  • Not sure why but it reminds me a little of the weakerthans.

  • wonder how many more people there are in the world doing stuff like this and not telling anyone. guess that's how it should be.

  • This is one of the most genuinely beautiful songs ever

  • just because you like someone's version of something doesn't make it better. taste in music is subjective. a maniac with a bob dylan fixation? that's what makes his sound unique. its not commercial sounding at all and certainly doesn't need to be. both versions are alright but for me, nothing beats the originals.

  • @AUSROTTENY2K bob dylan fixation?

  • @McPfoot i was referring to the guy 3 comments down from me

  • LIFE!

  • I think McCarty's version is better. She brought out the greatness of the song, and has a great voice. Daniel has a great song in here but his version sounds like a maniac with a Bob Dylan fixation. Can't imagine why anyone is hating on her.

  • @hiddenfire65 she's a true vampire

  • this makes me smile so hard that my face rips.....

  • Lo-Fi.. The best of the best!

  • Niiiice!

  • kind of sounds like early ween

  • Electroduck sent me here.

  • i can't stop listening to this song

  • i think this song is awesome

  • I'm living it. Thanks!!!

  • livin livin livin livin life!

  • "It's white people's taste" wow, nobody listen to HappyHooker, she's just an insecure little cunt who's angry that she looks like a fucking man with acne lol PS I'm black so I guess its not white people taste, idiot.

Maybe if you'd learn to be more fucking open minded and stop bringing race into everything, then people wouldn't be annoyed by black people as much :)

  • @AUSROTTENY2K im brown lol yh just ignore people like that

  • Comment removed

  • Honestly, I don't see the attraction. It's white people's taste BUT it kills me that, with all the fans he has, he never could achieve the level, degree of fame that he deserves, that he could have gotten, not because of mental illness, but because our conformist society fails to understand him. That is the hallmark of genius: most people won't get us because they're level of understanding is inferior to those who got it.

  • he's so innocent, like woody guthrie (the car riding song, and how'd ya do song)

  • Daniels voice makes me feel like a kid again

  • This is honestly the best music I have heard in a long time. I'm glad I listened

    Daniel Johnston is a genius

  • agreed it is absolutely fucking perfect i always listen to daniel johnston for awhile and then kinda drift away but every rediscovery is as good as the first!

  • Such a good writer Daniel Johnston, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt amazing song writer even though theyre considered some of the worst singers

  • @GrisGrisOnUrDoorStep None of them are bad, just unconventional. Some say the same thing about Jeff Mangum or Colin Meloy or Jamie Stewart, but I find them all perfect.

  • My favorite part is the violent distortion at the very beginning of the piano intro.

  • Wish I was was there watching him record this.

  • The two higest rated comments cancel each other out so it's an Epic fail. Unlike Daniel Johnston which is EPIC WIN !!! yeah Daniel Johnston you're my hereo. If you can beta it then so can I !

  • @brandoncipelle they may cancel each other out, but one has 11 like and the other has 120 likes. to be honest, id go with the one with 120, so it doesnt really cancel out.

  • this song is epic. i want to have it play at my funeral to bewilder people. lol

  • he may of been odd once but he was smart.

  • 2 ppl suck

  • if he overproduced his songs, he'd just be bob dylan, and we dont need another sold out folk artist tryin to make rock music.

  • @northkato Are you saying that bob dylan didn't write good songs?

  • the ending is epic

  • grew up on this song. its beautiful

  • Anyone talkin' about bad quality of recording or bad perfomance of song is a retarded.

This is Daniel Johnston sound he invented it.His lyrics are so intimate, that's pure art,far from music business

  • the lyrics....the song...just...wow

  • you can't deny that if dan would of been put in a studio and produced and handled right he'd of been elton john big. his songs instead i bet are gonna make some future pop stars famous.

  • love u daniel! my bob dylan <3

  • very good song and the lyrics are perfect.

anyone who doesn't like this, i don't know what to tell you.

  • Ownes. :D

  • Best ever

  • No offense to Kathy Mccarty but Daniel's version is a million times better.

  • @DeadJ0ker27 And no offense to Beck, but same.

  • @DeadJ0ker27

Fuck kathy Mccarty. Since when did mediocrity deserve courtesy.

  • @Akidcalledgrim so true

  • @DeadJ0ker27 she's a vampire

  • i'm argentinian and this men is a genious. i understand all he say un their songs. is like Dylan but extremly. i dont speak and write so good in english, sorry.

    saludos!!

  • He was 20

  • NIICCCEEEE!! ^___^

  • I have to say- Ive listened to Dan Johnstons basement recordings and you can say what you want about is vocal viability but the guy was a firestorm on the piano and I have a real problem with his parents trying to put him in the post office- Im sorry but thats bullshit- this guy was a songwriting fiend

  • what r some of you guy;s fav danny j songs or albums?

  • @oneill8390 the hate song, i live my broken dreams, held the hand, worried shoes, loner and despair comes knockin.... sorry if im a little late but better later than never....

  • @TheEthanhausler

    thanks...its right on time

  • @GEETARS3 You forget Yip/jump music and contunied story.

  • I'm wondering if he re-recorded this... is there a version with better sound

  • @Wowbagger86 nope.

  • @ronrutherford Watched the live videos at least, though time and illness seems to have been tearing at him. Great music anyways.

  • great song, or best song ever?

  • no no! they shouldnt touch the original recordings. the lo-fi-ness is what gives it character and i love it

  • kind of went marx brothers on us at the end. my favorite daniel johnston song though!

  • i think its debatable if bad recording quality makes anything raw. i mean i would love to be able to hear these songs better but there is the imagination factor, like seeing this guy with a 4 track in a basement or something spilling his heart out lol.

a remastering would ruin and save the shit out of his music in different ways.

  • love the ending: lots of piano keys striding along

  • great movie look fowerd to the movie

  • Comment removed

  • This song makes me want to give the world a hug.

  • Why are all of his songs such low recording quality? Can't they be re-mastered or re-recorded? I'm new to this DJ stuff...

  • They are low quality because he recorded them himself in his parents basement or his brother's garage depending on the song. They can't be remastered. They can't be re-recorded by Daniel because he has said himself that he has forgotten all of his old songs. Personally the lo-fi nature of his early work doesn't bother me in fact I think it makes it more genuine. Anyone who doesn't understand this shouldn't listen to Daniel Johnston.

  • Well- still- I sincerely believe someone ought to put him in a studio. I love his lyrics and music- and I'm sure most would- though I'm sure many new listeners preview his stuff and pass it off as amateur before really listening. At least, that's the reaction I've gotten from my friends and associates since purchasing "Hi, How Are You."

  • @dustysheeks Daniel has been in the studio numerous times. He just released his newest album, "Is And Always Was", a few months back.

  • The originals were recorded on a cheap boombox sitting on top of a piano in one take. If you want more hifi versions, try The Late Great Daniel Johnston or Kathy McCarthy's Dead Dogs Eyeball.

  • He took a GARGANTUAN dose of LSD in an unfriendly environment.

    No sh*t he went NUTZ!

LSD is not like beer or pot.

1 dose of LSD = 100X-1000X anything else....plus it's slow. He was given 12 doses of LSD.

And you ALWAYS need someone sober to watch you. (preferably as strong as you.)

He was dosed to be the party nerd or fool.

A true talent, not like anyone in the Butthole Surfers, was literally going insane in front of everyone's eyes, cutting short the life of our Lennon.

  • Fucken acid...SHIT'S AWESOME!

  • this is the beatles for soloists

  • @breekbaard the Beatles in the shape of an eccentric genius.

  • fuck this song.... in my head.... i love it

  • i hope daniel is proud of his accomplishments i heard a cover of this song on the tv show scrubs lol i bet alot of people around him thought he would never make anything of any of his music but not only does he still play to sold out shows , been on mtv 4 times and other tv shows i dunno daniel johnston is awsome

  • i love how he says "mott the hopple"

    amazing song.

  • this song is written very well

  • It's really ashame...but, I still love him

  • ive come to notice somthing all the great artists have some sort of disoder, kurt cobain, anthony green, max bemis, daniel johnston

  • It's amazing that he can make these beautiful songs on a tape recorder and in many cases with toy instruments. I'd like to see almost anyone else achieve this.

  • thats the ONLY thing I can achieve. But God I love Daniel, his music fills me with light. Just like Lennon..

  • LIVIN LIFE

  • Very soulful Daniel.

  • this music makes me happy

  • amazing stuff.. i'm so glad about mccarthy's cover being in a movie, it prob exposed more ppl to find this original and get all excited about DJ.

  • his voice sounds kinda like conor obersts early vocals, but a few years older.

  • His voice????

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooo. Not even close.

  • He's talking about Conor's first songs, which he made when he was around 13. So don't speak if you don't know where he's coming from.

  • Way to come off as rude.

It's a miunderstanding, I bet you misinterpret things too! That doesn't mean you're not supposed to share what you think.

Adn I still don't think they sound simmilar either. It's my opinion and you can't tell me what I'm supposed to think.

    Try being nicer.

  • Yes, I will definitely try to be nicer! You have enlightened me!!! Go fuck yourself. I wasn't telling you what to think. I was simply saying that if you hadn't heard Conor's early songs, then you shouldn't be making comments. If you have heard Conor's early songs, then ok, your statement/opinion is well-founded. So what did you misinterpret? And no I will not to try to be nicer, "it's my opinion and you can't tell me what I'm supposed to think." Suck it.

  • they should remaster his best songs and put them on a cd, and promote the hell out of it, so more ppl might listen

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 subtract the remaster part though, because part of what makes me love his music is the fact that it's so pure and raw

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130

people probly would listen to his music if it were remastered but i think it would take away how raw most of his songs are.

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 i think the graininess adds atmosphere to the songs.

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 why the fuck would you remaster this.....its perfect

  • @52appaZ Agreed, the raw sound makes it what it is.

  • @52appaZ totally. its perfect. get away vampires who want to suck daniel johnston's blood by making "hearable", "nicer", "easy-listening" covers. Hell, some may even will problably say they must be a "bossa-Daniel-Johnston" covers cd!

  • @vlasvlasvlas "i was living in a devil town. didn't know it was a devil town. oooh lord it really brings me down about the devil town! And all my friends were vampires. I didn't know they were vampires! turns out I was a vampire myself in the devil town! ooh lord it really brings me down about the devil town!"

  • @52appaZ ik i like i the way it is but, if it was remasterd it might make him more money, but idk now that i just said that i sound like a trendy qweef lol

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130

I understand what youre saying. Many of us have grown up in the age of finely produced music that has been polished by a high paid producer and his team of cronies. To me it's a bit like the difference between a print and an actual painting by someone like Monet. In person the painting is thick with texture and color variations and even glorious imperfections. On a poster print you lose everything. Over producing music does the same thing. You lose the heart of the artist.

  • @52appaZ Well put

  • @52appaZ Eels - living life. listen to it and then come back and tell me if you still feel the same

  • @Hrko1992 I liked that cover, thanks Hrko1992. But sorry, the appeal to me about Daniel's music is the raw form it is in and the way he delivers the tune. It felt like the eels took the life out of the tune compared to this version. I like slightly out of tune piano, the wavering lyrics, the fact that it sounds like one mic capturing a raw performance. This one here is genius. Gives me chills right now.

  • @52appaZ

Involuntary fuzz can die and if the musics good all goodness will be retained. Jacky. Mc. Danny. Hip. Danny. Mc. Fuck. hippie.

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130

They did. It's called Welcome to my World. It's a greatest hits. It has a great selection of his songs. This song is on it.

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 This and Frusciante is the purest form of music. why fuck with it

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130

yeah and they should have the cast of american idol sing the songs together

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 remastering wouldnt fix them man. i know what ya mean tho, all the distortion/tape fuzz n shit. but that technology doesnt eggzist. you could attempt it, but id be shit.

  • @mykalmint400

optimize the song for vocal clarity and then overdub a proper piano on top, fix the tempo a bit.

    it would sound better.

you should go and rent a studio some time, i have been doing it for 8 years since high school. it really helps when you grab FL studio. right now i use guitar pro 6, sound forge (wave hammer would come handy in this one song), fl studio, ableton live 8.1, virtual dj (some old version i think), cakewalk, synthfont, plus a ton of vsti! just off the top of my head.

  • @mazdaplz are you joking!?

  • @thesexbombsmusic

no, you said it couldn't be done. but that was just ignorance

  • @thesexbombsmusic

or rather mykalmint400 said so, i thought you were the one who commented because i was responding to someone else to begin with, make sure you read that next time

  • i think that would be a bad idea. first off his songs are perfect the way they are and the way the sound. sadly in todays world full of our 3o3 and our black eyed peas i just dont think people would take kindly to this before really getting to really listen to the meaning.

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 they are on cd....

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130

they have been reissued and the casstettesare still available in their original formtat at Stress Records

  • @pukeonmyshoe2130 Isn't that pretty much what 'Discovered Covered' was?

  • Daniel is such a great songwriter and artist. What I like best about him is that he's not afraid to make music and share it with others no matter what his family said about his "silly" dreams.

  • I think it's really great to see such ignorance against Johnston's long list of tour dates in 2009. Please, go back to listening to ICP. Daniel Johnston and the rest of the music community would prefer that.

  • Comment removed

  • ICP is child stuff. Daniel Johnston is an artist.

  • I agree. I can tell he puts a lot of his emotions in his music, I just don't really like it, that's all.

I made the comment about ICP because of an earlier comment on this page.

  • seriously, gotta feel blessed that we even get to hear this music that he made

  • Saw him play this live last night - awesome!

  • Some of his teeth also got knocked out in a scuffle with police when he got arrested trying to baptize people in a river.

  • this is beautiful- one of his greatest songs- god bless him, he's so talented! the guy's a true artist :)

  • a day in the life outro?? wow fucking genius! bit of all the greats in him beatles, dylan, young, manson, morrison, amazing person dan is!

  • I love this song ! ive just uploaded a cover of it, i hope i done it justice have a listen please ! x

  • daniel johnston is the number 9!

  • Oh my god wot a fucking outro!

  • does anyone else feel really sorry 4 him?

  • No, why?

  • DJ is the best ever! I love the lyrics of his songs, they make me so happy and sad and make me feel like someone knows what I am feeling.

  • wow...this is really good.

  • kinda sounds like bob dylan

  • really nice

  • NICE!!

  • Genius. Simple.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh dear.

  • Your explanation as to why you like it definitely had nothing to do with you being an eels fan.

  • THEY SANG THIS SONG!!!!!!!!

CUZ THEY LIKED IT SO MUCH!!!!!!

ITS EVEN IN THE RELATED VIDS BAR TO THE RIGHT!!!!!!

thats what im trying to get throught to you.

and thats how i found out about daniel johnston.

also DONT think for a second that i hate daniels music.

  • this is the same recording that is on the album....he recorded it in his basebment with a tape recorder. (adds a little "realness" you most likely know nothing about...eels fan.)

  • so ur hating me cuz i want him to record him singin again but in better quality?

  • I think you are missing the point.

  • no i get what u r all sayin

mabye its just his style of doin things

but dont spam me with hate mail cuz i want it in better quality

  • Look Daniel Johnston worshiped the Beatles and would't have mind being recorded expensive equipment.

  • I love both versions. Eels did a great job with it, I give them credit for seeing another way to do this song (much more refined). D Johnston gets even more credit (for the obvious reason) he created it. He's an incredible talent.

  • Eels version is just mundane. It does not capture this.

  • @Lentil70 i agree- i love the Eels, but i don't like their version much

  • that's how it was originally recorded you dullard.

  • It's the best it gets. Daniel used a tape recorder to record his early stuff. The song is all there even though it's poorly recorded.

  • its just one of those songs that you will listen to every now and then

i doubt i will forget it

(i wish i could forget Nelly!)

  • There's gonna be a public viewing of The Devil and Daniel Johnston in my town, and apparently he's going to be introducing it and such. Should be amazing.

  • If you like this; track down Kathy McCathys version; its totally on par. PS AustinJohnson's a dumbcunt. Sure Daniel Johnston was a good songwriter but Bob fucking Dylan inspired a fucking generation. Learn to contextualize and compare.

  • I am addicted to this song.

  • Daniel Johnson should be a bigger legend then Bob Dylan! Bob Dylan has nothing over Daniel Johnston in my view.

Dylan does not have the great backround story that Johnson has.

  • One of the most idiotic statements ive ever heard.

Johnston's recordings can be good, but some of them are... random jibberish, like Conor Oberst.

Bob Dylan, on the other hand, is a great poet, on the level of Cohen.

Judge the music, not the story behind it. When you can appreciate the music for itself, the backstory might help you appreciate it more. However, don't mix up your priorities.

    /essay

  • So true, fadeaway2112. Well Said.

  • Your WRONG in my view Dylan Johnson is better then Bob Dylan. Its not a fact Bob Dylan is better. The majority can be wrong unless your a true "tool". You did not understand anything I said. The story is a really big part of the music. I do appreciate the music so, im already at the point were I appreciate both. My priorities are not wrong, its your ego that makes you think your musical tastes are better then everyone elses.

  • Not at all. I support Ron Paul. Why? Certainly not because he was accepted by the majority.

I don't have an ego. I can just tell you that Johnston's songs are beautiful when simplistic, but not so much when complex. Bob Dylan was a master of the complex and simple song. Therefore, I think it's a fact he's better.

  • dear god man, it's "you're" not "your."

you're not allowed to have anymore opinions until you learn your grammar.

  • lowblow

  • In my last comment I made a typing error. I ment Daniel Johnston not Dylan Johnston.

  • Personally i like Bob Dylan better. but look at aniel Johnston.. he's recording all of that on his own without any major label backing him and without a proper studio. so i just gotta give him the propers for that.

  • well in this case its a combo deal. Not only was he a great musician, he is a great artist. If you listen to the lyrics and the structure rather than the "exact Time signature", then you begin to understand. Its sloppy , but its more beautiful and pure than any corporate machine artist Ive ever heard. I also see his drawings go for 500 plus dollars on ebay so apparantley alot of people like his art as well

  • Obviously you didn't look into Bob Dylan's background story. You shouldn't judge music this way, it's like comparing apples to oranges. They're both great in their own little way. Please don't compare.

  • like no other. awesome!
