The only thing that scares me is the possibly miles of water under that prop. I rather die a quick violent death then a slow, freezing, darkening, and crushing one.
There were buleyes installed in the ship's hull. We had to open and enter an empty tank below the steering gear room to get there. These bulleyes were additionally secured with metal plates screwed to the hull.
I have the same problem. I am SO fucking scared of propellers! I think my worst possible fear, apart from drowning, is getting sucked through one of these..but I guess that would kinda incorporate drowning, so...nooo goood... :S
Ah holy hell, that is too fast and gigantic! it must be propellerphobia! Started when we were kids looking at the propeller room at the Queen Mary. Maybe we were all on the Titanic in a past life?
I have phobia of those damn things. Especially the big ones of cruise ships or other ships of that size. Can't even take a look at the water in the back of a cruise ship: am too scared I'd see the propellers.
@sleepingpriestess23 Same i was so fucking scared of ship/boat propellers seeing them in the water spinning! scarry stuff lol! when i was younger lol!
just think the Navy Seals go under aircraft carriers that make these freight ships look like tiny speedboats how they have the balls to get near some of those props i will never know
one time i was swimming and my uncle who owns a lobster boat (my whole family is involved in lobster fishing including me) came up to me and threw the boat into reverse and it sucked me under and when i came back up after he put the boat in nutral and the blades stopped spining i was 6 inches away from the boat another 3 or 4 feet and i would have been a gonner
This video reminds me of the movie SPEED 2:Cruise Control (1997)-Where the guy goes under the Cruise Ship "Seabourn Legend" to try and foul the propeller. Great movie :)
I guess it's the easiest way too see if the propeller is damaged or bent. Sending a diver down in a harbour is cumbersome. And going into drydock is not something ships do frequently for every minor fault.
There is a watertight window under the hull in the engine room (likely in the steering engine room) that's used to check the health of the propeller otherwise impossible from over water
the company installed some portholes above the prop so they could monitor the cavitation. It can cause damage to propellers so they want to see what part of the prop causes the most cavitation to try and modify the blades
if you fell in forward of the props you probably wouldnt stand much chance because the blades pull in water with a powerful current.
as the r.m.s. brittanic sank in ww1 the starboard proppelor was half in half out of the water and that was strong enough to pull in and dice a lifeboat and its. occupants.
i seen them props whilst scampering about on my jet ski - the ship was unladen- @ 3:00 that looks to be moving 100, 000,000 gallons a minute- the camera is tight to not get sucked into it
I don't know what they call this phobia, but I swear whenever I get close to HUGE ships and especially huge ship's propellers, I get really freaked out. This video freaked me the hell out.
skeetingtheheat youve probly got the wrong impression of ships, you might see them (im not saying you do) as rolling about on the ocean sea sick sinking drowning things. but really there quite amazing :D
i can sympathise, i occasionally have awful dreams in which i'm sucked into a massive ship's propellors. It's the propellor and the fear of being sucked into it that bugs me, not the massive ship itself, personally i love big ocean liners and cruise ships etc.
@SkeetInTheHeat You're not kidding. Since being five years old, the thought of even swimming next to an ocean liner scares the ever-loving shit out of me.
@SkeetInTheHeat it is probably NOT a phobia so much as being afraid in the face of something larger than you are when you would be in water, a medium we re helpless in as humans. Not to mention you would surely be injured even mangled in it.
@SkeetInTheHeat I used to be the same way with big rigs, but then I got a job working around them lol. I actually used to transport boats and yachts and shit. But it wasnt the boats that would scare me it was walking around the front of a big rig while it was running haha
@SkeetInTheHeat I feel like this too, i dunno what it is, but when i am close to a outboard engine i dont get freaked out when i see its propeller. But even when i see a large ass propeller underwater i freak out like "woooah" for some reason.
@SkeetInTheHeat im with yuh!! i will stand on a bridge and look down on them all day long.. but walking up to one? or getting anywhere NEAR the ramp to climb on board? pff.. this 30 year old man is running the other direction yelling MOMMY!!!! lmao
That prop isn't cavitating. If you look closely, there is a bubble generator ahead of the prop and that is what is creating the trails you see. If the prop were cavitating, you would see that spiral trail of air bubbles break up because cavitation would distrub the flow across the blades.
hello all! I just want to make a correction about the RPM after my calculation and analysis for the first day it was 116 RPM and not really 96 RPM with 4 blades propeller and i don't hear any comperss cavitation on this audio.thank you
the spiral is cavitation which is caused because the pressure in the blades of the prop is decreased and it reaches the vapor pressure of the water (pressure at which the water becomes gas-vapor)
No one is swimming in that water. You are looking through a port hole cut into the bottom of the ship directly over the prop to inspect it. The prop is roughly 30' tall, easily one of the larger props props out there. There are bigger, but not by much. The hole is cut into the ship to inspect it for cavitation issues. Which, by the looks of the video, seem to be a serious problem....
he is not scuba diving, if he was he would have been sucked into the propeller. Besides on seconds :11 to :12 you can see the outline of a window on the bottom left hand corner of the video.
Dude was that filmed by a person? How could you even get that close without becoming 1,000,000 pieces

I've read about cavitation but never actually seen it happening. Pretty cool idea to put a view window there.

Is is bad to have thoes cool looking ripples (cavitation) and all thoes bubbles at the back of the ship?

cavitation is bad for the propeller-it causes damage to the blade (wikipedia has a good explaination)

Which, by the looks of the video, seem to be a serious problem....

is there a window in bottom of this ship ?
Ollie930 3 years ago
no hes scuba diving there.
nafango22 3 years ago
he is not scuba diving, if he was he would have been sucked into the propeller. Besides on seconds :11 to :12 you can see the outline of a window on the bottom left hand corner of the video.
