I only learned recently that I had a cousin on my dads side who ended up being a tail gunner in the Dambusters. One sortie his plane didnt return, and his wartime photos of him sitting in the tail position with chunks of aircraft missing around him are kept in the family with great pride.
I have to admit when I first watched this I assumed that this was a memorial flight on one of the target dams. I thought, geezh, the West sure is pretty tight that the locals allowed the English to memorialize the attack. I'd kinda be like the US flying a B-29 on the 60th ann of Hiroshima. Then I looked it up Derwent Reservoir .... Very tastefully done.
One thing that makes it so poignant seeing these amazing old warbirds is that they will outlive the men who rode them to war. We are losing our WWII vets rapidly, and soon these planes will be the only direct link to those amazing men who did amazing things in these extraordinary aircraft.
Glad I found this. A friend told me that I'm in the video!
I would also like to say thank you to the brave pilots & crews for defending our country during WWII. Without the RAF (RCAF, RAAF etc,) the war would probably have ended with the Allies loosing.
I know where this person filmed this theres a house on a hill on the top of the dam and i wished i lived there lol i go cycling here in the summer a lot its a cool place
just had a weeks holiday in the Peak district & stood on that dam wishing i could see a lancaster fly over, thank you and thanks for keeping the memory alve
@Marauder0090 It will NEVER be forgotten Marauder, it's up to us to pass on to our children & grandkids what these brave men did & how 56 of them gave their lives that night. It may interest you to know I live in the same town as the New Zealander Mr. Les Munro, the one & only Dambuster pilot still alive today. I think Les is now 92 & as New Zealanders, we are very, very proud to still have him in our midst. I hope he is with us for many more years to come. Cheers, we will not forget them.
i went to a dam busters day in chesterfield and i met richard todd, the wife of ken brown who piloted 'F' for freddy. and a few crew members of 617sqd from that time. it was quite emotional meeting real heroe, it was a shame that the 53 crew members that died on the raid couldn't be there...we will never forget.
OptimaxX hello, are you the guy who was at the Dams on the tthe last remembrance day, playing the Last Post

Great to be there, if only for the sound of those wonderful engines. Pity about that helicopter, though.

I can say after sitting ( and taxying) in the RCAF Mk.X Lancaster you actually feel like your defending an Empire with an Aircraft like that.
the bravery of the RAF crews on the night of the Dams raid takes its rightful place in the long and storied annals of UK history.
it must NOT be forgotten.
