The Allied commanders, with the blessing of Truman, had intentionally decided to let the Soviets be the first in Berlin. "Let the Soviets do the 'spate work' and mangle their way into heavily defended Berlin," Ike had Suggested to Truman. It may sound cynical, but it was a smart move to conserve lives. Why risk more lives storming into a hornet's nest when the Soviets are prepared to do it? It was practical reality in April 1945.

This is the most interesting battle for me, it was entirely a revenge plot. Anyways anyone interested in this battle should read "The fall of Berlin 1945" by Antony Beevor

We Americans were glad to allow the Soviets the privilege of capturing Berlin for three primary reasons. One, we had already agreed about the lines of demarcation that follow the Surrender of the Third Reich. Two, the Soviet homeland had been devastated by the Nazi invasion and they deserved to dish out the revenge on Berlin. Third, The USA didn't have the emotional need to capture the German capital and USA would gladly avoid the needlesscasualties.

I think if you have read on the topic you would know, that at the time it was Stalin's word that mattered and both, Roosevelt and Churchill had no choice but to obey. Read Montgomery's book on Stalin.

Isn't it time to stop trying to paint the Germans as the bad guys??? Read everything you can get your hands on about pre-ww2 Europe. Russia manipulated the Germans into invading Poland. Stalin was the main manipulator of WW2.

i don't know if you have read any history books but it was actually germany that invaded the ussr, not the other way round. then they proceeded to murder civilians, burn villages and inflict untold suffering to millions of people. it was a war of annihilation. they meant to wipe entire soviet cities out of existence, 'reduce' the population ad turn the rest into slaves. so yeah, they got a taste of their own medicine.

The British and american cowards bombed german civilians during the entire war. When the japenese attacked Pearl Harbour ( military base ) 1,700 civilians got caught up in the crossfire. Thats the amount of civilians the USA lost during the entire war. The americans killed 145,100 japenese civilians and a couple of hundred thousend German civilians. The Nazis killed plenty of civilians when they invaded Poland and Russia; they weren't American civilians but they were still civilians.

As for Iraq and Afghanistan, I'm sure there were civilian casualties during fighting but it was not intentional. We never gassed them.

The Germans at the battle of Berlin were a mixed bag. Some were highly trained and battle hardened veterans of various fronts of WWII to old men and young boys. The RKKA was made up for the most part of seasoned veterans of years of war. In accord with Soviet doctrine the Red Army relied on the huge amount of firepower of their tanks and artillery not to mention massive numbers of infantry to finally crush the German defenses in eastern Germany. The Germans fought well but they could not win.

Well they had good reason to be a bit pissed, after all they just lost 29 million people.And they had very good reason to be worried since there was a certain school of thought among American military planners that since they had the Bomb, they should use it against Russia and get rid of this Communist problem. As for the commentary,Berlin`s fate was discussed and agreed at Yalta. I think "terror" is a bit strong here, after all they were just through the Nazis occupation.
