes or whatever download 'The Corries - Peggy Gordon'. Listen to it before you Judge my comment.
GREAT voice, good rendition, the movie this song was in recently was The Proposition, i liked the actors version in that more, he has more pain in his voice, yours is just too pretty for some parts but very beautiful, also some lyrics are differant
I like this version better than sinead o'connors and the one from the corrs.I think it sounds clearer in a way..I don't know how to say it,but I think the others sang it in an exaggerated way.
Oops, didnt realize my comment would reach the singer. I was merely communicating to other youtubers that may want to check out sinead's version. Your version is great too. Help!
Sweet and pretty. The reason I really like this and the Proposition version by Tom Budge is that they are produced relatively simple compared to other versions I've heard.
You guys needs to collaborate someone...TinWhistler and Company produce the basic tracks, nikiarrowsmith the vocals. Do it right and you guys would rip this joint.
The movie is called The Proposition, it's sung in a very ominous scene

Interesting harmonizing. I wouldn't have thought it would work as well as it does had I not heard it with mine own ears.
Tis a Scottish song however, not Irish.
